The MLB Network’s Noah Coslov has a great write-up about Cardinals AAA reliever Pete Parise and his journey from being undrafted to the Indy Leagues to pitching in AAA Memphis.
The organization went an even 3 – 3 tonight.
As a random waiter I had at a resort told me every time he brought out my food…enjoy it.
UPDATE: Francisco Samuel has been named as an injury replacement for the Future’s Game on July 14th. Even more reason to watch!
AZ Update: As mentioned in the comments, and buried in this Strauss piece, Bryan Anderson had season ending shoulder surgery on Tuesday. Bummer. He was headed for a plummet in the prospect lists as it was but this pretty much seals his fate.
- Kyle Lohse started the game for Memphis rehabbing and was sharp.
- Pete Parise, star of the DFR, gave up 1 run in his 1.2 innings of work.
- Royce Ring handled 1 lefty in .1 of an inning.
- Jess Todd allowed 1 hit in getting his 19th save.
- Mr. Wallace went 2-3 with a walk and a RBI.
- Mark Hamilton went 2-4 with a double.
- Mark Shorey went 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Brandon Dickson was red hot until the 9th inning. But, all in all, he was outstanding. He struck out 7 and walked 0 over 8.1 innings. He allowed a total of 3 runs, 2 in the 9th inning. He also ended up with 10 hits, which is a lot, but the K-BB is a great sign.
- Marco Gonzalez allowed 1 of Dickson’s runners to score and finished off the game.
- James Rapoport led the hitters with a 3-4 night. He doubled and had 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.
- Chicken Fried Steve Hill was 1-5 but it was a big 1. He hit a 2-run HR.
- Mike Folli was 2-3 with a walk.
- Colt Sedbrook was 2-5 with 2 RBIs.
- Sugar 2 Shane Peterson was also 2-5 with 2 RBIs.
- Richard Castillo started the game and didn’t have what I’d call a great outing… He walked only 1 and struck out 5, but he allowed 10 hits and 6 runs (3 earned).
- Yonathan Gonzalez allowed 1 hit in 2 shutout innings.
- Casey Mulligan allowed 1 tack on run, but struck out 2.
- Charles Cutler, liberated from Quad Cities by the CCLF (Charles Cutler Liberation Front) went 3-4 with 2 doubles. He did allow 1 stolen base on 1 attempt, but it was by a player who has 31 steals so far this year. No shame in that.
- Adron Chambers went 2-4.
- Aaron Luna was 1-4.
- Kevin Thomas started and took the loss with 3 tough innings.
- Adam Veres struck out 4 in 2 innings, but also allowed 3 runs on 3 hits.
- Joel Pichardo had 2 hits and a K in his inning.
- Matthew Frogurt struck out 2 in his inning.
- Gary Daley is moving toward lower and lower leverage innings and walked 2 and struck out 1 in his inning.
- Cutler’s replacement, Jack Cawley went 2-3 with a double and an RBI.
- Osvaldo Morales hit a 2-run HR.
- Alex Castellanos was 2-4 out of the leadoff spot.
- Jared Bogany was 1-4 with a double.
- Daniel Calhoun started for the Muckdogs and went 5 solid striking out 6 and walking 0. He gave up 1 earned run.
- Michael Blazek pitched the next 3, and gave up 1 run. But, that was enough to take the loss on this day.
- Ryde Rodriquez was 2-4, all of them jam shots for Ree-DAY.
- X-man went 1-4 with a double.
- Your daily Niko update went 1-4 with a caught stealing.
- John Durham started for JC and went 4 strong innings giving up 1 run (0 earned). He struck out 3 to 0 walks.
- Randy Santos took the win even though he struggled. He allowed 3 runs on 5 hits.
- However, all of his runs were scored while Travis Lawler Skates was on the mound.
- David Kington struck out 1 in earning the save.
- Michael Swinson went 2-2 with 2 walks.
- Mountain Matt Adams was 1-3 with 3 RBIs.
- Yunier Castillo was 2-4 with a double.
- Richard Racobaldo’s Modern Life was 2-3 with a double as well.

Cutler promoted…..WOW!
A few questions about players in our system. I know Daryl Jones is currently on the 7-day DL, but when he comes how soon do you think he will be able to be called up to AAA. I would like for him to get a good chunk of time there this season so he can help out in the majors next year (replacing Duncan, fingers crossed). I’m assuming Ankiel will be gone as well. Also how soon do you think Jaime Garcia will be able to make a MLB contribution. Reports say he could be back in September but I doubt he’ll be in the big leagues then. So for next season, how soon, if at all, do you see him making the big league club?
You should call him Travis “The King” Lawler, a la his old wrestling legend counterpart Jerry.
Way to go Charlie!
I vote Travis Long Arm of the Lawler.
Hurray for Cutler as well. Also Hurray for Colby, sorry for the big show player but he is too hot not to get a shout out. Swinson has turned out to be my everyday “wonder what he did today” player, hope he keeps it up and finds himself in A ball in the near future.
“Class AAA catcher Bryan Anderson had surgery Tuesday to repair a third-degree separation of his left shoulder. Anderson will miss the rest of the season” from Joe Strauss.
No place like home for the Memphis Redbirds this year!
26-16 at home with a 2.87 ERA
15-27 on the road with a 5.36 ERA
Good to see a strong outing from dickson.not many bright spots in the pitching lines from springfield.
If descalso is in memphis, who’s handing 2b at spfld? Is loony lovegood due for a promotion?
Colt Sedbrook took over 2b at Springfield.
And Folli can play there too.
Good to see Sedbrook hitting a little big at Springfield.
Jones’ season is quickly becoming a push, due to the injuries. He needs a strong second half, both playing time-wise as well as increased pop.
How so? He was one of the top players in the Texas League this year at age 21, just a few days ago turning 22.
The injuries are troublesome but with his skillset, I’m not too worried. At worst, he starts the season in AAA next year and is called up by June. At best, he wins the LF job outright in Spring Training from Chris Duncan.
Speaking of injuries what is the latest on Freese? Last I heard was he had the surgery in middle of May and at the time they thought a month. But here we are about 7 weeks later and no mention. Anyone got the scoop?
Real excited about Calhoun and pleased with the early results. The best major leaguer drafted from Murray State so far is Kirk Rueter, who’s about the same size as Calhoun and had a pretty decent career. Here’s hoping Dan can maintain a higher k-rate than Rueter.
Was on vacation last week so may have missed the transition, but I dig the links going to fangraphs instead of first inning. (No offense to first inning, of course.)
I wish fangraphs would buff up their minor league pages. First inning has better data but the interface leaves a lot to be desired, imo.
