I love this article about Tyler Henley. If he wasn’t already one of my favorite prospects, he certainly would be after reading this.
Cardinals’ 8th round pick to sign.
Also, as an FYI, the S-Cardinals have set themselves up for a tiebreaker to get into the playoffs for the first half this Friday against Tulsa.
5 teams in action tonight with a high scoring game at the end a nailbiter to start off and a pitching duel in the middle.
- Shane Robinson took his little sugar bat and hit the ball over the big sugar fence. He was 1-for-4.
- Big Miles was 3-for-4 with 2 homeruns and a double.
- Allen Craig was 2-for-4 playing first base.
- Brett Wallace was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Clayton Mortesen had a somewhat unlucky outing. He only allowed 7 hits (1 HR) but was tagged for 4 walks runs. Even stranger, he walked no one while striking out 6.
- Jess Todd had a rare meltdown allowing 2 runs in the 9th and needing Charlie Manning to bail him out of hot water and get the last out of the game.
- Springfield had 5 hits including a double and a triple. They failed to walk during the game.
- Brian Broderick allowed 10 hits over 6 innings of work for 3 runs (1 earned).
- Brad Furnish, sporting a 7.90 ERA, finished out the game with a scoreless frame and a strikeout.
- The boxscore makes this look like a pretty futile game. You can always find the in game reaction here on Matt Baker’s twitter.
- Adron Chambers was 2-for-4 with a walk.
- Shane Peterson was 3-for-4 with a double.
- Francisco Rivera and Paul Vasquez were both 2-for-4.
- Scott Gorgen had a solid game allowing 3 runs (2 earned) over 7 innings. He walked 1, allowed 5 hits and struck out 4.
- Matt Carpenter, general foreman, was playing 1B and went 2-for-4.
- Batavia tallied just 4 hits and 2 walks against 12 strikeouts.
- Tyler Leach, a 2005 draftee, tossed 4 innings allowing 3 hits and 1 ER. Unfortunately that’s all Williamsport would need.
- Christopher Corrigan and Joshua Squatrito (that’s Spanish for ‘little squater’ but the kid didn’t know he was supposed to be a catcher) tossed 5 innings of shutout ball in relief.
- Luis Mateo, playing 2B, went 3-for-6.
- Michael Swinson was 3-for-4 with a double, triple and pair of walks.
- Matthew Adams was 2-for-3 with a walk.
- Richard Racobaldo was 2-for-4 with a walk.
- JC put up 14 hits and 7 walks.
- Pablo Ortiz gets the nod as the best JC pitcher for the night striking out 5 in 4 innings. He allowed 2 hits and 2 runs (1 earned).

For Mortensen 4 Walks= 4 runs
thanks — finger/brain got crossed
The guy to watch is Joe Babrick at GCL. This is his 2nd season there and so far 2 games 7 hits. He’s a 6 ft 6 in 215 pd outfilelder they drafted last year out of high school.
Wallace “BDUB” with another 2 hits… Hey Hey Hey!!!
Also a nice outing at GCL by Patrick Daugherty 3 IN 4 SO 0 Hits!
BDUB 255
That Tyler Henley story sounded like Skip’s fantasy
Something to watch for in the Memphis game tonight is the PJ Walters vs Travis Metcalf battle, Metcalf is 5-for-8 with a pair of homers and doubles along with a walk off PJ the last 2 years in Triple-A while picking up 8 RBI in the 4 games, and even worse Metcalf is due going 1-for-25 with 13 strikeouts over his last 6 games.
I don’t think that was Paul Cruz who went 2-4 at PB. Best I can tell he is still at QC. Maybe you meant Vasquez?
Blech — yes. I got the first name and botched the name actually in the boxscore.
was Mortersen unlucky or “unlucky” like Wellemeyer? Can’t believe Wellemeyer pitches so horrid and says he was unlucky.
yay…niko got a hit…two bad he also struck out twice…he is really scuffling this year
his scouting report from last year’s Appy League Top 20 was also less than stellar. KLaw really liked him. I don’t know what to believe.
Goldstein was impressed too. He’s still raw. He’s got time.
I watched the Memphis game last night and I thought Mortensen pitched pretty well. Jon Jay cost him one run with a really poor play in right field. Mortensen hit his spots. Many times Mortensen had hitters set up for a strikeout and then threw the wrong pitch. I’m not convinced Anderson’s pitch selection was what it should have been. The last couple of times that I have watched Wellemeyer he has missed his spots big time. Many of his pitches have been up in the zone. He has been “lucky” that he didn’t get beat up worse than he did.
Glad to see Stidham sign. With Descalso, and possibly Luna, as good 2B options, Stidham is another good guy to throw into the mix. The system appears to have some viable 2B prospects in their system now.
DJ tools and Brett Wallace will be at the Future’s Game for STL according to Matthew Leach’s twitter.
have we now signed all of our top ten other than miller? I don’t think I’m missing more than one there. the club’s done a good job of getting these guys signed.
@tom s. … haven’t seen a bittle signing yet, but he was a senior with arm troubles. shouldn’t be a tough sign.
No Bittle and no Conley, no. 7, the outfielder from Washington.
The signee I would like to see is:
Andrew M Hillis RHP R / R 6’06″ 218 1990-11-06
Living in Nashville, I never heard anything about Hillis before the draft. Certainly nothing like Sonny Gray last year. Of course Gray has 1st round talent, doesn’t sound like Hillis does or he certainly would have been drafted before 49th round even though he wears makeup (or something like that).
