The Cardinals play on ESPN and get dominated by Cliff Lee. If you’ve come here for good news, go try the LOLcats site or something. The farm system decided to collectively crap the bed in conjunction with the big league team.
- I don’t even want to know who pitched in this game.
- HAHAHAHA.* Casey Rowlett pitched the 9th. Call him up!!! He’s the new Aaron Miles!
- Kat Maekawa started and pitched 4 innings allowing 3 unearned runs. He wasn’t terrible striking out 3 and walking 3.
- Ian Ostlund was terrible. He allowed 9 runs in the 5th retiring just 2 batters.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir was 1-for-4 but did hit a HR.
- Khalil Greene got the start at 3rd. I don’t know what to say about the Cardinals’ handling of this situation. On one hand you want to applaud them for not abandoning Greene and working with him. On the other hand, if his bat isn’t going to play at SS, it isn’t going to play at 3rd. Now you’ve got him taking at bats from Wallace in Memphis.
- Brett Wallace did pinch hit but was 0-for-1. This looks like a horrible rush job by the Cardinals. He’s got a .607 OPS in Memphis.
- Daryl Jones, Pete Kozma and Daniel Descalso each went 1-for-4.
- Mark Hamilton doesn’t seem like the same player that was re-establishing himself as a potential prospect. He went 0-for-4 again with 3 Ks.
- Brian Broderick pitched 6 innings allowing 6 runs (4 ER) on 9 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 2.
Palm Beach 3, Brevard County 6
- Adron Chambers was 1-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- Shane Peterson was 2-for-4. The power hasn’t shown up for Peterson this year though he’s shown good plate discipline. He’s hitting .296/.362/.422 on the season.
- Nick Additon lasted just 3 innings allowing 3 ER. After posting a 2.50 ERA last year in QC and striking out nearly a batter an inning, Palm Beach has been a rough go of it for the command and control lefty. The walks are coming at a much higher pace and the strikeouts have slowed. That makes for a bad combination although his ERA of 3.52 doesn’t look terrible, this hasn’t been a good start for Additon.
- Adam Reifer pitched a scoreless frame allowing 1 hit and striking out 2.
- Frederick Perejo and Travis Mitchell were both 2-for-4. Mitchell doubled.
- QC had 8 hits but only one extra base hit.
- A solid start for Hector Cardenas who allowed 3 ER over 6 innings. He walked 0 batters but had 7 hits against striking out 4.
- Ramon Delgado finished off the game pitching 2 innings striking out 2 and allowing 2 hits.
The Cardinals farm system has petitioned to use aluminum bats to help their entire system break out of it’s recent slump. The request was denied but MiLB administrators suggested they contact the recently retired Sammy Sosa about how to properly feign ignorance of corked bats. Serious consideration is being given to this suggestion. The major league club offered some of their bats to the minor league teams as a pick me up for the youngsters. They were returned with a note that read, “we wanted better bats, not purses.” Skip Schumaker thought it brought out the color of his eyes.
*Laugh or cry. You pick.

I don’t have a problem with the Wallace rush-job. It sounded like he was being pitched around in AA, so what was the point of leaving him there? I’d be surprised if he can’t break out of the slump, and the instruction at third can’t be all that different between AA and AAA.
it would be worse for Wallace now if they were to send him back down. this current slump is a good lesson for him and it will make him better in the long run. hopefully he can pull out by sept. and be a call up
Curt Smith is performing at Springfield, his 4th stop in under one and a half seasons. We should send him back down to PB. this is nuts. Instead of letting him continue to progress let’s keep a 3rd catcher; one who couldn’t hit A pitching (and still doesn’t have a AA hit). I just don’t understand why we’re being aggressive with some guys; almost to fault, while others get promoted and perform only to be stepped back down a league. I just can’t follow the logic.
This just doesn’t make any sense Matt Arburr stays at AA Curt Smith sent down? Other than the fact that Matt Arburr is a huge man… and I mean “HUGE” he strikes out all the time and hasn’t changed his strike outs at any level. If he were Adam Dunn this may be something but I don’t think he’s the next Adam Dunn.
Also Joe Mather was put back on the DL. Any word on his wrist bothering him again?
The K Greene deal is really a nightmare. Paying a guy $6.5M who can’t hit or field any better than the guys that are making the league min (Brendan & T Greene). What a mess. It doesn’t matter what he did 2 or 3 years ago. Apparently there is a reason that he is not the same player he was when he hit .273 or hit 27 hr’s and SD knew it.
Check that… K Grene didn’t hit as well as Brendan or T Greene have at STL. Brendan is hitting .299 and T Grene .262 to K Grrene’s .200 avg. Please donate money to Brendan & T Greene… as they need to be paid more than Adam Kennedy who is playing in Oakland and K Greene who is just not performing as well as either of them.
Doesn’t Peterson have 5-6 HR’s at Palm Beach? If so, I believe that is decent power in the FSL. Usually the sluggers get about 20 a year if I remember right. So that would put Peterson in the 15 range.
An ISO of .130 doesn’t excite me for a corner outfielder.
Wallace will see time in the majors this year. Like AZ said at VEB, this team looks to be multiple bats away from contending. We need a high OBP guy to play up the middle and hit near the top of the order. We need more power–potentially Wallace. We need a right handed bat that plays second, ss, or left that can hit lefthanders consitently.
Wallace will see time at third in the majors this year because he represents a solution to at least one of those problems. I assume there is a free agent that will handle another hole. If we can get a player with a year left on his contract at the trade deadline that fills the other hole, we might have all the pieces in place to make a run at 95-100 wins.
I don’t see any way Wallace gets called up. Why start his clock? More cons than pros.
Agreed with Stan.
Unless Big Wallace all of a sudden starts hitting .400 or .350 for the entire month of July & August even I would be surprised to see him. And everyone knows I am all about promoting from within the org.
double agreed … plus Wallace isn’t showing a lot of power right now. He needs a full year (and maybe even a little of next year) to develop.
I think everyone can agree that this season is looking like a big step back for our minor league system as a whole compared to last year.
Mather back to the DL, guess he won’t be coming up anytime soon.
anthony reyes had tommy john surgery…i hate that for him, but can’t say i didn’t see it coming…his mechanics scared me
I love that the organization put him on the DL for a genuine mental disorder and now they think he can be cured of it in less than a month? That’s how psychology works? No wonder they all wear corduroy jackets. There billable office hours must be non-existent!
the purses also went well with teams fabulous summer outfits
Not worried about Peterson’s power production in the pitcher-friendly FSL.
He’s still pretty young and on the Daniel Descalso track; an under-the-radar/”boring” pick/”low ceiling” guy that will surprise a lot of people with his production as he grows and moves into environments that are not dominated by big parks/pitching.
