So was there a draft this week or something? The draft means a lot around Future Redbirds for two reasons. 1) It’s easily our highest traffic day with 4 times as many hits as we see on an average day. 2) It means we’re getting closer to Johnson City (23rd) and Batavia (19th) starting up. If we have some long DFRs before those two clubs, the new (often not as well known) names and two extra games each night can be taxing. As always, we’ll continue to strive for the best coverage in Daily Farm Reports of the Cardinals minor league system as myself, Jeff and Hardcore Leg…. HL?
Hey, HL? Dang it. Jeff, did you leave the blog door open again? The Penguins were playing tonight. Odds are he’s streaking down the interstatewebs right now. Grab the taser, let’s go get him.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir went 1-for-4 with a HR.
- Brett Wallace was 2-for-4.
- A good outing for Mitchell Boggs. He allowed 3 runs in 6.1 innings striking out 4 and walking 2.
- Josh Kinney didn’t do him any favors allowing both inherited runners to score.
- Royce Ring couldn’t get things done either. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk while failing to record an out.
- Jess Todd finished off the game pitching a scoreless inning. He allowed 1 of 3 inherited runners to score striking out 2 and walking 1.
- Daryl Jones and Daniel Descalso went 2-for-4.
- Pete Kozma and Tony Cruz both recorded a double and a single.
- None of the pitchers were good. Ryan Kulik allowed 5 runs, Marco Gonzalez allowed 3 and Eddie Degerman allowed 2. Collectively, they struck out 5, walked 2 and allowed 3 HRs. Blech.
Palm Beach 3, Brevard County 8
- Palm Beach falls to the Manatees. Almost as terrible a mascot as that angry apple team.
- Adron Chambers was 1-for-5 with a triple. That’s his 9th triple on the season.
- Aaron Luna was 2-for-5 with a triple.
- Jose Garcia was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
- Chuckie Fick did not have a good night. 12 hits in 4 innings. Yowza. On top of that, 3 of them were HRs. He was tagged for 8 ER striking out 2.
- Jorge Rondon followed him with 4 hitless frames walking 2 and striking out 3.
- Blake King is having a confusing year. He’s struck out 48 in 33 innings. Great. He’s allowed just 10 hits. Great. He’s walked 27. Terrible. All said, he’s been good but it’s hard to know what to make of a player with such terrible command who is also unhittable. His ERA stands at 1.08 on the season.
- Alex Castellanos, leading off rather than Brett Lilley, was 2-for-3.
- Charles Cutler was 3-for-5 with a triple. He’s hitting .369 on the season.
- Travis Mitchell was 3-for-4.
- Brett Lilley was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
- Niko Vasquez was 0-for-2 with a walk. He committed 2 errors, numbers 24 and 25.
- Somehow, QC managed to win despite themselves. They committed 8 errors with 3 coming from Castellanos.
- Adam Veres allowed 5 hits in 5 IP good for 3 runs (2 earned).
- Scott McGregor pitched 3 innings striking out 3 and allowing an unearned run.
- David Carpenter pitched a scoreless 9th striking out 1.

Didn’t Luhnow say that Luis De La Cruz would start in JC?
Check that. I’m getting the De La Cruz’s mixed up. I meant Roberto.
kozma keeps on keeping on
It would seem to me it is about time to push Gorgen up to Springfield. Regardless of what they said with Herron, there is not much there blocking anyone. The question with Gorgen will always be how his stuff will play out at higher levels. Might as well find out now. He doesn’t strike me as the guy that needs development time or to add much polish. Either he has it or he doesn’t. I kinda view him as similar to PJ Walters in that respect. Might as well find out now, while you have a staff that is giving up touchdowns daily.

