A lot of games going on and not a lot of news and notes for today.
However as you all know, Ty Greene is back down to Memphis and had a terrible game and Brian Barden is back up with the big club.
PJ Walters rocks and Trey Hearne rolls tonight in the DFR.
[AZ Update -- John Marecek tweeting that catcher Charles Culter was promoted to Palm Beach from Quad Cities. He cured cancer AND split the atom. Can't hold him back!]
Let’s Rock:
- The American PJ Walters was back in full effect tonight. He had it all going for him. He shut out the Express over 7 innings, allowing only 3 hits and striking out 5 while walking only 1.
- 12 Fingers Perez allowed 1 hit in his 1 inning.
- Matt Scherer closed the game down with a DP to end the game. It looks like Jess Todd was unavailable after working last night.
- 1 run is cute when you win, but there was not a lot of hits to go around.
- Dan Descalso went 1-3 with a double and the only run.
- Nick Stav drove him in with a triple on the way to 1-3 with a walk.
- Jon Jay had the other hit and went 1-4.
- Ty Greene, back from STL, continued his struggles with a golden sombrero.
- Trey Hearne was strong over 7.1 innings, the only blemish on his record was an inherited runner allowed to score by Mr. Eduardo Sanchez. He struck out 5, walked 3 and allowed only 8 hits.
- As mentioned above, Sanchez allowed an inherited runner to score in .2 of an inning, allowing a hit and 2 strikeouts.
- Francisco Samuel was OK Sammy tonight as he allowed 2 hits, but most importantly no runs in the 9th for his 20th save.
- Sugar 2 Shane Peterson was 2-3 with a double, a triple and a walk.
- Tyler Henley was 3-4 with an RBI.
- Mike Folli was 2-3.
- Nick Derba will be wearing the leprechaun hat in warm-ups tomorrow as he went 0-4 with 3 Ks.
- Chuckie Fick started the game for the Cardinals and held Fort Myers in check over 5 innings allowing 2 runs even though he did allow 9 hits and 1 walk. I guess that’s what you call limiting the damage.
- Jason Buuuuuuuursma stranded Fick’s two runners in the 6th with 1 strikeout.
- Tom Eager struck out 1 in his 2 shutout innings of work.
- Adam Reifer struck out 1 and earned his 11th save.
- Domnits are a Girl’s Best Friend Bolivar returns to the DFR with a 3 for 3 night.
- Aaron Luna was playing right field and got an RBI without a hit or a walk. Nicely done, Aaron. That’s skill right there.
- Adron Chambers went 1-3 with an RBI and nailed a runner at 3rd base.
Quad Cities 4, Cedar Rapids 5 (11 innings)
- Scott McGregor gave up 2 runs in 4 innings.
- Nick McNully got off to a dubious start to his career with 2 runs allowed in 1 inning.
- Miguel Tapia Pudding struck out 2 and walked 0 in 2 innings.
- Gary Daley walked 3 in his 1 inning of work.
- Ramon Delgado pitched 2 uneventful innings.
- David Carpenter took the loss with 2 hits and 2 walks.
- Local Boy Travis Mitchell went 2-4.
- Freddy Parejo was 2-4 with a double.
- Matt Carpenter was 2-5 with a double and a walk.
- Justin Edwards started the game and gave up 2 runs in 3 innings. He struck out 5 and walked only 1.
- Kevin Siegrist took the win with almost an identical line, but he only struck out 3.
- Joshua Squatrito put the squadoosh on the opposition and struck out 4 in his 2 innings of work.
- LaCurtis Mayes got the save with 1 K and 1 hit.
- Nico Vasquez stirs…he stirs! He went 2-4 with a stolen base out of the DH position.
- Xaiver Scruggs went yard on the way to 2-4 for the day.
- Ivan Castro was 2-4 with 2 ribbies.
- Devin Goodwin was also 2-4 (it’s a theme) with a walk and an RBI.
- Michael Thompson took the loss for the Cardinals over 4 innings. He struck out 2 and walked 0 on the high side, but on the low side he allowed 6 hits.
- Jose Rada pitched the 1 inning between the piggy-backs and struck out 1 and walked 1.
- Anthony Ferrara took his turn and pitched 3 innings giving up 1 unearned run. He struck out 3 and walked none.
- Aaron Terry mopped up the last inning with 1 strikeout.
- No runs so not a lot of hitters to talk about.
- But, Richard Racobaldo went 2-4.
- Hector Alvarez was 1-3 with a double. He also had a throwing error at short.

Daily Farm Report 6/6/09?
That’s it, who turned the wheel and moved the island to send us back a month?!
Oh wow, it is July, isn’t it?
Thanks for the head’s up Scott. I’ve fixed it.
ooh, that means we can re-do the draft! good thing/bad thing?
I was going through some of BA’s scouting reports on the 08 draft class and it said that Peterson has below average speed. I was under the impression he had above average to good speed?
Walters finally brings his A game and Matt Carpenter continues to rake. Trey Hearne has been nothing but impressive, is there a promotion coming soon and what is his one or two line scouting report?
Carpenter-Just saw him. Decent all-around tools for me, but I’m no scout. Good runner, decent fielder, good arm. Nice swing, not sure how much power he will hit for. Could be interesting sleeper.
Hearne is a soft-tossing control artist with your usual three to four pitch mix, iirc.
Once I figure out why niko is dhing I’ll be more pleased with his day.
Is it just me, or is the fact that we will inevitably lose Todd as the ptbnl depressing?
Niko was the DH because we had to have Mr. .180 SLG at SS instead.
/sarcasm
in reality though I would assume it is spreading the love around allowing others to get time in the field while still keeping him in the lineup.
BTW Niko actually has a lower SLG at Batavia than Ryan Jackson’s .180 that I mentioned above while the 2B is “racking” compared to those to with a .317 SLG
Carpenter just keeps hitting. I was a big fan of his going into the draft….was very excited when we drafted him…but never expected this out of the gate. I know its a small sample but the dude is obviously able to hit the talent he has seen so far. Will be curious how he does the rest of the year and next year…if he keeps hitting we will see him move up a notch or 2 in the system fairly quickly.
BTW – What do we know about our 10th round pick Hector Hernandez? I see he is with the GCL and has not even pitched an inning. Anyone found a good scouting report on him or a video?
Ask and you shall receive.
Here is Hector’s scouting video, I like it a lot.

Tyler Greene seems to have forgotten how to hit, reverted to his old, bad ways at the plate, and negated all the earlier good vibes about his improvement. What happened? As for Nick Derba, he seems to be intent on proving that defense can only take you so far. Is there a term for sinking below .100? Double Mendoza? Of course, he didn’t do much better at Palm Beach. I hope he can pitch.
While in this negative vein, has anyone noticed that last year’s July 2 phenom, de la Cruz, is hitting all of .037 in the Gulf Coast League, with strikeouts in more than half of his at bats? At his age it’s not surprising or devastating to find him overmatched, but it does suggest we shouldn’t get too excited yet about Wagner Mateo.
Well Marmoll was below the double Mendoza line about 5 days ago is now flirting with the real Mendoza line. He’s even flashed some power while doing it.
Need some help….Can you tell me how I can get in touch with Marty Marion, long ago shortstop for the Cardinals? I’ve tried many avenues but can’t get the info. Thanks.
Looks Like Derosa is headed to DL and Stavi is back with the big club
