As we approach July 2nd (heard anything about Wagner Mateo lately? me neither), Ben Badler has some notes on last year’s top international signees including Cardinal bonus baby Roberto de la Cruz.

John Sickels covers some sleepers including David Kopp (here) and Deryk Hooker (here).

Memphis 2, Omaha 1

  • Sugar Shane Robinson has a sweet 2-for-4 effort. Pun intended.
  • Mark Shorey was 2-for-2 with a double and a walk.
  • Evan MacLane went 7.2 innings allowing just 1 ER on 4 hits. He allowed more air outs than groundouts striking out just 1 so consider this a BABIP friendly night.
  • Jess Todd struck out 1 in his inning of work. If you’re committed to putting Jess Todd in the pen and watch him pitch like this, there’s no reason to not trade one of your young pitchers in the majors. The depth is there and the Cardinals have other needs. Perez, Motte and McClellan are all replaceable commodities at this point.

Springfield 10, Tulsa 2

  • Daryl Jones was 1-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Tyler Henley went 2-for-4 with a double, a HR and a walk. Could we have asked for a better season thus far from Henley? With his slash stats at .316/.378/.476, he’s firmly put himself on the Cardinals top prospect list.
  • Mark Hamilton was 2-for-4 with a double and a HR.
  • Tony Cruz was 2-for-5.
  • Trey Hearne hit the S-Cards franchise first inside the park HR. He pitched 6 solid innings allowing just 1 run on 4 hits and 4 walks. I’m still not sold on Hearne’s stuff being good enough to project him to the majors but he’s having a great year for Springfield after being banished loaned to the Mexican League last year.
  • Eduardo Sanchez struck out 3 in 2 innings of work allowing a solo HR. He’s struck out 18 in 16 innings at Springfield and 44 in 41 innings overall this year. Combine that with just 11 walks and Sanchez has proven once again that the Cardinals know how to find RH relievers.
  • Francisco Samuel struck out 1 in a perfect 9th.
  • The win gives Springfield the first half victory and their second playoff berth in franchise history.

Palm Beach 3, Brevard County 4

  • Francisco Riviera was 2-for-3.
  • Palm Beach mustered just 5 hits. The Manatees have some wicked breaking pitches. The flippers give the ball extra spin.
  • Chuckie Fick had some command problems walking 4 in 5 innings. The 2 runs he allowed were unearned. He did record 10 of 12 outs on the ground.
  • Blake King struck out 4 in 2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks.

Quad Cities 4, Kane County 2

  • Better beer league team: Kane County or Brevard County?
  • Jared Bogany was 2-for-4.
  • Jason Stidham, 2B, and Charles Cutler both went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Osvaldo Morales flashed some power going 2-for-3 with a double, HR and a walk.
  • Kevin Thomas pitched 5.1 scoreless innings allowing 3 hits, walking 2 and striking out 3.
  • David Carpenter had a rough outing walking 3 and allowing a run while retiring just 2 batters.

Batavia 2, Jamestown 3

  • Ryde Rodriguez was 2-for-5 with a triple.
  • Niko Vasquez went 0-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • Batavia walked an amazing 10 times and had 8 hits. Not sure how you manage to score just 2 runs when you have 18 baserunners.
  • Not much to see on the pitching front. LaCurtis Mayes struck out 2 in his inning of work.

Johnson City 4, Burlington 0

  • Robert Stock was 2-for-4. It might not be a bad thing if he stuck at catcher. Our catching crop thinned out with cardsfan1′s report that Bryan Anderson injured himself in yesterday’s game.
  • Richard Racobaldo, 3B, went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Edgar Lara went 2-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
  • Yunier Castillo went 2-for-4.
  • Anthony Ferrara pitched 5 scoreless innings. He strick out 4 and allowed just 3 hits walking no one.
  • Michael Thompson struck out 3 in his 3 innings of work allowing 2 hits.
  • David Kington finished off the shutout striking out 2 in a perfect inning.

Pauly Shore aka “The Prospector” strikes again 2 for 2. While Bdub 255 was 1 for 3 tonight.

I went to the Springfield/Tulsa game tonight. Some notes:

Eduardo Sanchez was throwing gas. Like, harder than Samuel gas. Hearne looked really good, but as was mentioned earlier, not sure he has the stuff to make much of an impact at the ML level. Probably needs a better 3rd pitch.

