Lots of games to cover today even as Memphis was rained out. Let’s rock.
Memphis, New Orleans – Postponed
- Brian Broderick was touched for 3 runs over 6 innings.
- Bradley Furnish gave up 3 runs in 1 inning.
- Eddie Degerman finished up the game, walking 2 and striking out 1.
- Peter Kozma went 2-4 with 2 singles.

- Matt Arburr had the only other hit, but left the field with dizziness. Hope he’s ok. UPDATE: Matt Baker of the Springfield News-Leader says he is ok.)
- Scott Gorgen started for the Cardinals and did not have his typical command walking 6 in 5 innings. But he must have had that Blake King type movement as he struck out 7 as well. He gave up 5 runs total – 4 earned.
- Tom Eager gave up 4 runs of his own in 2 innings by allowing 4 hits and 2 walks.
- Jason Buuuuuursma had the only clean line with 1 shutout inning.

- Adron Chambers went 2-4 with a double and a walk and a stolen base.

- Chris Swauger had a pinch-hit HR in the 9th, but too little too late.

Matt Arburr is just dehydrated. He’ll be fine. http://www.news-leader.com/article/20090629/BLOGS01/90629052/Arburr+leaves+game+early+at+Tulsa
Another good outing by Hooker. If he keeps pitching like this, he’ll be back up at QC before long.
Good start for Robert Stock so far. I’m kind of anxious to see how the rest of his season unfolds.
I like the Avril Lavigne reference. Quality.
Furnish looks finished. His ERA is now over 8. Another second round pitching choice wasted. This organization simply can’t draft or develop quality starters.
Looks like Niko can’t hit on this level either. Wasn’t sure what to think about the Stock pick and probably won’t for atleast a few years but he is off to a good start. I guess the feel good vibe of Jackson’s debut has vanished since now he is hitting .167, with an avg like that it doesn’t matter how good the glove is.
Virgil Hill did sign right? Where was he placed?
Weird to see the word “rallied”.
I couldn’t figure out what word to use there are rallied was the only word that came out of my brain.
On another note: I still can’t figure out what to use besides “rallied”.
A little off topic since Memphis didn’t play but if Hoffpauir playing his way to prospect status again. He has 9 HRs, more walks than Ks, and just over 30% of his hits go for extra bases. What is his current prospect status? Is he the only reason Descalo is still in Springfield?
Hoffpauir isn’t going to slow Descalso’s progression. DD will be in Memphis within the month I’d bet. What role they’ll each play there is debateable. The Cardinals don’t seem interested in Hoffpauir or Barden as major league players (and I think they’re probably right) so I’d expect DD to be the starting 2B next year at Memphis with Barden and Hoffpauir gone or perhaps as a utility player.
I wouldn’t be shocked to see Hoffpauir taken in a Rule 5 draft.
Well Stock has started off OK…not a complete failure or rousing success. I am worried about this gray “OK” area. This kid will need to turn it up a notch or completely fail. We want to take the decision away from the Front Office, because currently everything they do makes me scratch my head.
so i guess redbird got banned? figured he would have made another list by now
gonna miss trying to figure out what he was talking about
WCBW comments at other sites.
There’s a minimum level of sanity required for comments and he had breached that threshold. None of us likes to make that decision but it detracts from the other comments and spreads a lot of rumors in a hurry.
Proposal: that future DFRs approach the jump with the words “Let’s rock.”
That was awesome.
[devil's horns]
two hands of devil’s horns or one?
It’s ridiculous to me that we have Ryan Jackson and Nico both at Batavia with no decent shortstops at QC. It’d be nice if one of them could get their average above the Mendoza line though…
niko vasquez’s inability to hit this season is the most dissapointing about the farm system this season…i really thought we had something there
So, if the Cards end up signing Jacob Beltre (as Erik RT’d) and Shelby Miller after signing Mateo, does that mean Christmas comes early for Future Redbirds fans?
awww man….I’m gonna miss hearing about what a huge star Mark Shorey is gonna be. Thanks to the FR staff :)
@prideofpeoria – Virgil Hill did sign, and he’s playing for the Gulf Coast League team right now.
The more I see of Wallace the more I know that he is my number one prospect. Don’t get me wrong I like DJTools, but he doesn’t bring the same level of pop as Wallace does.
Myersli, who is Jacob Beltre? Thanks.
Jacob Beltre is the 6’5″ catcher prospect out of the DR that has been linked to the Cards today.
He’s the second best catcher in LA this year, but may not stick there because of his size.
Thanks for the info. I did subsequently find at BB America that he was a July 2nd prospect from the Dominican, but did not see that he was a catcher. The BB America article had him most likely to sign elsewhere and did not mention the Cards. Can you indicate where the Cards interest was written? Thanks again.
Got it. I was reading older through newer on the posts and did not previously see the link in the 6-30 DFR. Thanks.
