Time wasting, away!

Marky Ballgame?

I’m being punished for my use of hockey in a baseball blog.  With Memphis back on the scene tonight, we had 5 games being contested in the system.

Memphis 3, Nashville 11

  • In June, Jarrett Hoffpauir is hitting .421 with a .737 slugging percentage. He went 2-for-4 today with a double.
  • Mark Shorey was 1-for-3 with a double and run scored.
  • Donovan Solano went 2-for-4 with a RBI. Unfortunately, he also had an error.
  • Adam Ottavino hasn’t won a game. I guess that fact had passed me by before, but after tonight he has fallen to 0-8. He only went 4.2 innings, walking 5 and striking out 4. He yielded 4 runs, 3 of them earned on 5 hits.
  • Matthew Scherer tacked on 2 more runs in his 1.1 innings, but struck out 3 of his 4 outs.
  • Kat Maekawa seems to have lost whatever effectiveness he had a month ago. He gave up 5 ERs in only 0.2 innings. He walked 2 and gave up 5 hits.
  • Ian Ostlund’s only blemish came on a hit in his 1.1 innings.

Springfield 2, Tulsa 1 (Game 1)

  • Tyler Henley and Tony Cruz both went 2-for-3.
  • The offensive hero of the game was Mark Hamilton. His 2 RBI single was the only scoring for the Cardinals.
  • Trey Hearne pitched 5 innings of 1 run ball for the win. He struck out 5, walked 3 and only gave up 2 hits.
  • Tyler Norrick and Francisco Samuel picked up a hold and a save with both of their 2 strikeout innings. Norrick had a walk.

Springfield 4, Tulsa 1 (Game 2)

  • Another game with Daryl Jones sitting and only appearing late off the bench. I hope it was just a resting of a prized prospect in the 2nd half of a double header. They better not be holding him out for a potential trade because I will BURN THIS MOTHER TO THE GROUND!
  • Daniel Descalso continues his march into many a FR readers heart by going 2-for-4 with two doubles. I hope he called a cab. ZING!
  • My favorite Dutch royal citizen and yours, Curt Smith went Big Fly along with a walk.
  • Pete Kozma apparently watched MLB Network on Tuesday and realized what ‘First Round Draft choice’ actually meant. Kozma hit two doubles of his own, continuing his absurd XBH binge of the last two days. Pete also stole a base.
  • Brandon Dickson pitched 5.2 innings in the double-header shortened game. He held Tulsa to only 3 hits and 2 walks. They scored a run and he struck out 4.
  • Eduardo Sanchez picked up his first Texas League save with 2 innings of shutout relief.

Palm Beach 3, The Brevard County Courthouse Beer League Softball Team 6

  • Colt Sedbrook was 1-for-3 with a double, 2 walks and a RBI.
  • Tommy Pham phought oph his season long slumping to go 2-phor-phour. Pham pilphered a base, as well.
  • Jose Garcia continued the systems offensive SS play with a 2-for-2 of his own, smacking 2 doubles with 2 RBIs. He also had 2 errors. How Kozmanian of him!
  • Scott Gorgen only allowed 1 unearned run in his 6 innings. He struck out 6 and gave up 7 hits.
  • Thomas Eager picked up a hold and the lose in his 1.1 innings. Eager gave up 2 ERs on 1 hit and 1 walk. He struck out 2.
  • Adam Reifer took the blown save by pushing across Eager’s runs.
  • Chrysanthemum Linares faced only 1 batter while Jason Buursma made a mess of things in the 9th, giving up 3 hits and 3 runs (2 ER).

Quad Cities 3, Cedar Rapids 2

  • Alex Castellanos (triple), Frederick Parejo (double) and Travis Mitchell (triple) all went 1-for-4. Parejo had an RBI.
  • Paul Cruz was 1-for-3 with a RBI in the 8th to tie the game at 2.
  • Niko Vasquez continues to show signs of life, almost earning himself more mythical tales. Going 1-for-3, Vasquez hit a walk-off sacrifice fly in the 10th inning, following Mitchell’s triple. Interestingly enough, with 1 out and a runner at 3rd, Cedar Rapids elected not to load the bases and hope for the double play or atleast a force at any base. And, the OF’er caught the flyball by Vasquez, which makes me wonder just how deep it was and how fast Mitchell was booking it down the line.
  • The Mayor Gary Daley was strong in his 6 innings, holding the opposition to just 3 hits and 3 walks. He gave up an earned run and struckout 5.
  • Ramon Delgado gave up the other run of the game in his 2 innings of work.
  • David Carpenter took the win with a walk the only mark on his 2 innings.