Not sure why Kozma has so many errors on the year, but he looked fine today. No tough plays, but he made all the routine ones. Appears to have soft hands. Doesn’t get rid of the ball very quickly, which might be what causes the bad throws when he has to. Just a guess.

Henley and Delcasno both looked good at the plate. I like Jones’ patience. I don’t really see his power developing like some think it will, but his speed and eye are what will make or break him at the ML level. Sure wish he was a better CF canidate though. Oh, Jones tweaked an ankle or something, and was removed. Didn’t look too serious though.

Nice to see last years high upside high school LHP had a strong start to his season. Anyone else have decent aspirations for Ferrara?

  4. HL says:

Well, it looks like Tony is going to get his wish and Ludwick+RHP Reliever+Prospect for Holliday will get done.

So which prospect will it be? I’m hoping for the super gut punch that finally gets LaRussa fired and Jones is the piece that is sent. Jones then goes on to have a Bernie Williams like career and LaRussa has to answer for that on Judgement Day.

Ok, so maybe that is a bit much.

    nice little debut for stidham

  6. Indiana Cardinal says:

I don’t know if you caught the note at the end of the Ben Badler article linked above about the young Dominican SS Grabiel Hernandez. Sounds interesting. I realize he and others are a long way off, but if they do sign Mateo and keep that pipeline flowing it could get exciting. I think some of the Latin American guys such as Salas and Solano could start surfacing next year. I wish the IF Martinez all the luck in the world after the tragedies and injury bad luck he has suffered. Hopefully the Cards will be patient with him. I really liked what I read about him a couple of years ago.

  7. Chris says:

Descalso was also 2-4 with a double, walk and RBI last night. Kozma was 1-4 with a walk.

Nice to see Stidham get in the lineup quickly and start hitting. He’s 21 years old, which has normally meant a trip to the NYPL for Cardinals draftees, so they must really like his bat. Hopefully he can play a solid second base.

  8. bc says:

Daryl Jones = Bernard Gilkey (except not as a good of an arm)?

  9. bigchieftootiemontana says:

Good to see Wallace hitting better, great that he and DJTools will get a taste of Busch 3
this coming month in the Future’s Game, Hope Brett mashes a couple doubles and Jones flys for a triple!

Agree with sending Motte in a package, not sure Holliday is a good choice for the return.

It will be great news if Stock sticks at catcher, shouldn’t be a problem at JCity, next year will be a true indicator.

  10. bookerd says:

I don’t think LaRussa is the GM, so I don’t think he is one who would put Jones in the Holliday trade. That would be Mo.

Anderson and Allen Craig were put on the DL at Memphis anyone know what coresponding moves were made. Javier Brito was released a couple of days ago so he is not an option.

  11. southeast redbird says:

Wondering now that springfield has won a playoff berth, they’ll begin moving some up.

  12. Redbird says:

DJ Tools getting promoted to AAA

  13. ArRedbird says:

C Brandon Yarbrough has been activated from the DL to take Anderson’s spot.

Don’t know yet who’ll replace Craig.

  14. Redbird says:

    Matt Arburr to AAA

  15. sfcardfan says:

Redbird and Redbirdsays – where are you getting your info? I would think that Hamilton would get sent up considering how well he’s been doing and his age? I haven’t seen anything about Dj or Arburr getting moved.

  16. 3up3down25 says:

hamilton to AAA, making his debut in his former college park.

  17. sfcardfan says:

Oops- was distracted while typing – my question was just for redbird. Sorry.

  18. sfcardfan says:

Yet another oops! I just read on the Springfield News Leader that Hamilton has already been promoted to AAA. I apologize for the multiple posts.

  19. southeast redbird says:

Where do you guys get your info?
My crystal ball says Peterson up to replace Hamilton.
All second half moves will be for injuries, and may not be permanent.

  20. Shaneo69 says:

If Andrew Brown isn’t healthy enough to return, I would say Curt Smith would be back at Springfield to replace Hamilton.

  21. themop10 says:

If DJ Tools can’t play center, doesn’t have a great arm, and doesn’t have much power what tools does he really have? Speed and OBP%?

  22. southeast redbird says:

Done deal, NcCully signs for 100K and off to QC.

Really impressed, don’t think any organization has signed as many as them so quickly.

  23. Sportsman says:

just an fyi for anyone on cox cable in the SE, rebirds-zephyrs is on

surprise, redbirds shutout through 7 by soft-tossing lefty