Tyler Herron pitched 3 scoreless innings for Altoona tonight, 1 hit, 1 walk
Looks like Kozma is doing like I said he would all along. As far as Gorgen its too bad the cards didn’t draft his identical twin brother also. I see Gorgen much like Todd as undersized. He will need to have some pretty good stuff too remain as a starter as he advances up the organization.
Whats going on with K Greene at AAA? He has not played since he was 3 for 4 and had 2 errors the other night. Did something go down? Anyone know?
I believe K. Greene was sent back to St. Louis for evaluation.
redbird, Kozma is on a 4 game hitting streak. His previous 6 games, he was 2 for 19. Unless all along, you have said “Boy, that Kozma kid sure looks like a mediocre prospect at best”, then I’m not sure why you are taking credit for praising him. Oh yea, and you gotta love those 18 errors in 56 games also.
I like your optimism though.
Mark Shorey for the Hall of Fame!!!
Evidently Niko wants to bend over and take a dump in all of our cereals.
Is he on the verge of being an ex prospect, or will we have to wait another year before we bestow such a foul smelling moniker?
Lots of recent moves:
PJ Walters to StL
Brian Barden to Memphis
Sam Freeman to Springfield
Jorge Rondon to PB from EST
Matt Frevert to Quad Cities
Still no Charlie Cutler promotion. Someday, maybe.
Thanks Grant!
Was just wondering if anything was up with K Greene. I also noticed that Pete Parise was promoted to AAA along with Barden being sent down. I know Walters was called up just wondering what the other move on the Memphis roster will be if one is needed at all.
Tomm,
In response to you posts. Not sure what your posting for… but if your only posting to make smart remarks… thanks. Great to see how your so negative about guys that are actually improving in the system and not getting worse. Just like T Greene’s 11 errors at AAA. I don’t see him racking up the errors at the big club like that. The first baseman has something to do with scooping up low throws. If the 1st baseman sucks at scooping low throws than expect a lot of additional errors.
I’m guessing they don’t want to promote Cutler because he might get in the way of Matt Pagnozzi’s destiny to be a major league catcher.
id say niko is far from being an ex prospect, last time this year he wasnt even playing pro ball, he is 19, probably going to need some time
I figure with Niko it’s one of two things: Either we made too much of his great start last year in an ideal environment for hitters, or we’re making too much of his terrible start this year in a tough environment for hitters.
It doesn’t seem likely that we were right both times — that he was good last year but forgot how to play baseball when he got to QC in September.
The optimist in me says that if he could hit last year, he can hit, period. Two sub-Mendoza months don’t negate whatever talent he showed his first time out.
@ Redbird: Both members on the left side of the QC infield have 20+ errors: Castellanos and Vasquez. My impressions after having watched both of these guys in person and on tv is that Vasquez will be fine. Castellanos’ defense is terrible, I think his glove is made out of rock instead of leather. The first baseman doesn’t help things out either. I have watched Morales for 2 years in QC and his defense is horrible.
Anyone going to make a comment about the 20-year old throwing 4 no-hit innings at Palm Beach?

Not every young prospect who starts out slow is Daryl Jones, who was all tools and projection until his breakout year last year, three years after he was drafted. But the case can be made for Vasquez. Remember he was the 91st overall pick last year and has lots of tools. We can’t judge right now.
Responding to waldub reply. i don’t know how many games you have seen for QC to complain about the ss Vazquez & 3rd now 2nd baseman Castellanos. I have gone to 17 games and you are wrong about them not being defensive players… These kids yes have made alot of errors but alot of those errors have been on complicated hits that they stopped. In addition Castellano has never played 3rd but is willing to learn & play any position and was improving on 3rd until they moved him to 2nd. That kid is an outstanding player & has what it takes to succeed higher so does Niko. There have been alot of errors made by other players in QC but for some reason they don’t get charged with it. Castellanos not only plays 2nd but with his speed runs out to the outfield multiple times to get the outs. Niko has also run outfield to get fly outs. They are both talented. In reference to Niko not batting well Travis mitchell has been in Rookie leaque for over 2 years. He was a great CF but never good batter and look at him now. He’s doing great. Everyone has bad times Niko will be fine. Castellanos had 3 errors yesterday but if u were at the game u would of seen him get hit by pitch on the 1st at bat. We found out the kid had a swollen hand & still kept playing. That’s a true player..!! He hasn’t made any errors since playing 2nd base until yesterday. So stop talking abt our players. Cutler is an amazing batter, just needs a little more practice behind the plate to get players out on steals but he is also a player that should be promoted.
What is confusing about Blake King? He has a 1.08 ERA for the first half of the season. He has 50 strikeouts in 34 innings….he has 28 walks granted, but they don’t score. He has only given up 10 hits and 4 earned runs in 34 innings. He has always been on the mound to strikeout batters and has always had more walks than normal…but the fewest hits and runs scored against him. He should have made “All star”. He struggled the last 2 years trying to recover from the pitching coaches forcing him to change his mechanics..he is back on track and his stats show that he should move up in the system.
because with blake king those runners will score a lot more often as he progresses through the levels
Karrie-
I said Niko Vasquez will be fine. I think he is an exciting player to watch.
I have my opinion on Castellanos, and my opinion is that he is not very good defensively. I hope he improves, but every game I have seen (10+) he has not done well. Everyone can have their opinion, and I will continue to express my opinions after watching the games.
I don’t think Morales helps Castellanos or Vasquez with the amount of errors they have. He is a poor 1st baseman defensively (and his swing is too long to advance much offensively).
Cutler is a guy that needs to move up. Did anyone realize he was a top 200 rated prospect coming out of high school in 2005?