With Colby Rasmus breaking necks and writing checks (wait, what?) at the Major League level, who is the next Faberge egg likely to be an impact player for the Cardinals and when do you see it happening? Greene and Ryan have both been good, but I don’t see either being a league leader for years to come. If I had to put a guess on the next guy, I’d lay some money down on Mitchell Boggs figuring out his secondary stuff and becoming a strikeout machine in the Cardinals rotation.

Does that clinch the first-half championship for the S-Cards or is that not decided until their all-star break?

And the Cardinals should call out the Kraken if Memphis is gonna leave Shorey to do all the heavy lifting in their OF.

  2. Jeff Roman says:

Jones I believe is coming off injury, so maybe they didn’t want to make him play both halves of the double-header?

  3. t7rick says:

“I said you better not, you better not.”

  4. Jeff Roman says:

Looks like Tyler Bighames, SS, 31st, will sign and get a 10th round bonus.

    http://cardinalsbestnews.blogspot.com/2009/06/tyler-bighames-mom-works-magic-to-get.html

Estero shortstop Tyler Bighames was selected early in the draft’s third and last day of picks. Bighames went in the 31st round (939th overall) to the St. Louis Cardinals. Bighames was committed to play at the University of Oregon, but his family told NBC2 shortly after he was drafted that he expects to sign with the Cardinals and forgo college. If so, he will report to Cardinals camp in Jupiter early next week to begin his pro career.

here’s a scouting report from perfect game, who gives him a perfect 10/10 rating.

Tyler Bighames is a 2009 SS with a 6’2”, 198 lb. frame from Estero, FL who attends Estero. Tyler has a strong athletic build, good balance and actions in infield, good arm strength, comes in on ball well. Good balance in swing, very good strength, attacks ball, very good bat speed, impressive BP, good games swings, ball jumps off bat, 95 off bat in games, very interesting player both in the field and at the plate.

      sounds interesting to me.

  5. Bob says:

Another Tyler in the system? Guess they had to replace Herron. ;)

Next Big Thing? It sure looks like Descalso–especially given his excellent DEfensive performance this year.

How much longer do you think go before sending Adam Ottavino to the bullpen? Man, this is getting to be quite a string of failed first round pitching prospects. Here are the pitchers the Cards have selected since 1999 in the first round.

    Chance Caple (1999)
    Blake Williams (2000)
    Justin Pope (2001)
    Chris Lambert (2004)
    Adam Ottavino (2006)

0 for 5 with first round pitchers, ouch!!! You have to go back to Braden Looper (1996) to find a pitcher selected in the first round by the Cards that succeeded, and Looper was a reliever when drafted. We desperately need to turn around the trend with Shelby Miller.

  7. Hugo says:

I like where erik is going with that comment too. People have been complaining about the “draft geeks” and others that follow the minors, basically saying that all we do is trump up guys that fail. If Miller fails in 2-3 years they will laugh at us because “you said he would be a star and look at him now”. We need to temper expectations more while still getting excited. I know that Miller may crap out and become no more than a Brad Thompson or worse, or he could also become a lights out Ace. Drafts are gambles, I am excited by the ceiling he has and if he never reaches that ceiling but hits somewhere close I will still be happy and if he craps out I just need to remember that most pitchers fail.

  8. ArRedbird says:

Right — about the Round 1 draftees
But all of those listed by jray spent some time pitching in college.

Let’s sign 18-y-o Miller first, then we’ll see how he does as a pro.
If he’s starting at AA when he’s 20 / 21, then Cards may have picked a winner.

  9. JMG says:

I am going to go on a limb regarding HL’s question…I think ClayMort will be the guy to fill the rotation and will rise to the challenge.

  10. PJ says:

Scott Gorgen—I loved the pick and now he is showing me why. When will he get bumped to AA?

  11. ozziehof says:

Just saw this quote from Quicksilver Jr’s coach in LA (from an article about Virgil Hill getting drafted):

“He runs a 6.1 60-yard dash, which is world-class sprinter speed”

    Awesome.

6.1 is unreal. i don’t think i have ever seen a prospect clocked that low. dude has good pop too. i can’t wait to see how he does.

  12. gobirds says:

So it appears Kozma’s bat is coming around, for now at least. Now, how is his defense looking?

I was wondering where Double D’s went… glad to have you back buddy.

Hopefully SHelby Miller does break the mold of our first round pitching selections. I got high hopes for the kid. I like the fact that he already has a big league mentality, now let’s see if that can translate to the field and put to rest all the Porcello jibba jabba.

  13. jjray says:

@erik 0/5 = zero. Should have come up with 1 major leaguer out of that group … but a small sample size.

  14. BigJawnMize says:

Isn’t it good to see Colby heat up. It is kinda par for the course for him though–I wish he wouldn’t always wait until June to start playing.

