Quad Cities decides they hate me with a double header today. Batavia shows some love with a postponed game. (It could all be weather related too but the planets rotating around me beg to differ.)

The system goes 3-for-6 and bids a fond farewell to Chris Perez as it waits for the second shoe to fall.

[Update AZ: cardsfan1 chiming in that Mortensen got called up last night.  Likely related to the Khalil DL.  I'm very excited about this actually.  I want to see how his stuff plays in front of the big boys.  Also, this is one pitcher that I WANT to spend time with Dave Duncan. Crazy, I know.]

Memphis 10, New Orleans 9

  • Mark Hamilton was 4-for-5 with a double.
  • Jon Jay went yard in a bid to not be the PTBNL.
  • The Redbirds had 5 doubles and a HR among their 12 hits.
  • Mitchell Boggs pitched just 3 innings allowing 4 runs on 3 hits and a HBP.
  • Charlie Manning did him not favors allowing all 3 inherited runners to score and 4 of his own runs to cross the plate in 2 innings.
  • Pete Parise, masquerading as Mike Parisi temporarily in the boxscore (no seriously, MiLB had it screwed up for a while), struck out 4 in 2 innings of work. Good to see him back from TJ surgery.
  • Jess Todd, The Destroyer, struck out 1 in 2 innings of work.

Springfield 4, Tulsa 6

  • Tyler Henley went 3-for-4 with a HR. Henley now has an OPS over .900.
  • Pete Kozma was 0-for-4 with his 14th Springfield error.
  • Lance Lynn struck out 4 in 6 innings of work. He allowed 7 hits and 3 ER. The sinker was working with 9 groundouts against 4 air outs.

Palm Beach 4, Brevard County Drunken Manatees 7

  • Aaron Luna was 1-for-2 with a HR and a walk.
  • Tommy Pham went 2-for-4 with a double and a HR. Pham’s just 21 but the door seems to be closing on his opportunity to continue with a .620 OPS this year.
  • Nick Addition tossed 5 innings allowing 6 hits and walking 3. He struck out 1 and allowed 2 runs.
  • Casey Mulligan allowed 2 hits and 2 walks for 3 unearned runs.

Quad Cities 10, Kane County 2 (Game 1: 7 innings)

  • Paul Cruz, playing LF, went 3-for-4 with a double and a walk.
  • Charles Cutler was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Jason Stidham, continuing his hot start after his draft, went 3-for-4.
  • Hector Cardenas allowed 2 runs (1 earned) over 5 innings. He struck out 4, walked 3 and allowed 4 hits.
  • Scott McGregor struck out 1 in 2 perfect innings.

Quad Cities 2, Kane County 8 (Game 2: 7 innings)

  • Jon Edwards went 1-for-3 converting a ball into a HR. (Converting was used intentionally. It’s a play on words. Do you get it? Like Jonathan Edwards and people but Jon and with baseballs. Yes, I am that good.)
  • Frederick Parejo was 2-for-3.
  • Arquimedes got lit up. Nieto allowed 5 ER over 3 innings.
  • The parade of relievers began with 4 relievers needed to finish off the last 4 innings. Miguel Chinese-Tapia and Adam Veres both pitched scoreless frames.

Johnson City 4, Burlington 0

  • Luis Mateo was 2-for-4 with a double at 2B.
  • Edgar Lara was 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
  • Travis Tartamella, C, was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Reynier Gonzales struck out 4 and walked 1 over 5 innings. He allowed 4 hits for an even WHIP of 1.
  • Andrew Moss struck out 4 in 3 innings. He allowed 2 hits and a walk for an even WHIP of 1.
  • WHIP is not a very useful statistic.

Jason Stidham is off to a great start to his pro career. QC definitely needed another bat in the lineup. The Cardinals are putting together a nice group of 2B prospects now.

Quick VSL Update: Cards beat the Mets 5-0, allowing only 1 hit. Starter Carlos Oraa threw 6 perfect innings with 7 strikeouts. He’s off to a tremendous start to the season, albeit in the VSL. I imagine we’ll be seeing this guy in the states next year, probably at JC.

  2. Redbird says:

Mike Parisi! Glad he’s back! The guy has a great curve ball just needed to be more consistent at the big league level last year.

The org must be really impressed with Stidham to start him out at Quad Cities. So far he’s hit in the two games he’s been there.

Lance Lynn had a decent game. Lets hope he’s not on the list. I think giving Clevland Chris Perez was quit generous enough

  3. Redbird says:

    Forgot!

