Today’s player feature is Nick Derba.

Nick Derba is currently the catcher for class AA Springfield. He’s 23 and a very good catcher defensively. However…he has originated the phrase “Derba Line” for his work in the batting box as he is batting .098 on the year. .100 is the Derba Line if you haven’t guessed.

All in good fun as we obviously wish Nick Derba the best as he is the second best defensive catcher in the system behind Matt Pagnozzi.

Matt Baker has a great write-up about Nick here.

Also, here’s what Ben Badler of BA had to say about yesterday’s topic, Mr. Daryl Jones. (Update: DJ Tools is back on the DL for the same injury Ben references below.)

Ben Badler: Hard to get a real feel for Jones’ abilities yesterday because he’s only played in two other games this month due to injury. A lot of scouts will look at him and see a fourth outfielder, but I think he could be a starting left fielder in a different mold from your typical plus-plus power LF who gives half of it back in the field. The power is going to need to continue to develop, but that’s typically the last thing to come around for a hitter. If he’s a high on-base guy with moderate power and above-average defense, that’s good enough to be a starting left fielder in the big leagues.

Let’s rock 4 games tonight.

Springfield 6, Midland 7

  • David Kopp returned to AA and didn’t have the outing that he had envisioned this morning.
  • Brandon Dickson pitched the other 7 innings. He allowed 1 inherited runner to score and then not another runner until the bottom of the ninth. He took the loss in the game.
  • Andrew Brown was 2-4.
  • Mike Folli was 1-2 with an RBI and 2 walks.
  • Kozma, Peterson, Hill and Cruz all each had an RBI.

Palm Beach 2, Fort Myers 0

  • The gem was spun today by Nick Additon. He only allowed 4 hits over 7 innings striking out 5 and walking 2.
  • The two true outcomes brothers came in and Tom Eager walked 2 and then was pulled.
  • Casey Mulligan struck out the side to strand the 2 baserunners.
  • Adam Reifer got the save with 1 walk allowed.
  • Troy Glaus (who?) DH’ed and went 1-4 with a double and an RBI.
  • Charles Cutler was 2-4 with 2 doubles as he continues his hot start from Quad Cities.
  • Francisco Rivera was 2-3 with a double.
  • Adron Chambers was 2-5 but got picked off.

Quad Cities 5, Clinton 4 (12 innings)

  • Kevin Thomas started and gave up 4 runs in 4 innings. The rest of the relievers pitched shutout baseball.
  • Miguel Tapia pudding pitched 2.2.
  • Matthew Frevert continues to be un-scored-upon with 1.1 innings.
  • David Carpenter struck out 2 in 2 innings.
  • Ramon Delgado picked up the win with 3 Ks in 2 innings.
  • Jack Cawley was 3-5 with a double and a walk.
  • Osvaldo Morales was 3-6.
  • Alex Castellanos has a 2-run HR.
  • Jon Edwards sighting with the other 2-run HR. But, 3 strikeouts on the other side of that.
  • Quad Cities won the game on the old, single, error, single, sac fly.
  • Jared Bogany was 2-4 with 2 stolen bases.

Johnson City 6, Elizabethtown 8

Anyone else think it was odd that Alvarez Dh’ed instead of Wallace and not vice versa? It seemed as if Oquendo had some kind of say in that…

Very nice. Is that two good dickson outings in a row? I continue to await my luna promotion. Good for cutler to see him continuing his great season.by my count he hit twice as well as troy glaus. Can he play 3rd?

Dickison has the numbers – does he have the “stuff”?

Grabiel Hernandez, the 17-year-old shortstop playing for our team in the DSL, hit a double and triple yesterday.

For the season, 32 games, his slash lines are .354/.432/.575. He’s 4th in the league in total bases, with most of the power coming from his speed: 9 triples.

He also has 14 SB w/ 2 CS.

What’s intriguing to me is what Luhnow said about him in a radio interview with Bernie Miklasz: This is a guy they drafted for his glove, as well as his speed.

