Winner, winner chicken dinner as almost everyone won tonight (except for JC) and every team but Quad Cities was in action.  One game short on either side of the perfect everyone plays, everyone wins DFR.  One day we will get there.

The GCL League started today and as you know we will not be covering them in the DFRs. There will be coverage of the team however, just not in a DFR basis.

UPDATE: I’ll be doing a bi-weekly GCL update so we can see who is doing well/not so well from a macro level.

Let’s get to the action.

Memphis 6, Omaha 3

  • Mitch Boggs started the game for Memphis and did ok except for one bad inning (the 6th) in which he was chased by 2 HRs. He struck out 5 and walked 3, so his peripherals aren’t tremendous.
  • Matt Scherer relieved Boggs and pitched a total of 1.2 innings allowing only 1 hit.
  • Royce Ring did his 8th inning lefty thing.
  • Jess Todd closed down the game with zeroes across the board.
  • Brian Barden, 3B went 3-4 with a HR and 2 RBIs.
  • Sugar Shane Robinson, CF also had a HR and tacked on a double on the way to 2-4.
  • Jarrett Hoffpauir, 2B went 3-4 with a triple, two runs scored and a walk.

Springfield 5, Arkansas 2

  • Lance Lynn continued his “just win baby” ways by giving up only 2 runs over 5.1 innings. He struck out 4 and walked 0. He did allow 8 hits however.
  • Eduardo Sanchez came in with 1 runner aboard and stranded him. He pitched a total of 1.2 innings and struck out 3. As Matt Baker smiles to himself.
  • Tyler Norrick struck out the side in the 8th.
  • Francisco Samuel nailed down the save for his 18th of the year.
  • Dan Descalso, 2B 2-5, ho-hum. Just another day at the office.
  • Tony Cruz, 3B went 1-4 with a double.
  • James Rapoport, CF 1-4 with a stolen base.
  • Peter Kozma, SS was leading off and went 1-3 with 2 walks.

Palm Beach 5, Sarasota 4

  • The Cardinals scored the winning run in the bottom of the ninth on a single, sacrifice, ground out and wild pitch after Adam Reifer blew the save in the 9th.
  • Nick Additon pitched well over 5 innings giving up 2 runs (1 earned). He struck out 7 and walked only 1.
  • Tom Eager pitched 3 shutout innings, striking out 2.
  • Adron Chambers, CF continues his hot streak going 3-5 with his first HR of the year.
  • Aaron Luna, 2B and Curt Smith, 1B both went 2-4.
  • Sugar 2 Shane Peterson, LF had a solo HR on the way to 1-3.

Batavia 7, Williamsport Crazy Eyed Hobo Loggers 0

  • Deryk Hooker returned from his 50-game drug suspension to pitch great. He gave up 2 hits in 4 innings striking out 4 and walking only 1. He also plunked a guy.
  • Tyler Skater Boi Lavigne pitched the next 4 and was even more successful giving up only 1 hit and striking out 4 and walking 0.
  • Daniel Richardson mopped up the 9th.
  • Matt Carpenter, 3B was 3-4 with a double.
  • Easy Ryde Rodriquez, RF went 1-3 with 2 RBIs.
  • Devin Goodwin, 2B out of where? (Delta St. University!) went 3-4 with a double.

Johnson City 5, Kingsport 7

  • Reynier Gonzalez started for JC and was stopped after 1.1 innings, giving up 5 runs.
  • Jose Rada tried to put out the fire but let one of Gonzalez’s runners score and gave up 1 of his own over 2.2 innings.
  • Andrew Moss pitched in for the next 3 innings in the scramble as he allowed 2 hits, 2 walks and struck out 2.
  • Michael Thompson gave up 1 run in the 9th.
  • Matt Adams, 1B went 3-5 with a HR and 3 RBIs.
  • Edgar Lara, RF, who I feel like has been around forever went 2-3 with a HR of his own.
  • Raniel Rosario, LF went 2-4 with 2 doubles.
  • Robert Stock, C, 2009 second round pick went 0-3 with 1 walk.

I’m glad to see Deryk Hooker back. I was pretty high on him going into the season. I do still like him and hope he has a good second half to establish himself.
Has anyone ever said what drug he was busted for? “Drug of abuse” generally means pot, pain killers, rec drugs, correct?