What has got into Mark Hamilton?

  4. Matt says:

I quite like WHIP as a basic statistic. Usually if your WHIP is around one you had a good outing, since triples and homers aren’t all that common.

  5. Memphis25 says:

99.9% sure Pete Parise was pitching even though the box score says Mike Parisi, His first Triple-A series is a homecoming for Mark Hamilton who played at Tulane University.

  6. cardsfan1 says:

Mortenson got called up last night.

  7. sluhser says:

Could one of the ADMINs put the radio player after the jump so it doesn’t start every time we come to the home page?

  8. sluhser says:

    Thank you kindly.

On Mortenson: I wonder if he’s up to start or relieve. Would love to see him get at least a chance to start in Wellemeyer’s stead.

  9. Mookie says:

Any legs to the Mortensen rumor?

  10. Jeff Roman says:

I’m stoked to see how Mort’s stuff plays in the Majors as well.

  11. myersli says:

Ditto to sluhser. I would love to see Mortensen called up to start.

  12. VolsnCards5 says:

    yea…boxscore says pete parise now

  13. jjray says:

Wonder if they are calling up a starter to Memphis to take Mort’s rotation spot. Lance Lynn?

  14. Redbird says:

Regards to Mike Parisi… that would have been the fastest rehab from TJ surgery that I’ve ever heard of.

Lance Lynn will be promoted to AAA to replace Mort.

  15. Jeffery says:

Trey Hearne is Pitcher of the Week in the Texas League. I look for him to move up if a move is made.

  16. Redbird says:

I was at the ballpark early yesterday watching PB and overheard Dewitt & Mo discusing the PTBNL names. I overheard 10 names and wrote them down.

Heres the list that I heard:

    1. Curt Smith
    2. Scott Gorgen
    3. Richard Castillo
    4. Shaun Garceau
    5. Francisco Samuel
    6. Matt Arburr
    7. Peter Kozma
    8. Tyler Henley
    9. Daryl Jones
    10. Mark Hamilton

  17. PJ says:

There is no way that they would be handing Daryl Jones away as a PTBNL—Sorry

  18. Redbird says:

I also thought I heard some other names but wasn’t sure I was hearing wishful thinking?

    Jarrett Hoffpauir
    Casey Rowlett
    Nick Stavinoha
    Matt Pagnozzi
    Matthew Scherer

  19. Redbird says:

Just a side note I heard them laughing when the were talking about Matt Scherer…lol. Something about a 6-5 260 guy throwing a 85 mph fb.

  20. sluhser says:

    Kevin Goldstein on Mark Hamilton:

    Sleeper alert!

Mark Hamilton, 1B, Cardinals (Triple-A Memphis)
    Sunday’s stats: 4-for-5, 2B, 2 R, RBI
A second-round pick in 2006 out of Tulane, the biggest problem with Hamilton’s development has been an inability to stay healthy. A classic big, strong, slow left-handed first baseman, Hamilton was having a career-saving year at Double-A, batting .307/.421/.521 in 48 Texas League games, and now he’s continued to rake after a promotion to the Pacific Coast League. As a first base prospect, he’s as blocked as any prospect could possibly be, but that doesn’t mean he’s not worth noting.

  21. Redbird says:

    Slusher thats great!

Mark Hamilton is on the PTBNL list maybe Clevlend will take him.

  22. jack618 says:

redbird, you’re not doing anyone any good posting false info or your opinions as facts.

  23. RedC says:

Redbird seems like a less trade-focused version of “Joelcards,” who has already been banned at no less than three other websites of which I am aware. Same run-on sentences and goofiness.

  24. arch support says:

Yeah, the pseudo-troll act was old a month ago.

  25. TJ Gila says:

I just hope the Mortenson callup isn’t a repeat of the Todd callup. If he’s just being used to support innings behind Thompson tonight and then going right back to Memphis, it’s being shortsighted. They’re just adding to the already impending 40 man crunch. Walters went down on the 18th (so i think that clears the 10 day rule) and hasn’t pitched in at least three days, so he should be available tonight. If they’re bringing up Mortenson with the goal of him staying and contributing then I’m all for it.

  26. Easy says:

Redbird’s nonsense not withstanding the PTBNL list is worrisome. If Todd and Samuel are indeed on the list then we can assume that the other players are of that caliber. We have a glut of right handed relievers with high ceiling potential but not of starters or position players. If guys like Descalso, Kozma and Lynn are on the list it is unlikely that Cleveland will take another reliever. Losing one of those guys along with Perez would really hurt.

