Kevin Goldstein’s take on the Cardinals draft:
Miller could be a case of highway robbery at #19, and the Cardinals definitely focused on the higher-ceiling types with the majority of their high picks. They’ve been a successfully drafting team of late, and 2009 should continue that trend.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir was 2-for-4 with a double. In June, he’s hit .328/.425/.657. I still think he’s missed his chance at securing a middle infield spot with St. Louis but good for him that he’s coming around.
- BDub was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Adam Ottavino followed up his best outing of the season with a stinker. 5 ER in 4 innings. He walked 5 and struck out 4.
- Pete Parise struck out the side in his inning of work.
- Tyler Henley went 0-for-1 but walked twice.
- Daniel Descalso was 2-for-4 with a double. His season line now stands at a wicked .329/.405/.531.
- Trey Hearne went 7 strong innings striking out 6. He allowed 2 ER on 6 hits and 3 walks.
- Eduardo Sanchez struck out 2 in a perfect 8th.
- Francisco Samuel had another sketchy outing allowing 1 hit, 1 walk , 1 ER and 1 strikeout in the 9th.
- Jared Bogany was 2-for-5.
- Charles Cutler was 4-for-5.
- Osvaldo Morales went yard.
- Jon Edwards went 3-for-4.
- Death by a thousand paper cuts for Beloit as the River Bandits had 11 singles. O and then the knife wound from Morales’ HR.
- Arquimedes Nieto allowed 2 runs (1 earned) over 5.2 innings. He struck out 3, walked 2 and allowed 6 hits.
- David Carpenter picked up the win despite allowing 2 runs in his inning of work.
- Matt Carpenter (how many carpenters do we need in the organization?) playing 3B went 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Ryde Rodriguez was 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Jairo Martinez went 2-for-4.
- Batavia one-hit Auburn.
- Michael Blazek struck out 4 in 5 innings of work. He allowed 1 ER in the first walking 2 and allowing 1 hit.
- Daniel Calhoun struck out 2 in 3 innings of work striking out 1.
- LaCurtis Mayes struck out 1 in an inning of work.

Until we get familiar with them could you guys indicate which guys are 09 draftees?
Have there been any press releases on what non-drafted free agents we’ve signed? I know these would have the least chance of becoming top prospects, but just wanted to try to familiarize myself with players who were not drafted this year but playing at the short season clubs. Kinda along the same lines as sluhser.
Slsuher,
The 09 draftees are at Memphis & Springfield lol.
Nice article on the KOZ and Charles Cutler continues to hit. The only thing about Cutler hitting at Quad Cities is I can remember another guy “Brandon Buckman” that hit .341 at Quad cities two years ago that got released from the organization last month. So it doesn’t always translate to the higher levels. I’m also interested to see what type of development Ryde “The Ryde” Rodriguez has this year. He’s a very intriging prospect with his size.
Joe Mather? Anyone know why he was put on the DL again? Its just really too bad he broke the bone in his wrist last Sep. Otherwise I believe he would be at STL contributing.
Brett Wallace hasn’t gone 0-fer in a game he started since June 11th, a streak of 9 starts, with 3 multi-hit games in there, now.
This pleases me.
Ok BDUB or Brett “Big All Over” Wallace I prefer has hit .353 in his last 10 games. The only problem is he only has 2 doubles and 1 HR not much power in those hits. If he was 6-2 205 as he is listed on the Memphis roster I guess that might be ok. But he is more like 260 and looks more pudgy then last year. Let see if he can do this another 10 games and hit with a little more pop as in doubles.
but it’s a “fit” 260!
The memphis club has reported the whereabouts of their missing offensive mojo. It is believed that khalil greene discovered said mojo in an unused locker and took it with him to KC.
Also I have my eye on mr. (say it with me: REEday) rodriguez.think he might have a good season.
Ryde Rodriguez has gotta be pushing what… 43 years old?
Seriously how old is this guy? I feel like he’s been around forever.
I think Ryde is like 20 or 21 or something. We got him just a couple years ago.
Because I’m so shameless, I’ll repeat the quip I made during the draft coverage chat:
“If the Cards get any more Carpenters in the system, they’ll
(wait for it!)
have to
(here it comes!)
start a union!”
Ha!
Redbird-
Yeah…Hitting stat don’t mean too much until the player hits Double-A. They are nice and all but it is alarming how many single-A hitters fizzle out at the next level.
I’ve seen Brett Wallace with my own eyes and can state for a fact that if he’s at 260 now, then he’s gained 45-50 pounds since ST.
yea i was trying to figure out where redbird was coming up with 260 for wallace…i have never thought he looked that big…225 maybe, but not 260
adam
Does anyone realize that if Ryan/Greene sticks at SS next season and Wallace/Mather starts at 3rd our entire starting lineup could be drafted/developed through our farm system?
That sounds like a great achievement but it obviously only holds any value if we actually win.
What has been widely discussed and is of great importance is drafting/developing starting pitching. Come on Shelby!
I was at the Springfield game last night and Eduardo Sanchez was very impressive. Batters were jumping away from the plate and the umpire would call it a strike. They were seriously confused. He would throw 99 on one pitch and 76 on the next. And both were called strikes or were swings and misses.
I know he is new in Springfield. Is he supposed to be this good or is this unexpected? I hadn’t paid much attention to him before last night.
Wallace was listed at 260 this year when he was on the Springfield roster.
255
Ok Sorry about one more reply…lol. But lets try to clear up the 255 or 260 figure. Let look at Mark Shorey to Brett Wallace to Colby Ramus.
Mark Shorey 6-0 230
Brett Wallace 6-2 205 …LOL
Colby Rasmus 6-2 200
Who appears bigger when watching the games? I know Wallace is listed at 6-2 205 on the Memphis Roster but Colby is 6-2 200. There is aleast 55 pounds of muscle in Wallaces tree trunks. He was also listed at 255 on SF’s roster earlier this year.
I think Ludwick would be the only starter not brought up through our system should SS and 3B be filled as you suggest. point well made and I think this is a central issue to making sure we have enough money to resign Pujols.
Don’t sell yourself short Arch. We all wish we’d thought of that joke.