Nice showing for the farm tonight. Hopefully the whole system can wake up.

  2. Alex says:

Springfield’s win was a big one; they finish the first half in a tie for first place, no?

  3. Grant says:

Why no GCL love in the DFRs? There seems to be quite a bit of talent on the roster.

I hope Deryk Hooker can stay on the straight and narrow. He’s got a chance to be a pretty good prospect.

Great debut by former San Diego State hurler Tyler Lavigne. Stephen Strasburg who?

    • azruavatar says:

The GCL question comes up every year. The short of it is that there’s too much ambiguity as to level of competition and the players are far less well known. Keeping up with 6 teams for 3 months is about all we can handle on a nightly basis.

      • erik says:

there are a few more well known players this year (de la cruz, valera, virgil hill), but yeah, a weekly update should be more than sufficient. the GCL is basically just exhibition games.

  4. Redbird says:

Joe Mather has a 3rd sergery on wrist. Likely done for season. This is really too bad. The guy has worked so hard and it was really looking like this season would be his first full season in the bigs. Just really a shame he broke his wrist last season I hope he’s able to come back from this and the cards retain his contract again on him.

  5. Will says:

I really hope that all of our early draft picks this year do well, but am I the only person that wants Robert Stock to struggle at the plate so he can take to the mound next year?

  6. turkey tom says:

is it ok to be pretty excited about our second base porpscts with danny d and aaron luna???

    because i am

  7. nmstar says:

I’d much rather see Stock succeed as a catcher. Our system is not exactly loaded with catching prospects.

  8. Jeff Roman says:

Looks like Hector Hernandez, LHP out of Puerto Rico has signed (10th round). He has been assigned to the aforementioned GCL team.

  9. sluhser says:

Matt Adams has sky rocketed to the top of my pet prospects list. Those gaudy numbers (despite being at the D2 level) are too much to not love.

  10. BigJawnMize says:

    nmstar–

I agree. I much rather Stock succeed as a catcher. The thing is I really want to see him blow away the competition at this level or completely fall flat on his face. We don’t want any gray area on this. He needs to make this decesion easy for everyone.

  11. Jeff Roman says:

And the 12-fingered bandit Oneli Perez (pitcher) who has been signed from the Indy Leagues has been assigned to Memphis.

  12. JC says:

Roman – Where are you getting this info on the Hernandez and Perez signings? I am very excited about this Hernandez kid even though there doesn’t seem to be much out there on him.

  13. VolsnCards5 says:

1-3 with 2 BBs…i like that line from kozma…walks are good

i agree with the matt adams comment too…him and matt carpenter are both exciting late round picks

  14. JC says:

Thanks Roman! Interesting they have Bighames as an OF on the GCL roster. Guess they are already convinced he is not a SS?

  15. VolsnCards5 says:

hmm…binghames as an OF? i’d like to see him play his way off of short

  16. Gruntosaurus says:

I’d really like to see a good scouting report on Descalso. From a purely statistical perspective, he is starting to look like a very interesting guy — but statistics don’t always tell the whole story in the minors. How does he look in the field? At the plate? What can he be persuaded to chase (that maybe an AA pitcher can’t always throw)? How’s his footwork on the deuce? Has he grown into his body, or is there still physical change going on? As unpalatable as the question is, what’s his probable value in a (choke) trade?

  17. VolsnCards5 says:

where did david washington end up being put…i thought he was an interesting pick

  18. ArRedbird says:

On Descalso — check out Prospect Prospect – http://www.projectprospect.com/article/2009/06/20/deep-dynasty-fishing-9-on-the-rise — recently posted (June 20).

2B Aaron Luna’s .893 OPS in the Florida State League makes him a prospect worth watching.

  19. Snayke says:

Can we finally declare Descalso a legitimate prospect?

  20. JC says:

Snayke – I think you can definitely declare Descalso a legit prospect. Anyone that produces at a AA or above for an extended amount of time is a legit prospect. Now until he does it for a full year or more then he is just a legit prospect to watch…but I don’t see any reason why he couldn’t be strolling 2B for the Cards at some point next year if he keeps this up.

  21. tenncardfan says:

I hope Sanchez and Norrick are trade untouchables. We obviously have relievers to trade, but those two…I hope not.
