Cards take Brooks Conley in 7th, Jason Stidham 8th
Posted by erik in 2009 MLB Draft, tags: Brooks Conley, Jason StidhamNow the Cardinals are going the college-performer route. First they go with Brooks Conley, an OF out of the U. of Washington. Seems like a one-dimensional slugger to me, but for the 7th round, that’s not bad. Conley hit .303/.401/.645 for Washington, and the Huskie’s home ballpark very much favors pitchers. I have his Gross Production Average (a variant of OPS, scaled to batting average) at a .365, adjusting for strength of schedule and park. So he has some pretty nice power.
Stidham is a middle infielder and like Conley put up some pretty prodigous numbers. He hit .363/.465/.650, good for a adjusted GPA of .363. Can’t find anything really on him, scouting-wise. He’s a left-handed hitter, and for a middle infielder the numbers are pretty outstanding.

The lefthanded-hitting Stidham fills a need at shortstop this spring for the Seminoles after playing third base as a freshman and second a year ago. His limited range makes him more suited for second or third in pro ball, but he is steady if unspectacular no matter which infield position he plays. Stidham’s bat is his best tool; he routinely puts the ball in play while showing flashes of raw power. Though he projects as just a sixth- to 10th-round prospect for this year’s draft, Stidham coule be the first FSU players selected—unless the more-talented D’Vontrey Richardson can shake off the rust from two years away from the game and have a breakout season.
On Washington’s school site they have that Conley redshirted his Sophomore year due to surgery on his left, non-throwing, shoulder. Had 19 HRs his RS-Soph and Jr years and if you say it is a pitchers park and plays in the Pac-10 that is some pop. A pretty big kid too at 6-4 210.
For those googling at home, Conley appears to go by “Kyle” and not Brooks.
