Palm Beach was postponed. Quad Cities game was suspended in the 3rd.

Troy Glaus and Khalil Greene will be heading to Memphis tomorrow.

[Edit: By the way, this DFR was brought to you by the two-part season finale of House, M.D. Season 4.  Still a little miffed that Amber died.  I liked her better than Thirteen or Kutner.]

Memphis 5, Omaha 3

  • Daniel Descalso was 0-for-3 with a walk. He also turned another double play.
  • Allen Craig smashed 2 homeruns. His overall line for the season (.765 OPS) still looks weak.
  • Adam Ottavino had a decent outing marred by an unfortunate 7th inning with 2 walks and a wild pitch. I’m wondering more and more if he lacks the stamina to really go late into games. It seems like quite a few of his starts go well until he runs out of gas later in the game. Ottavino pitched 6.1 innings striking out 4, walking 3 and allowing 4 hits. He allowed 3 ER.
  • Jess Todd struck out 2, walked 1 and allowed a hit in 2 scoreless frames. On the season, Todd has 56 strikeouts and walked 11. Todd doesn’t have a lot more to prove down in AAA but the Cardinals are insistent on using some lesser options that they can’t dismiss to the minors as easily. While the upside for Todd isn’t as high as other prospects, be assured that he gets asked about in trade scenarios.

Springfield 4, Directionally Challenged Arkansas 3 (12 innings)

  • James Rapoport was 2-for-5 with a walk.
  • Khalil Greene was 1-for-6 with a HR.
  • Shane Peterson was 2-for-4 with 2 walks.
  • Tyler Henley was 2-for-5 with a HR and a walk. That was his 10th HR of the season. Henley also had a walk-off single to left field to score Steven Hill.
  • Mike Folli was 1-for-5 with a big fly.
  • David Kopp lasted just 3.2 innings (pitch count) allowing 4 hits, 1 walk and striking out 2 for 3 ER.
  • Brandon Dickson tossed 6 scoreless frames striking out 6. He allowed 2 walks and 3 hits.
  • Eduardo Sanchez picks up the save with 2 scoreless frames striking out 2 and walking 1. He’s struck out 32 and walked 7 in 26 innings.

Palm Beach 4, Tampa 9

  • Francisco Rivera was 2-for-4.
  • Troy Glaus was 0-for-4 playing LF. Let’s just pause for a moment to understand the insanity of playing LF. [taps foot] Got it? He can’t throw the baseball from third but we’re going to put him in the outfield. The Cardinals have two glaring holes at 3rd and LF. Glaus is a natural 3B. Mark DeRosa has played a good bit of the outfield in recent years. If Glaus is going to help the Cardinals, it’s going to be as a 3B.
  • Blake Murphy was 2-for-3.
  • Chris Swauger was 2-for-2 with a HR and a walk.
  • Nick Additon struck out 8 in 6.1 innings. He walked 2, allowed 7 hits and 4 ER.
  • Casey Mulligan struck out 2 while retiring 5 batters.
  • Adam Reifer pitched a perfect frame striking out 1.
  • Jason Buuuuuuuuuuursma got lit up for 5 runs (4 earned) in the 10th when the game restarted after it’s suspension from 7/18.

Batavia 1, Tri-City 0

  • Ryan Jackson was 2-for-3.
  • Batavia picked up their run as a result of a Tri-Cit error.
  • Eric Fornataro pitched a 1 hitter through 7 innings.
  • Scott Schneider pitched 2 innings striking out 3 and allowing 3 hits.

Johnson City 6, Bluefield 0

  • Robert Stock was 2-for-4.
  • (Richard) Raco Racobaldo was 1-for-3 with a double. He’s hitting .404 in JC so far.
  • Matthew Adams was 3-for-5.
  • Ted Obregon, 2B, was 3-for-4 with a triple.
  • Reynier Gonzalez struck out 9 over 5 innings. He allowed just 1 hit and walked 1.
  • Andrew Moss pitched 4 scoreless frames striking out 4 and walking 2.

I’m not saying I disagree with you on the absurdity of Glaus in LF, but if he can’t throw the ball there is NO way he can play third base. How many throws on average does a third baseman need to make in a game? 4,5,6? LF? 1 or 2? I see how it’s worth considering if he has any range whatsoever. I’d have to see it to believe that he can do it, but there’s no question he’d be an offensive improvement over Dunkiel (as chuckb put it) at this point.

  2. Kilgore says:

Forget about the recession, I am buying me some Stock! Sorry that was bad.

  3. Andrew says:

Glaus wouldn’t be put in many situations when he had to make a strong throw in LF. 3b would be a much greater strain on his arm. That being said he doesn’t look to be hitting at all so why put him out there until he gets his stroke back. I doubt we get anything out of him this year at all, trade him to the AL where they can use a DH.

  4. AP5 says:

I still don’t know what to make of Stock. From all the scouting reports I’ve read, he projected better as a starting pitcher, but he’s hitting well. Is it a matter of he’s just too good for that level or is he a legitimate hitter.

  5. Tomm says:

Glaus playing any position in the field makes no sense. Duncan and Ankiel being on the active roster also makes no sense. Any of our minor league outfielders at any level are an instant upgrade over any of these 3 (combined offense and defense).

