Daniel Descalso has been promoted to Memphis. May his stay there be shorter than J-Ho’s was.
With International Signing Day coming to a close (which really means nothing) it is fair to point out that MLB is the only major sport that allows the rich teams to continue to ‘buy’ young talent by not forcing these kids into the overall draft. Maybe it is a case of wanting to keep it ‘America’s Pastime’ by allotting the entire draft for players of American colleges, JuCos and high schools or maybe it is just another part of a sport that doesn’t have a salary cap. I’m not coming down on it one way or the other but it is interesting to think: Would these players be getting as much money as they do now if they were forced into the draft? If not, would smaller market teams take a bigger risk on acquiring some of them without fear of it eating up their entire budget for the area?
On to the DFR where the Roman Candles weren’t the only fireworks at the ballparks!
- Nick Stavinoha might actually be a better option than Rick Ankiel. Think about that. Stavinoha went deep for his 9th HR of the year.
- The Redbirds had the tying run on first in the 9th with no outs, but Brendan Yarbough (who went 2-for-3) hit into a fielder’s choice to push across Brian Barden and two batters later, it was for naught.
- Evan MacLane continues to rock as a Redbird, going 6 innings scattering 8 hits for 3 unearned runs off a Brett Wallace error. He struck out 2 and walked 1.
- Matthew Scherer was perfect in his inning pitched and Jess Todd gave up 3 hits but no runs in his inning.
- Tyler Henley, Pete Kozma and James Rapoport all hit doubles. Kozmanian Devil picked up an RBI.
- Daniel Descalso went big fly, driving in 2.
- Daryl Jones left the game early, perhaps still battling his injury.
- Kyle Lohse started. He gave up 2 ERs and walked 4 in 4.2 innings.
- Brandon Dickson took the loss, though. He pitched 4.2 innings as well, giving up only 1 ER (2 total) and striking out an exemplarily 9 batters!
- Tyler Norrick came in for the last 2 outs of the 10th inning and allowed Dickson’s inherited runner to score. He struck out a batter.
- Curt Smith (HR, 3 RBI), Francisco Rivera (2 RBI), Domnit Bolivar (double, 1 RBI) and Jermaine Curtis (double) all went 2-for-4.
- Colt Sedbrook hit a homerun and drove in 3. He also stole a base.
- Richard Castillo was solid over 6 innings. Even though he walked 3 and gave up 3 ERs, he held the hits to 5 and struck out 4.
- Jorge Rondon got 1 out, gave up 3 hits and an earned run.
- The bad Blake King showed up in his 1.1 innings. He walked 3 and struck out 3, but gave up 2 ERs on only 1 hit.
- Casey Mulligan was perfect…for 1 out.
- Adam Reifer got the save, also being perfect but striking out 1.
Quad Cities 0, Burlington Coat Factory 3
- Alex Castellanos was 2-for-4 with a triple.
- Matt Carpenter was 3-for-4 with a triple.
- Jarred Bogany was 1-for-4.
- Everyone else? Not so much.
- Kevin Thomas was the loser, going 6 innings of 3 run ball. He struck out 2 and walked 2, giving up 6 hits (one of which was a HR). All 3 of those runs came on that homerun. Not a bad performance.
- Matthew Frevert gave up a hit and a walk in 1.2 innings, striking out 2.
- Scott McGregor struck out 1 in 1.1 innings.
- D’Marcus Ingram and Alan Ahmady were 2-for-4. Ahmady had a double and Ingram had a triple and 3 RBI.
- Guillermo Toribio was 1-for-2 with a double, a RBI and a walk.
- Nico Vasquez is hitting .105. He actually has struggled worse since moving down a level.
- Daniel Calhoun went 4 innings. He gave up 6 hits and 1 ER, striking out 2.
- Andres Rosales snipped the win. Batavia scored all 8 runs in the first inning and Calhoun didn’t stick around long enough for the decision. Rosales pitching 2 scoreless innings, striking out 3, walking 1 and giving up 2 hits.
- Daniel Richardson had an eventful 9th inning, walking 3 and giving up a hit. He struck out 2 and managed only to give up 1 run.
- Christian Beatty hit a HR, going 2-for-4.
- Robert Stock made it half way to the cycle with a HR and a double, picking up 2 RBI. Where his triple and single went is an Unsolved Mystery! Oh, Stock.
- Richard Racobaldo hit 3 singles in 4 at-bats.
- Randy Santos pitched 5 innings, giving up 2 ERs on 4 hits. He walked 2 and struck out 3.
- John Durham also gave up 2 ERs on 5 hits, though and in only 2 innings. He walked none and struck out 2.
- Aaron Terry picked up the win, giving a scoreless inning that featured 2 walks and a strikeout.
- David Kingston got the save with a scoreless inning, walking 1.
It’s a good thing we scored some runs in the system. I was beginning to think I was going to have to put up hit totals just so my 0 button wouldn’t wear out.

color me concerned on Vazquez … this is getting troubling after last year.
I appreciate the Robert Stack reference.
Re: the international draft, the worry people bring up sometimes is the perceived hemorrhaging of Puerto Rican talent after it was subjected to the draft. I don’t know how that would change, but it’s something worth considering.
Hmm, has anyone made a Rocco Baldelli reference yet for Richard Racobaldo? If not, consider this my contribution to humanity.
Hey Guys-
Love this site! Was wondering if someone could list the velocity of our hardest throwers in the minors. Maybe even break down which throw in the 3 categories:upper, mid and low 90′s.
thanks!
Casey
I’d say Eduardo Sanchez and Fransisco Samuel are the two hardest throwers in the system – both sit in the upper-90′s with their fastball. The difference between the two is that Sanchez at least has an idea where his is going… Samuel Doesn’t.
