Jon Jay wants to hit better.

Pete Parise is having something of an under the radar season. A 2:1 strikeout ratio and a recent promotion to Memphis, Pete doesn’t really project to the majors but hopefully he can continue to have solid outings at AAA.

Memphis 2, New Orleans 3

  • BDubs goes 3-for-4 with a double and a HR.
  • Brian Barden played right field and went 0-for-3. Apparently the big league club isn’t the only one that likes to play their players out of position.
  • A solid if underwhelming outing from Adam Ottavino. He pitched 6.1 innings allowing 2 runs on 5 hits and 3 walks striking out 3. He hit two batters as well so command issues remain.
  • Matt Scherer pitched 1.2 scoreless innings striking out 3. Despite the shiny 2.35 ERA, Scherer doesn’t profile as more than the last man in the bullpen in the big leagues. He’s struck out 24 in 38 innings and walked 10.

Springfield 9, Tulsa 0

  • Antonio DeJesus was 2-for-6 with a double.
  • Kozmanaut and Daniel Descalso (still needs a nickname) both went 1-for-5. Descalso had a double.
  • James Rapoport went 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • Matthew Arburr went 2-for-5 with a double and a HR.
  • A well pitched outing for Ryan Kulik who threw 8 shutout frames allowing 5 hits and striking out 1.
  • Tyler Norrick pitched the last frame striking out 3 and walking 3.

Palm Beach 8, Brevard County 3

  • Chew on that you stupid manatees! I wonder if the manatees wear remetees? [/high five]
  • Aaron Luna was 3-for-5 with a pair of doubles.
  • Colt Sedbrook was 1-for-3 with a pair of walks.
  • Richard Castillo pitched 6 innings allowing just 3 hits and 2 ER. He struck out 9 but walked 5 in the process.
  • Casey Mulligan feels sorry for lonely one’s so he put 4 together. 1IP, 1 hit, 1 walk, 1K

Batavia 9, Jamestown 2

Johnson City 3, Burlington 6

  • Luis Mateo went 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Raniel Rosario was also 2-for-4 with a double playing LF.
  • Randy Santos struck out 4 over 4 innings of work. He walked 1 and allowed 6 hits getting tagged for 3 runs.
  • Kyle Heim struck out 2 in 2 innings of work allowing 1 unearned run on 1 hit.

Aaron Luna could become a big time prospect if he continues to hit. Great to see Ottavino have a nice outing

  2. Grant says:

You could come up with many nicknames using Descalso’s initials, but this is a family site :)

I know he had a decent outing tonight, but when do they seriously consider moving Ottavino to the ‘pen. I think he would profile better as a reliever, and you could throw him in the mix to replace Perez in the future. Thoughts?

I have to admit, I’m back on the Ottavino bandwagon.

They show a lot of New Orleans Zephyrs games where I live and I’ll tell you, it’s the first time I’ve ever seen Ottavino up close. He was really good tonight. I guess I was expecting him to be behind in the count a lot, leaving a lot of balls up but he has major league stuff without a doubt.

His FB and slider are both plus pitches and his slider was plus plus a few times. His fastball is an exciting offering as it had good, late life, while easily reaching 95-96. His 2 seemer is a little Roy Halladay-esque (I’m not kidding). It has nice arm side run as well as down. He wasn’t terribly consistent with his slider but he threw a few that were outstanding. I wouldn’t get too hung up on the two HBP, they were both balls that barely grazed the batter’s jerseys.

I will say that as well as he threw he never really “pitched.” If that makes sense. He never really carved any one up. I also never really saw a third pitch from him as he mainly threw his FB and got a lot of weak/weird looking swings from his slider.

I can say this, stuff isn’t Ottavino’s problem. He has plenty to get good hitters out. He hasn’t figured it out yet, that much is obvious from his stats, but I guess I was expecting a trainwreck, and I guess I was pleasantly surprised.

He might never figure it out, but I wouldn’t be surprised if next year he has a better go of AAA, then pitches in the bullpen in 2011 to get ready for the rotation sometime in 2011-2012.

  4. Redbird says:

    Bdub up to .282 now!

Also this was one of Ott’s better games. Stats don’t lie… they tell the truth about how consitant the guy is. To bad he will be left available this year to the Rule 5 draft. If he’s not protected there won’t be a next year at AAA. A club that sucks like SD or the Indians will pick him up and keep him on the big club.

  5. tom s. says:

I can’t imagine basically giving up on a first round pick who’s been moved aggressively if not outright rushed to aaa.I think next year we see a different ottavino. He’s clearly got the goods and just needs time to put it together.

Surprising outing from kulik. Has to be his best of the year.

I continue to look for good things from the Ryde.

