So it’s officially official in all of it’s official-ness. Wagner Mateo is a St. Louis Cardinal. Big surprise. It’s like opening your Christmas presents early. The bonus amount is believed to be $3.1M, which in this economy is really something. The bonus breaks several records.
- It is the largest bonus given to a Dominican position player. The biggest bonus to a Dominican player was given to RHP Michel Inoa last year by the A’s, at $4.25M
- It’s a record bonus by the Cardinals given to a Latin American signee. The previous record was set last year when the Cardinals signed 3B Roberto de la Cruz.
- It’s the biggest bonus given to an amateur by the Cardinals. J.D. Drew received a $3M bonus when he was drafted.
Some front office reaction:
“Wagner is the top player available in Latin America this year and we have scouted him heavily over the past two years,” stated Cardinals’ Director of International Operations Moises Rodriguez. “His bat is special and we look forward to his continued development as a professional.”
So what about Wagner Mateo as a ballplayer? Some of you may have heard him compared to five-tool talents like Carlos Beltran or Grady Sizemore. Reading after Ben Badler and Jorge Arangure, all that seems like more hype than substance. Don’t get me wrong, Mateo is an elite talent. But he’s not a five-tool talent. He has the all important tool, and that is the ability to hit the baseball. Merely based on what I’ve read, Mateo’s OFP (overall future potential) sounds like it would be graded as such on the 20-80 scouting scale:
Hit: 60, maybe better.
Power: 55, 60 potential. More of a line-drive swing now, but definite power is shown in batting practice.
Run: 40. He’s got a mature body already at 6-1, 190.
Throwing: Not sure, but most scouts think he’s destined for left-field rather than right, so I’d imagine average at best.
Fielding: Again, not sure but you have to think at best average given his speed, although we know there is more to outfield defense than speed.
Putting it all together, you have an left-fielder that could hit around .300 and could have double-digit home-run totals, with some 20-25 homer potential on the high end. Of course, we’re talking about a 16-year old, so that would be one of the best possible outcomes. It’s hard to say for sure what the Cardinals will get, and we’re talking about someone who is a long ways away from making an impact.
Here again are the videos, for your perusal so you can judge for yourself:
This is a red-letter day for Cardinal fans. We won’t really hear much more on Mateo until next year, when the next GCL season starts.
I’ll be talking tomorrow to Ben Badler regarding Mateo and the July 2 signing on BlogTalkRadio. The show will be at 2pm Central, be sure to tune in for more.

I love the way the ball sounds coming off his bat…
I’m excited and everything, but that guy looks hilarious running around the bases.
The Front Office was so excited, they said the same thing twice!
Again, I like the kids swing, especially his lower half.
You have editing privileges, and instead of fixing it, you mock me in the comments! Where is your soul, HL? Your day is coming. One of these days you’re gonna be walking around with your fly open, and no one will tell you.
I’ve been walking around the last 17 years wearing a Members Only jacket.
My day has already come.
Plus, It’s not like you completely forgot to do Johnson City in a DFR or anything!
I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t extremely excited about this pick-up but I also know that many of these players don’t pan out. If he’s not a Beltran or Sizemore whose tools do his compare to?
Just curious, anybody know where Miguel Sano ended up signing? I know it’s total wishful thinking that the cards might get both, Sano and Mateo. Add Miller to that, and you’d have a heart attack causing trifecta.
He hasn’t signed yet, but the Cardinals are not in the running for Sano.
“Putting it all together, you have an left-fielder that should hit around .300 and should have double-digit home-run totals, with some 20-25 homer potential on the high end.”
So, in light of that, would Andre Either be a good comparison? Or perhaps David DeJesus with more pop?
I like the Ethier comp, although I hope he’s a better field than that.
I’m just making this up, but it sounds to me like he could be a Vlad Guerrero type offensive player but in left field instead of right field (I assume his arm is bad if we’re not hearing much about it). Obviously that’s a pretty high ceiling/low probability type outcome.
He looks like a left-handed Juan Encarnacion
Those projections sound slightly Shin Soo Choo-ish.
my question is how long before he starts to play for the Cards minor league teams??? Then when is ETA for the big show???
Just a silly hypothetical but how much money would Bryce Harper Bring in if he were eligible for July 2 signing? I think he would top whatever Sano ends up getting.
lefthanded Encarnacion? oh please, no. NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
The thing that ticks me off is that Strauss or someone is going to use this signing as a sign that the team isn’t dedicated to winning now–just another Faberge Egg or something. He will never make up for the loss of Aaron Miles…
Erik, I finally got a chance to listen to the first blog talk radio, thanks for doing these,
looking forward to the next one. Nice job by everyone.
Grabiel Hernandez celebrated his July 2nd anniversary by hitting for the cycle today going 4-for-4 with a BB.
Grabiel is definitely on my watch list.
Rumor has it he is a ++ defender, so any offense at SS is good.
Erik and matt baker are tweeting that d descalso has been promoted to aaa.
does anyone else see a left handed Alfonso Soriano in him. He doesnt crouch like Soriano but he loads up on his back foot like he does.
Grabiel Hernandez seems to be quietly having a huge season.
I know the DSL stats are near meaningless, but it’s still good to see that someone with his athleticism isn’t obviously a poor hitter.
I like the fact he is swinging with a wooden bat at this age.

This guy already looks good. Runs the bases just like Albert Pujols but serious skill for a 16 yr old kid. Drove the ball very nicely to all fields.
