Jarrett Hoffpauir has a nice debut for the Cardinals club after heating up over the last month. I’d be surprised if the Cardinals see him as having a long term place with the club given that he’s restricted to 2B exclusively. But for one night at least, he was great with the walk in front of Pujols and the single to go up 6-4. Congrats Jarrett!

I’ll update w/ Memphis in the morning — they’re late in the game out west. Though they are also in plain sight.*

Memphis 3, Albuquerque 4

  • Brett Wallace is not an OCD police detective, but he may just be the future 3B for the St. Louis Cardinals. If Joel Goldberg controlled the meaning behind the word ‘future’, future would be yesterday as the FSMW broadcast highlighted on Thursday. Brett was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Jon Jay was also 2-for-3, with a HR and 2 RBI.
  • Brian Barden isn’t really a SS. He is just a hyper – observant athletic player who plays SS as a front to get access to the lineup. Tonight, he went 2-for-4 with an RBI.
  • Much like Micheal Weston, Mitchell Boggs was ‘burned’ early on in the first season inning.  Behind in the game with no early run support, Boggs spent the next 4 innings (5 total) trying to recover. His final line was 6 hits, 4 ERs, 4 BBs and 4 strikeouts.
  • Pete Parise gave up a hit in his 2 innings and Royce Ring was perfect in his.

Palm Beach 4, Jupiter 1

Quad Cities 4, Burlington 1

  • Charles Cutler was 2-for-4 with a double. He’s hitting .364/.424/.472 this season but his promotion hinges on successfully splitting the atom. Best of luck Charles.
  • Jon Edwards was 1-for-3 with a double.
  • Matt Carpenter was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Hector Cardenas struck out 4 over 7 innings allowing 1 run and 5 hits.
  • David Carpenter picked up his 5th save with a scoreless frame.

Batavia 12, Jamestown 0

Johnson City 1, Bristol 4

  • Luis Mateo was 2-for-4 with a HR.
  • JC scraped together just 4 hits. They failed to walk in the game.
  • Andrew Moss struck out 5 over 4 innings. He allowed 2 hits and 1 walk.
  • Reynier Gonzalez got tagged with the loss with 4 runs (1 earned) over 2.1 innings of work.

Springfield 2, Frisco 1

  • Shane Peterson was 0-for-3 in his first taste of AA.
  • Pete Kozma was 0-for-4. He’s batting .251/.316/.350 in Springfield. I’m still waiting for him to put together a nice hot streak over the course of a week or so. Given his age, the offensive numbers are solid but underwhelming for a hitters’ league.
  • Nick Derba was 1-for-3 with a double.
  • Tony Cruz went yard.
  • Springfield pulled out those 2 runs from 6 hits against the Texas Rangers talented 2007 first rounder, Blake Beavan.
  • Ryan Kulik allowed 2 hits and 2 walks striking out 1 over 7 innings of shutout baseball.
  • Eduardo Sanchez allowed 2 hits and an ER retiring 2 batters.
  • Francisco Samuel struck out 1 while picking up his 19th save in a perfect inning of work.

*USA network = fantastic.

Grabiel Hernandez is now hitting .371/.459/.590 in 105 AB’s for the DSL team.

Very exciting to see Matt Carpenter get out of the gate quickly. I was a fan of the pick at the time, due to his above average athleticism, but wondered about the adjustment period for a guy whose level of competition was a little questionable. So far, he looks to be adjusting just fine, thank you; let’s hope he can keep it up.

I went to the MV Scrappers game tonight vs Williamsport and it’s such a stark contrast in power compared to higher levels. Both teams played their OF defense in REALLY tight, without much fear of the ball going over their heads. A lot of bad contact, poor pitch recognition and bad situational hitting.

The point of all this is that when you see guys flash power and solid OBP like Scruggs and Ryde are doing, you have to realized they are the cream of the crop in leagues like the NYPenn. Of course, they both could be having a hot first month and tail off but if not for anything but their amazingly awesome baseball names I’m excited to see what they can do.