I still have faith that Kozma is going to figure it out. I think he is going to end up being a really good player regardless of the draft drama. AA really needs to be his stop though–The Cards shouldn’t move him up until his all facets of his game really start to gel.

Back to HL though–I think we see Wallace up before the end of the year. At least at the MLB level he will get pitched to. Next years line-up with Ludwick, Pujols, Rasmus, and Wallace has potential. But the guy I have the highest hopes for is Jones…he has that feal that he would fit into a throwback 80s-early 90′s Cardinals outfield. Hopefully Daryl refers to himself in the third person for comedic effect…

  15. JC says:

Very happy seeing Rasmus playing well…I was also much happier than most when they kept him in the minors last year and didn’t bring him up (I felt another good year would do him well on the farm). Also as a sidenote: I have quite a man crush on the dude (yes you can make fun of me all you want :) ).

To the question of who will be the next impact player to come up….I have a few names:

Wallace – Either later this year or to start the ’10 season he will be our starting 3B. He will get it together in AAA and start mashing…it is quite an adjustment to go up the ladder so quickly as the pitching in AA and AAA is far superior than the lower minors.

Boggs/Mortensen – I am fans of both these guys. I think they both have middle of the rotation potential. I think maybe Boggs is closer but don’t count out Mort.

Todd – As the season goes along you need to bring up that fresh face for your bullpen. I think Todd could be that guy. I am not as high on him as some but you can’t ignore the stats and how fast he rose in the system. If injury happens or we trade someone in the pen I see Todd getting the call and turning into a guy that throws key innings in the 9th.

  16. “Brevard County Courthous beer league softball team” – LOL. My wife is from Brevard County. She wants to move back there someday. I’m a lawyer. I might actually be on that team someday. And I’ll be conflicted as to whether I should try to beat the Palm Beach Cardinals or adequately represent the local bar;)

  17. Liam says:

If you flip a coin five times and get heads each time, that doesn’t mean tails don’t exist.

    Or something.

  18. arch support says:

    Kozmanian. Love it.

My guess on the picture: Jim Edmonds. I know, I know, but come on! Lefty, number 15, Cards uni…brings back memories.

  19. tom s. says:

Liam – doesn’t it mean that your college nickel is broken and you should get a high school nickel?

  20. Redbird says:

    Tyler Henry is the picture…

  21. Redbird says:

Sorry… Tyler Henley. I’m going to go on record as saying this guy is major league material. Possibly better than Jay, Shorey, Mather, Robinson etc. I like this guys potential.

  22. Redbird says:

    15 is Mark Hamilton

  23. BigJawnMize says:

So I was reading the PD and there was a comment on off bat velocity. I started to wonder if this is something that teams are starting to scout, we are starting to get good infomation on what major leaguers do–it could be an indication of power potential. Of course bat material makes a difference, but just a thought…

  24. BigJawnMize says:

    Az-

I meant at an amatuer level…It seems like something you could get a good read on and see if it is relative at some of the showcase type events.

  25. jjray says:

Yeah, I was trying to come up with a witty Shanonism on “the law of averages” but whiffed.

  26. tom s. says:

the more that the club reaches to sign bighames and fellows like him, the more credibility they gain. there’s a lot to like about this draft.

i do wish that we had more potential starting pitchers than relievers, but all in all i like this draft a lot.

  27. Grant says:

    From today’s BA chat:

Kyle (Illinois): What was your take on the Cardinals draft?

Jim Callis: Loved the Shelby Miller pick at No. 19, as stated. Not sure I buy Southern California’s Robert Stock (second round) as a catcher, but he may be an interesting pitcher if he’s willing to do that. Relievers Joe Kelly (third) and Scott Bittle (fourth) could get to St. Louis quick. Rest of the draft looks solid, but the definite highlight was stealing Miller at No. 19. That, and former BA staffer Matt Blood getting four draftees in his first year as a Cardinals area scout.

  28. Jeremy Dahlstrom says:

Looks like T. Herron is a Pirate now.

    http://www.buildingthebucs.com/2009/06/pirates-sign-rhp-tyler-herron.html

The Pirates have signed RHP Tyler Herron as a minor league free agent and assigned him to AA Altoona. Herron was released from the Cardinals organization on June 3rd. He was the Cardinals supplemental 1st Round Pick in 2005 (the “sandwich” round), selected 46th overall (as compensation for the Card’s loss of C Mike Matheny). He signed for $675,000.

  29. chevyz71 says:

After reviewing the draft I think they got a steal when Adam Heisler slipped to th45th rd. We played South Alabama this year and could not get him out. His stats were great in the sunbelt hir .390 and can run 6.5 in 60. Cards have low balled him with offer still has sr. year. Cards should throw some more money his way and sign him to play CF. Same school as P.J.Walters and David Frieese well coached.
