I was just researching Porcello and Purke on here. Kind of prompted by Purke's success this year. Reardon is still projected as the number 1 pick next year. I don't see how Purkes situation would be any different next year than it was before. As a draft eligible sophomore he is still able to ask for the moon and stay in school if he doesn't get it. He wanted what Porcello got a Major League contract, spot on the 40 man roster and 7.5 mil. The Rangers negotited it down to 6mil but the Commissoner wouldn't approve it because MLB was essentially paying for the Rangers as they were nearing bankruptcy. Same leverage the only difference I see is that teams now see he can be an effective college pitcher and thus there is less risk of him being a complete bust.

Really digging through those archives there, Andrew!

IF eligible, Purke will probably be the #1 pick unless he wants too much $$. Not sure how much is too much though if some team thinks he can be Strasbourg light with a quick jump to the majors.

I think the possibility of Purke will resurface next draft. He's a draft eligible sophmore. His freshman year he's 14-0 with a low 3 era. He's come up real big beating Texas and then FSU in the first game of the CWS.

The only thing that worries me about Purke is that 92 mph number. Not because 92 mph is bad but because how many times have the Cards been burned by the reporting of a kids velocity being XX-XXX number with the real ceiling being XX?

Purke, Scheppers, Crow. . .those are the high-upside picks if the Cards want to truly make a splash. I'd also be happy C. James, S. Miller, G. Green, M. Davidson or Borchering. But the Cards simply CANNOT go cheap again and take a considerably lower-ceiling guy just because he'd take slot. We need franchise players, not organizational filler.

Listen to the smart robut! We need some upside this year, so if it's Chad Jenkins, then yes, I will be upset.

If the Cardinals take a safe pick, there will be gnashing of teeth. This club doesn't need safe picks right now, they need upside and potential. It doesn't HAVE to be Purke but it can't be another easy sign low upside guy -- even I'll rail at that.

Now if the Cards don't take Purke, there will be great mashing of teeth in Cardinal Land.