^ jumps off the Niko bandwagon and waves goodbye.
Don’t care how young he is, he’s been atrocious since leaving Johnson City last season. Call me when he goes all Daryl Jones and figures things out.
Sanchez and Samuel are probably at/near the top of the organization in terms of velocity. And Ottavino has to be in the discussion – if he was a reliever his average fastball velocity would probably be right up there with those guys.
And don’t forget Adam Reifer.
joe kelly hasn’t thrown a pitch yet, but he has also been clocked as high as 99 in the past
Is Donovan Solano a legitimate prospect?
solano hits singles and can play defense. no power or patience to speak of at all, but he’s only 21 and already up at AAA, so that’s something. upside is utility infielder w/flashy glove.
Is Stavinoha really an option at all?
I’ve only seen him at the MLB level, and he looked over-matched. Three walks (one was IBB) in 127 PAs, poor defense, and endless string of bad ABs with a bad approach. He’s already 27 and his OBP has been horrible even in the minors. I admit, that isn’t much different than Ankiel most days this year…..but Ankiel has hit better in MLB in 2007-8 than Stav hits in AAA.
Forgive me if I miss the sarcasm (am new to this site and don’t know if there are running jokes related to these issues), are people really upset that the Cardinals let Aaron Miles go? That’s just silly. It was a bonus (to me) that the idiotic Cubs signed him for 2 years. I was glad they waived Kennedy, I was glad they let Eckstein go. I rooted for the guys, but I want the Cards to be good, so these seemed like easy decisions to me.
Aaron Miles endeared himself to the Cardinals fans that put Grit and Hustle in their morning joe. The other half loathed him.
Stavinoha played much better this year with the big club than he did last year. I would much rather have him on the major league roster than Joe Thurston.
Who is going to replace DD in Springfield?
To be clear, I didn’t loathe any of these guys….they just didn’t actually help win games.
I’ve read the stories about Miles when he was almost murdered while in the minors, he’s definitely the kind of guy you root for….you just don’t want him to….you know…be on team you root for. Of all the middle IF guys they let go, Grudz was the guy I wish they had kept around for another year or 2.
Skips defense is coming around, he looks much better than he did in April.
I hope descalso plays tonight becasue I am going to the game.
I hope descalo plays in at the AAA game tonight because I am going to be there.
I can’t help but think that if Robert Stock keeps hitting then he will get moved quickly and concidering his past I really don’t think that is a good idea. Kozoma’s progression thorugh the minors seems more fitting. I’m worried that if he is rushed then we will lose out on a good catcher and end up with another rhp.
Descalso will be added to Memphis’ roster tomorrow when the Redbirds get home. He and his dad are driving to Memphis today.
I cracked an Aaron Miles joke yesterday…am I missing today’s?
Ha. No, that was you. I read the newer comments on the last couple posts and couldn’t remember where the Miles comments was.
I’m from StL, but live in CT now…. so I am not exposed to a lot of the local media/back lash you get in StL. My sister was livid over Eckstein, just as mad about Miles….and when I’m visiting the family, I realize that she’s not the only one that feels that way. So, it’s always hard to tell if someone is being funny or serious with comments like that.
I’m excited to see how Shane Peterson does with his promotion.
Hl raises a good question; what is up with maclane? I have kept thinking of him as a non-prospect, somebody with an upside of spot appearance as a left-handed innings eater. But his fip is among the best of the starters on the staff – and it wasn’t appalling at reno, even though his traditional stats were.
He’s now got 80+ innings at memphis. Does anybody think it’s time to reevaluate?
scout.com reporting that DJ tools also on his way to memphis…they grow up so…ummm…slow then fast?
springfieldcardinals.com shows Jones on 7 day DL, not going to memphis. He left the game last night with a quad problem
yea i just realized my mistake…sorry for the false infor…thats what you get for skimming articles
Who is J-Ho? I come here to be informed, not confused.
I can imagine how confusing it must have been to think of what possible MIF’er from Memphis with J and Ho in his name I was referencing.
Its that attitude that has taken a lot of the editorializing out of the DFRs.
Sounds more like you came to complain.
^J-Ho is Jarrett Hoffpauir
editorialize all you’d like!
Whether I should have or not, I honestly did not know who J-Ho was and you cannot tell me that ALL who pass this way do. This is a good site and I enjoy it and editorializing is fine as long as the editor doesn’t try to get too cute.
And criticism is welcome as long as the poster doesn’t try to get too snide.
The FR site has a full refund policy for those confused by the postings. please see the cashier to get your money back.
tom s., thanks for being so understanding. What is your understanding on whether WK could help our current lineup?
HL, I don’t mean to be snide. Any writer ought to want to be understood and trying to be cutting edge or “cool” doesn’t always accomplish that.
Yes, you did mean to be snide.
If you wanted to know the answer, you would have just asked the question. You wanted to make it known you didn’t like the style of writing I provided with your own editorial comment.
That’s your opinion and you are welcome to it and welcome to express it, just like I’m welcome to express my opinion that your backhanded comments thrown in at the end of your posts aren’t fooling anyone.
So you don’t want to maximize the understanding of your readers when you post?
No, I don’t want to maximize the understanding of my readers. Hence why I don’t provide the ‘Press Numero Dos en espanol’ feature on my DFRs.
Some stragglers get left behind, fact of life.
Preach on, HL.
You do the work of gathering all this data. Present it how you like.
If readers don’t like it, they can scram. It’s not like they’re paying a subscription.
Personally, I’d like to see all the DFR authors’ opinions on players. If comment criticism has curbed that to any degree, I feel cheated.