If his hitting is real — and I have no clue how well DSL stats carry over to MiLB and predict future success — he could be a guy with a Jose Reyes-like skill set.

    • Jeff Roman says:

He’s a good guy to keep an eye on definitely, but the competition in the DSL is inconsistent as best.

Let’s see what he can do when he gets over state-side into a short season team next year.

signed, i think you mean, and no, DSL stats don’t usually mean much. But I agree, his season has been a revelation. Moises Rodriguez, who now works for the Cardinals, is also the man who found Jose Reyes for the Mets, IIRC. Luhnow said he has Ryan Jackson defense, which is to say he can field in the majors right now. He’s definitely someone I’m keeping on eye on.

Kopp is not handling his promotion to AA at all…only 5 K’s in 16+ innings is just, ugh. His numbers make it seem that he’s overmatched, but i know that he just got called up…he needs to show signs of having figured it out by the next couple of starts, or get sent back down…what is his real prospect status?

STOP talking about grabiel hernandez…i don’t want my hopes to get up only to have them niko’d the next season

From Keith Law at ESPN Insider, on Daryl Jones:

    • Daryl Jones, OF, St. Louis
Jones is a great athlete who shows quick wrists at the plate and has good speed in the outfield. I can see why he doesn’t hit for power: He’s not a big guy to begin with, and he drifts all the way onto his front foot before his hands get started. So although he’s short to the ball and makes hard contact, his only power comes from his hands and wrists. He has a fringe-average arm, which will limit where he can play in the outfield. He didn’t get much chance to show during the game that he works the count well, which is an unusual skill for a raw, multisport amateur to develop, especially early in his pro career.

  7. VolsnCards5 says:

there seems to be a pretty large range among scouts on what DJ will be at the ML level…4th outfield type who won’t ever hit for power…or future leadoff man who will be able to muscle up for 10 or so jacks a year while playing very good D in left while also stealing 30+ bases

not sure i’ve ever seen a prospect who had scouts at such odds

    • erik says:

here’s the deal…if you don’t have 20 homer potential in LF, scouts start calling you a tweener. Nevermind he can draw walks, steal bases and play a pretty mean left field. Granted, him being limited to LF does ding his value, but it doesn’t automatically relegate him to 4th OF status.

Unfortunately, Dickson doesn’t have big-league starter stuff. He will make Triple-A, but that has to be where the ceiling closes in, maybe not even as a reliever.
Then again, he’s better than Ottavino…

Scouting report of Dickson, via BA Summer League reports:

The Valley League’s saves leader (13) and wins leader (five in relief), Dickson simply overwhelms hitters with gas. He showed good command of a low-to-mid-90s fastball while mixing in occasional cutters as a change of pace. Dickson has clean mechanics and a confident demeanor on the mound. The 6-foot-5, 190-pounder signed with the Cardinals after the Valley season and made six appearances in the Rookie-level Appalachian League, going 1-0, 7.11.

Sounds like he could make a decent reliever.

Andrew Moss went the – what!

    Tell me!

  10. MHandshear says:

    - Hello All, long time reader, first time poster . . .

    – After reading all the notes, stats, etc. on D. Jones, it struck me that Denard Span of the Twins might be an interesting comparison. Left-Handed swinger who was considered a top prospect without one glaring big-time skill. Nice speed, little pop, good glove, and strong average hitter strike-zone judgment. Basically, a very solid, winning player without an overly flashy game . . . .Thoughts? Good Comparison?

  11. VolsnCards5 says:

i hope jones becomes a denard span type…he’s been worth almost 2 wins already this season…a 3.5-4 WAR would look nice at the top of the cardinals lineup

  12. MHandshear says:

    - Thanks guys for reading and responding . . . I thought the comp. might work. I also hope he ends up being that type of player. He and “The Raz” would be nice as interchangeable parts at the top of the order. Also, just wondering . . . how are his v. Lefties splits? Here’s to hoping that he could be more than a platoon type player . . .