Roster moves that need to happen before the season is over (if no trades)

Ankiel to the DL – (he can replace Stavinoha if returns healthy and productive)
DFA Duncan- no power, no defense…no ML career
DFA Wellemeyer- he’s a mess and doesn’t look like he’s figuring things out
DFA Thurston – he’s been hitting better lately, but I don’t see it lasting much longer.
Send PJ Walters to Memphis – I just don’t see him having much of a ML career
Release K. Greene – I wish him well, but it’s not gonna work out. Go home and clear your head for next year Khalil
Trade Glaus- he has no business playing in the field this season.
Release Thompson – He could still be a decent ML pitcher in a defined role…I think..he’ll never have that here.
Call up Craig – this year’s Joe Mather…if he gets a shot
Call up Boggs – an upgrade over Welley
Call up Wallace – I’m not saying right now…but eventually…hopefully sooner than later
Call up Hawksworth – I liked him in the bullpen
Call up Tyler Greene – We need a competant backup for SS
Call up Jarret Hoffpauir – I like him in a pinch-hitting role

    to summarize:

    Who’s in:
    Craig – LF/3B/1B
    Boggs – SP
    Wallace – 3B
    Hawksworth – RP
    Greene – IF
    Hoffpauir – 2B/PH

    Who’s out:
    Ankiel
    Duncan
    Thurston
    Wellemeyer
    Thompson
    Walters

As Hungo would say – “its kinda like making a trade”

I don’t watch House or anything, but is that a spoiler worth warning people about?

    • azruavatar says:

mmmm, not really. Season 5 just wrapped and anyone who watches with regularity knows what happened. Plus, the way the episode is done makes it worth the watching even if you know the outcome. What gets her and Wilson’s reaction are heart rending (if I had a heart).

  7. tom s. says:

Is there any reason josh kinney holds a spot on the 25 man when jess todd doesn’t? The 40-man issue went out the door when they called jess up for one day.

  8. cardzfanbub says:

Anybody else excited to see Freese back and playing? He could quickly become a BIG part of our stretch run. With him at third, Derosa in left and Thurston nowhere close to the STL team we could have a much improved offense/defense.

  9. Lou Schuler says:

To elaborate on what Bub said:

Freese was 1-2 for the GCL Cards, and started 2 DPs from third base. (He was replaced by Roberto de la Cruz, who hit a double, his first XBH of the season.)

Also, in the DSL all-star game, Grabiel Hernandez got a pinch-hit, one of only 2 hits by the NL all-stars, who were shut out. The two Cards pitchers in the game were unscathed.

  10. Easy says:

Kilgore- We can at least assess his trade value as the Stock Market.

  11. Gruntosaurus says:

“no question [Glaus would] be an offensive improvement over Dunkiel (as chuckb put it) at this point.” I don’t agree. He’s not exactly setting the minors on fire.

We really don’t know what Glaus is capable of, and answer could well be “nothing.” That doesn’t necessarily put him BEHIND Dunkiel, which is sort of a sad statement, but it also doesn’t make him an improvement.

It still seems to me as though Walrus is the only solution to the problem that is Joe Thurston. OTOH, with all of the random catastrophes that have befallen Cardinals 3Bs this year, it may be best to shield him until the inexplicable karma storm passes, lest he get sucked into it….

  12. Liam says:

Gotta disagree on the LF>3B arm-stress assumption as well. You’ll often throw flat footed from third, while outfielders can use their legs more (outfielders have more time to position themselves in line with the ball and their target; third basemen are going away from first presumably half the time they field the ball). A third baseman has to make an accurate throw to first that doesn’t pull the baseman off, an outfielder has to hit the cutoff man who isn’t generally covering a base.

And just to be further contrarian: I couldn’t stand Amber. (Or Kuttner).

  13. jjray says:

Agree with Liam on the Glaus to left field thing. It’s a place to hide his bat … assuming Glaus can give us something at the plate. Heck, he could roll the ball to Colby and I’m fine with that so long as Glaus hits.

  14. Clark says:

In reply to Tom S’s question, Kenney is still on the team for the same reason Duncan is. They both were key parts to the 2006 World Series, and Larussa is loyal to a fault. And on another point, Pujols still played left field when he couldn’t throw because of his elbow, and they had tino martinez. So I figure it would be the same for Glaus.

  15. prophetjohn says:

house is unwatchable beyond season three

  16. gforce says:

Wow — can’t believe to hear the House criticism. I won’t give anything away to non-watchers but to me, it is the best show on TV. Agree all the way with HL — the end of this past season was unexpected and well done.

I’m torn on the Cutthroat B*tch (Amber) role. She had a purpose and did the job skillfully. I’m just not sold that her and Wilson were right for each other.

  17. Wade says:

I have never been able to get into House. IMO the best show on TV is 30 Rock. Helluva lot better than anything on national TV as far as i see. Still love Psych and Burn Notice though. I have given up on Royal Pains though.

  18. themop10 says:

Why wouldn’t Glaus to go to 3rd, DeRosa to 2nd and Shu to LF? That seems like our best lineup.

  19. Andrew says:

The Office is still great not as good as it was but still very good. Glaus can’t throw it from 3rd to 1st is the reason they are trying him out in the OF

  20. UofIx3 says:

Glaus talked about why he could handle throwing from LF, but not 3B:

“I can throw; I just can’t throw it as hard as I could. That’s why I came off third base,” he said. “At third base a lot of throws are moderately off balance. The effort put into a poor angle hurts. I can get it over there. But I can’t make all the plays over there.

    ….

“I’ll throw it in. I’m not going to hand it to him,” Glaus said. “It’s like a normal play.

“Am I going to pick up a ball and throw a guy out at the plate? Probably not. It’s all about hitting a cut-off man. Am I going to come up and throw a strike 200 feet on a line? That’s unlikely. But I can catch a ground ball, come up and hit a cut-off man. Most of the throws out there are on-balance. You can get yourself together and take a longer action, which is less painful.”
