Let’s take a leisurely ride downstream on the Mississippi and check on the Memphis Redbirds.
Prospects on Top 20 list:
Bryan Anderson (DL), David Freese, Jess Todd, Mitch Boggs, Allen Craig, Jon Jay, Clayton Mortensen, Brett Wallace, Adam Ottavino.
The Cavalry!
Evan MacLane was traded for and Oneli Perez was picked up from the Independent League to help bolster the Redbirds pitching staff that was beset by injuries and call-ups.
MacLane hasn’t been fooling too many people, but he has been eating innings. Perez has 12 fingers and has 12 strikeouts over 16 innings so far.
The Dan Band
2009 Hot Prospect Daniel Descalso was promoted to Memphis on July 3rd and continued his hot streak. He’s slashing: .333/.373./.426 so far in AAA.
On the Shuttle
Nick Stavinoha, Shane Robinson, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Tyler Greene, Blake Hawksworth, Mitch Boggs, PJ Walters and Clayton Mortensen have all been up to the big club and back this year.
I Thought You Were Supposed to Bring the Bats?
The Redbirds are 3rd to last in AVG and 2nd to last in all the other slash categories in the PCL.
We are at .500 How?
The Redbirds are 5th in ERA to make up for their atrocious hitting.
Say it Ain’t So, Joe
Joe Mather OPS’ed .505 on the year before being shut down for the season with an injury. However that OPS is 100 points higher than at the previous Club Check.
Getting Off The Schneid
Adam Ottavino didn’t break out this year so much and just plain broke. He started the season 0-9 and now sits at 2-9 as he finally got his first wins of the year in his last two starts. His numbers aren’t terrible, but he got hurt by the lack of offense for Memphis.
Who’s That Man?
Allen Craig has start to heat up as he’s batting .316 with 3 HRs over the last 10 games.
Jon Jay has done the same hitting .318 with 2 HRs over the past 10 games.
Clay-mation
Clayton Mortensen earned a quick callup to the big league club for a cup of coffee, but has shown some good stuff in AAA. His K/BB is almost 2 to 1
Old Man Muscles
Jarrett Hoffpauir is second on the team with 10 HRs and got enough attention from the brass to earn himself a callup to St. Louis as well.
*Stats of July 20th.

Interesting question, which of these players do you think could be seen as legit trade bait for a veteran bat or pitcher down the stretch?
Reportedly, this is who Toronto wanted from the Mets for Halladay: Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Ruben Tejada.
Seems like a lot of top-tier prospects. Any idea what the comps would be in the Cardinals system? Wallace or Jones, plus a couple top pitching prospects?
the report is false, it was debunked by law and others.
I think you can add Todd as having been “On the Shuttle”, foolish as it was at the time…
Apparently LaGenius has mailed in this game. How in the hell does Walters bat in the 7th down four runs? We’d better pray Carpenter is really sharp tomorrow.
Yea this game is over already, I see this as a positive maybe Walters has a strong showing and that gives LaRussa more confidence in his ability. I much rather have Walters, Boggs or Mortensen than Wellermeyer
I know Boggs hasn’t done so well in AAA after being sent back down, but he pitched pretty well in the bigs this year. I’m not really sure why they don’t give him another chance.
Sometimes you gotta just trust your talent, I think alot of these guys will need to make the adjustment to the Bigs and that wont happen if they don’t get up here. Wellermeyer is as much as automatic loss as Kip Wells was a few years ago. Get one of them up here starting and them some experience with Duncan. That being said I think its possible they aren’t willing to commit to any of these guys yet is that Tony wants McClellan to be his 4th of 5th starter next year.