Both are a ripening in age (21 and 22) for short season but as long as both keep playing well, I don’t really care.

baaron- glad to see you’ve noticed Carpenter, as I have too. Very impressive start for him. He seems to be adjusting just fine.

  5. Grant says:

When Curt Smith gets on a hot streak, is he called the Dutch Oven? Just a thought.

Ryan Kulik has allowed only 1 ER over his last 20 IP. Only 6 K over that same stretch, but he seems to have adjusted to AA somewhat, after getting off to a rough start.

Az, I’m with you on Cutler. I’ve been calling for his promotion for like 2 months now. I just don’t see how keeping him at QC is helpful.

  6. Wade says:

Ah … Burn Notice … love it. What’s your thoughts on Royal Pains?

Also, I tweeted with erik about this and it might be a nice idea for a little poll question … Who are you most happy with out of the 2009 draft so far? Carpenter was my pick, but there are some others that are doing well (stidham, stock, smith, scruggs). Maybe I just went with Carpenter because I’m not a fan of the letter ‘s’. And I realize that the sample size is quite small right now.

I thought the issue with cutler was defense? At some point he should work on his d at the next level so that his bat doesn’t stop developing, but I thought that was the rationale.

Is there any motion to fill anderson’s spot since he’s out till spring? Will tony cruz see a promotion? Or will stav pick up the time subbing for pagnozzi?

  8. tnek5 says:

Wallaces double tonight should have been an out. The hit tricked the left fielder into thinking it was going to drop in front of him and then it shot past him. It was still a good hit though, but in the major leagues it would have been an out (unless the left fielder is soriano). Also, I was wondering if you guys were planning on doing a mid-season update on the prospects to see who is excelling and who isn’t.

  9. Alex says:

I have the same thought as Tom – if Cutler’s defense is poor then there is probably a good reason to move him slowly through the system. If they rushed him to a high level next year there would probably be more pressure to start him as 1B/DH so he doesn’t mess with pitching prospects/cost games with his glove. Just a thought.

  10. Easy says:

In answer to Wade’s question I’d go with Stock. With Anderson now a very questionable commodity we need a real catching prospec in the system. Carpenter’s stats are great but I don’t know anything about him. Red Baron, you seem to and I’d appreciate any elaboration.

  11. bookerd says:

Cutler is still in Quad Cities so he can work on his defense, according to an article in the Quad City Times recently.

  12. Mike G. says:

    To Wade:
Both Scruggs and Curt Smith are 2008 draftees. Ross Smith of the 2009 class is off to a .136 start at Johnson City, so I assume you weren’t referring to him.

  13. Mike G. says:

Or were you referring to the pitcher Justin Smith, who has been overpowering in six innings of relief at Johnson City?

  14. JC says:

Is there a good place I can go to see an updated list of what 2009 Cards have signed? The Cards website is lacking in the peeps that didn’t sign right away. Thanks!

  15. ArRedbird says:

JC – try this link for updated 2009 Cardinals’ draft.

    Additions, suggestions are welcomed.

  16. Wade says:

@Mike G. … oops on the Scruggs, it was late, can’t remember who i was thinking about now. and referring to Justin Smith.

@az … I’m trying to give Royal Pains a chance. USA usually hits on these types of shows, so I’ll give it another 2/3 episodes.

    • azruavatar says:

I’ve already got House. Royal Pains just hasn’t worked for me after 2-3 episodes. I just caught an episode of Mental last night on FOX though and it was a lot better than I expected. The filming is a little disorienting — something in the camera work I think — but the twist in last night’s episode was really, really good and not what I expected. I’m going to have to watch a few of those episodes that I missed.

  17. tom s. says:

If derosa isn’t back or his wrist is keeping him from hitting after the asb, I could imagine worse than promoting barden again, see if he’s out of his funk.

  18. tom s. says:

Erik is tweeting that bittle is signed. Which would mean everybody from miller to no. 16 is signed.

  19. JC says:

ArRedbird – Thanks! That is exactly what I was looking for. Looks like just about all our players have signed (8 remaining including the all important Miller!). That site also now shows Bittle has signed.
