With it being All-Star break in the big leagues, some of the minor leagues took their time to have off-days as well.
Everyone’s focused on St. Louis’s showcase in the All-Star game and rightly so. Consequently, its a slow news day.
Only 2 games in the system tonight, so I won’t delay you.
Like Apples in Stereo…lets “Go!”
- Ryan Kulik wasn’t great, but he got the job done, as it were, over 5 innings allowing 3 runs (1 earned). He walked 3 and allowed 4 hits.
- Sleeper Sam Freeman struck out 1 over 2 innings. Is he still a sleeper?
- Brian Broderick has some trouble on the mound, which was cleaned up by…
- Tyler Norrick who stranded 2 runners with a K.
- James Rapoport went yard and scored 3 runs.
- Tyler Henley was a quick 3-6 with a double and an RBI.
- Chicken Fried Steve Hill was one better with 2-6 with a double and 2 RBIs.
- Scott Schneider started for the Muckdogs and gave up 2 runs over 5 innings. He struck out 5, but allowed 5 hits and 3 walks.
- Eric Fornataro pitched 3.1 innings striking out 3 and left 1 runner for…
- Joe Kelly to deal with and he allowed that runner to score. Kelly also took the loss in the 10th to go with his blown save in the 9th. He has certainly had an inauspicious start to his big league career.
- Niko Vasquez – shhh don’t say anything about him being back, don’t jinx it! – was 1-2 with a double and 3 walks.
- D’Marcus Ingram went 2-4 and stole a base one time on base and got picked off the other time. He’s certainly got the speed to steal bases, but he’s been picked off and caught stealing quite a bit so far.
- Man of the World Luis De La Cruz was 0-4 with the only RBI for Batavia. He had an error and allowed 3 stolen bases.

Springfield scored 10 runs, not 9.
Fixed. Thanks Fredbird.
I looked at the Batavia game log for the 9th and 10th innings. Kelly came in with a man on third and 1 out. He struck out the first batter, then allowed the run to come in on a wild pitch. Then he got the final out on a fly ball.
In the 10th, he gave up a single that, according to the log, didn’t leave the infield (“ground ball to shortstop Ryan Jackson”). A pinch runner came in. The next guy sacrificed — Kelly threw him out at first — but the runner somehow made it to third on the sac bunt. Then the next guy drove in the winning run on a ground ball to left.
So, other than the wild pitch in the 9th, it sounds like he did exactly what he was supposed to do: he struck out the first guy he faced in the 9th with a runner on third and one out. Then, in the 10th, he got two guys to hit ground balls, with a sac bunt in between.
Maybe it was just bad luck or bad infield defense.
It’s hard to tell sometimes in these short season leagues. Runners score on all the strangest plays you can think of.
I agree Jeff, that “ground ball to the shortstop” could have been a fast grounder into short LF that the SS got to and had no chance to throw out a speedy runner, that speedy runner than took third on a sac bunt hit and run combo or the sac bunt was actually an attempt for a bunt base hit and he was trying to steal on the same play, plenty of odd explanations.
You’re such a

A scenario:
Ankiel is placed on the 15-day DL. The Cardinals look to promote a right-handed bat with pop as a replacement until DeRosa is ready. They find the AAA cupboard bare. Where do they turn? Amaury Cazana Marti. A fella can dream, can’t he?
brightoncardinal – I like your thinking!!!
