I realize that fans are placing pressure on management to shell out big bucks. However, I look at this guy’s swing and see weaknesses. It lacks weight transfer and he doesn’t generate enough lower body strength. Of course, this can be corrected with good coaching, but I’m unclear that is present in the Cardinals minor leagues.

Jorge Arangure on twitter natch is reporting the Cards will sign Mateo for $3.1 million and that Mo went to Mateo’s house to close the deal.

This kids swing and build remind me of Fred McGriff, but Griffey Jr. works too. If he turns out to be either one we’ll all be pretty dang happy in Cardinaland.

question…why is he being limited to a corner outfield spot already…can he not handle center?

to me, it looks like he has some power in his swings…i could see 15-20 homers once he figures out a command of the strike zone…anyone know what his speed score is?

his game swings did not look anything like his BP swings to me…but i guess that is too be expected…hopefully he figures how to translate that over into a game setting

sounds like to me that the cardinals have a draft budget and an international budget…which to me is a good thing

Nothing wrong with his in-game swings. He just got fooled on a couple, but the swings look great.

His swing/approach look very advanced and polished for his age (assuming he is in fact only 16 years old). That’s exciting because it seems like he is a safe bet to hit and there will be very little chance that he will completely flop. However, if it already looks like he is going to be limited to a corner outfield spot, I don’t like the odds of him becoming more than an average player relative to others at those positions. Good to see the effort in signing players like this, though.