  27. Cardnerds says:

How many players do we have on our 40-man roster now? Are there anymore openings.

    • azruavatar says:

The more I look at the 40-man roster the less I am concerned about it. With players like Ankiel, Greene, Wellemeyer, etc leaving via free agency and marginal players like Stavinoha, Robinson, Hawksworth, Barden, etc that can simply be waived, I think you can free up a lot of space.

  28. Shanky says:

Again, color me excited about Jason Stidham. With Descalso and now Stidham, we appear to have some legitimate 2B candidates on the horizon who can handle the stick.

  29. VolsnCards5 says:

ummm…so redbird completely made that list up, right?

not very good at parsing out sarcasm on websites

  30. Merry CRasmus says:

Do you think DeWitt and Mo have conversations like that in the midst of fans? I would think they would be pretty protective of this, for obvious reasons. They don’t want the press to know, so I doubt they talk about it around fans watching BP. From 50,000 feet, it looks like Redbird’s displeasure with this deal is bordering on the unhealthy.

That being said, I am concerned about some of the rumors about who is on this list. I like the trade for the short term a great deal, but if you are giving a top 10 prospect with Perez you’re giving up a lot of long term value. Usually these PTBNL are not as big of a name as we fear. Hopefully that trend continues.

  31. PJ says:

As much as I would hate to lose Samuel or Todd, I don’t see it being a huge deal. That is the strength of our system. Losing Descalsco, Jones, Hamilton would hurt much much worse. Or Lance Lynn. I don’t think Todd or Samuel are dime a dozen guys, but we have drafted replacements as recently as this year.

  32. Michael says:

I’m curious why a GM would ever include a PTBNL. It seems like you leave yourself vulnerable. What’s the advantage?

  33. Zach says:

I can’t believe they would include Todd on that list. Perez + Todd would be giving up quite a bit for a half a season rental, even if I liked the deal presently. I’ve also heard Sanchez may be on the list, he seems to have improved his prospect status incredibly this season. I would be okay with Samuel being the guy – he throws gas but needs better control…hmm…sounds familiar.

  34. Suzola says:

Please not Sanchez. I’ll be very disappointed.

  35. John says:

I thought Mortensen was supposed to have at least a fastball that could touch 90.

  36. RunSup says:

Stop sweating the PTBNL. Its worrying about nothing.

If its anymore than one of the glut of 1B/OF or the glut of college 4th/5th OF’ers or the glut of college middle relievers, I’ll eat my hat.

Its not going to be a significant prospect. Shapiro is blowing wind.

You’re comments are becoming increasingly ridiculous which gets you increasingly close to being censored.

    My reply:
Azruatar? I’m not sure what the deal is here? None of my remarks are offensive, rude, or vulgar. They are merely speculative, what I read in the papers, my opinion, and simply stating the stats.

Please advise me of the rules for comments? It appears that most of the comments on here are speculative, opinion based, and stat line based?

If you want to censor me for stating my opinions I guess thats your? I’m not the expect that you are or on your level.

    • erik says:

dude, you have been banned. stop trying to circumvent the system and find somewhere else for your weird ramblings. Any further comments you make here will be deleted.

    • erik says:

and we can ban whoever we want to ban. this is our website. we can censor idiocy if well darn well please.

  38. poor_college_guy says:

    Redbird,
i think the problem was in your list of names. making some crap up about overhearing a conversation between dewiitt and mo is not necessary. if you want to spout off some names as speculation then that is fine i think, but trying to legitimize it by making up a story is unnecessary.

  39. arch support says:

I would say a bit more than poor_college_guy: Redbird has been annoying for as long as I remember him posting here. Seeing his/her name in the comments section has elicited groans from me for a while.

Good to hear it’s not something to worry about anymore.

  40. Gruntosaurus says:

In related PTBNL news, I see that Luke Gregerson continues to pitch effectively for San Diego — more so than the guys who have come up from Memphis to pitch in Busch. Laying aside the fact that Khalil Greene has fizzled (to put it mildly), I don’t recall too many complaints here about Gregerson being the PTBNL in that deal, and I can imagine any number of comparable guys who could be in this one.

That said, a very interesting question is: how and why is he succeeding there, when theoretically more promising pitchers are NOT succeeding on promotion to St. Louis? Yes, I know that San Diego is a pitcher’s park, but that can’t explain all of the difference between Gregerson’s results and those of Walters, Mort, Todd, etc.
