They just keep rolling in.  KG has the Cardinals taking Matthew Purke as well with a (somewhat warranted) backhand at their spending habits

This is one of the more fascinating picks in the second half of the round. Jeff Lunhow and his staff play it as close to the vest as any front office in the game. Some have them looking at high school bats, some have them taking classic college performers like Tim Wheeler, and if Kyle Gibson drops this far, he’ll have to be considered. That’s all the stuff that makes sense, but the crazy whispers involve them acting like the big-market team they technically are and making a splash with a signability pick. Matt Purke can’t drop forever… or can he?
Pick: Matt Purke, LHP, Klein HS (TX)

First rule of the Purke fanclub is, you dont talk about the Purke fanclub. My hopes have officially gotten up…please dont let me down

The pickle only has so many draft day heartache’s left him his dill shaped heart:)

Yea, Klaw linked the Cards to Purke as well.

It’s the hottest rumor out there right now.

out of curiosity – has anyone ever evaluated these mock drafts after the fact? Are any of the pundits correct more frequently than they are wrong?

Callis has been about as good as you good hope for the past few years, especially in the top half of the first round. Of course, Callis’ final mock the last few years came out about the same time as this year’s, although in past years the draft started at noon rather than 6 Eastern time. It will be interesting to see if the extra 6 hours will allow for more movement.

If we get Purke I will be ecstatic but I’m not getting my hopes up. I think there’s a 50% chance he makes it to 19, a 40% chance we’ll take him there, and only a 70% chance we’ll sign him if we take him. So that’s a 14% chance we land him. That being said, I have thought previously that, because we don’t have a supplemental pick this year, we could spend more on the top pick. Kozma/Mortenson got just over $2 million in ’07, while Wallace/Lynn got around $2.7 million last year.