  6. Kilgore says:

Double D or D-Cal are the only ones that I can come up with and looks like Jess moved up a spot on the reliever depth chart, sweet. Also, will see if I can find out if Jess’ name really is on the list that might be the ptbnl, if you are on the list wouldn’t they tell the player or do they usually keep that within the front office?

  7. sluhser says:

How about “D Calamity” for Descalo. or “D sisaster’” for Descalo. Think I like “D Calamity” the best.

  8. Casey says:

Does anyone have an answer for this: Have we given up on Anderson as a catching prospect? Seems like Pagnozzi is the everyday catcher and Anderson plays maybe twicw a week.

  9. cariocacardinal says:

    You Da’Dan Descalso?

    Danny Danger?

    Ok, i’ll stop now.

  10. cariocacardinal says:

Why do you say Parise doesn’t project to the majors? just because he hasn’t gotten the pub? It sounds like his sinker is improving and he’s developing a change up. If he has really only been pitching for 3 years and he is already in AAA I certainly wouldn’t write him off yet.

    • azruavatar says:

Relievers are a dime a dozen. Even if he turns into the next Brad Thompson 1) any predictions on that are really guesses when the player is that fringy and 2) when you’re talking about the last guy on the bench, there just isn’t much value there.

His GB rates are up and his strikeout rates are good (but not great). This just isn’t a guy that I’m likely to project to the majors. Too many questions.

  11. Bob says:

Nice to see Wallace adjusting to AAA, and very nice to see Castillo pile up some strikeouts–a moment of silence for Castillo surrendering his first homer of year, however. (I really hope the teen isn’t a PTNL possibility–that would tip the trade into the “mistake” category for me.)

How long before we have to talk about DD as a future star, rather than a plausible MLB regular? He’s playing knockout defense (exactly one DP turned per game, which is unheardof), hitting for high average with a .200 iso. slg., and showing superb contact ability/command of the strikezone. All while age-appropriate for double-A. Lefties & righties, home & road, the guy is hitting everyone, everywhere.

I couldn’t agree more about moving Ott to the ‘pen, Grant. He’s had plenty of time to “figure out” how to pitch as a starter. I say let Adam come in for 1-2 innings and just pump that fastball…which *could* gain a couple ticks with the switch to relief.

  12. Edwin says:

    the nickname is “the barefoot”!!!!!!!!!

  13. Easy says:

Descalso Dan’s no also ran. Ugh…

  14. Alex says:

According to the box score at milb.com, Fornataro had 12 ground outs to only 2 fly outs. Seems promising

  15. IL and StL Fan says:

Wallace is on a 12-game hitting streak. Only 2 walks and 2 RBI in that period, though….

Overall, it sure seems that DeRossa is poor return for Perez+ Age and contract situation = a grab for short term success.

  16. Mike says:

Per mlbtraderumors.com, Todd and Samuel are on the short list of PTBNLs…Gammons referred the the PTBNL as a “prized prospect” today on ESPN.

    Gulp.

  17. Redbird says:

The prized prospect is Matt Arburr

  18. dave barry says:

Dan descalso is a dead ringer for corporal klinger. I’ve met him in person and he’ll always be klinger to me.

  19. Matt says:

Redbird, are you getting your info from somewhere or are you just an ardent Arburr enthusiast?

  20. VolsnCards5 says:

yea all this talk of prized prospect as the PTBNL scares the bejeezus out of me…would not surprise if it was a player out of our newfound MI depth(delasco would make me angry)

so does this effectively end the holliday trade talk?

  21. Redbird says:

    Matt,

The Matt Arburr comment was a joke. Unless Clevland is looking for 6-4 260 pd guys that strike out 1 every 3 plate apperances or more thier entire minor league career so far. LOL, I like Matt Arburr’s size but that doesn’t mean anything until he learns to strike less.

  22. Mike says:

    Dan Da Scalpel…

  23. Alex says:

‘Dan Descalso’ is an anagram for ‘second salad’

    Sorry, best I could do.

  24. RunSup says:

The nickname for Descalso is “Dom”.

    “Dom Descalso”

The name given to him on the day he was drafted. Just ask Pickle, Few and Uncle Buck. Descalso was originally dubbed “Dom” by an incredulous Pickle as a tongue-in-cheek “who the heck is that…?” statement. If memory serves, we were looking for the big third-baseman in that draft and all we got was “Dom”. (His scouting report screamed second base.)

We used the name in conversations over on CT the rest of 2007 and into 2008.
Now that he is hitting and proving us nay-sayers wrong, “Dom” fits even better.

He and Lunhow can shove it back in our faces. Just field the position and hit! Dang-nam-it.

  25. gobirds says:

I’ve been trying to push Double D’s for awhile, but i guess it’s never going to stick.

    Sigh.
