Springfield is currently second in the division just a half game back of the hated Arkansians located in the Northwest part of the state.  They’ll meet up at Hammons Field this weekend for a 4 game set.

Prospects From Top 20 List:

Daryl Jones (DL), Pete Kozma, Tyler Henley, Lance Lynn, Fernando Salas

Over the Hill – After starting the season with a 1.100+ OPS in April, Steve Hill hasn’t been able to breach the .750 OPS barrier for any month since.  He’s currently hitting .265/.321/.454 on the season.

Walk It Out – With an OBP higher than his SLG, James Rapoport leads the club in walks with 51 in ~350PAs and a .381 OBP.

Small Ball – Springfield has just two players with double digit homeruns: Steven Hill and Tyler Henley.

Try A Different Mitt – Pete Kozma has as many errors (17) as the next three players on the Springfield roster.

Smuggled Across the Border – After being loaned out to the Mexican League in 2008, Trey Hearne has pitched 102 innings allowing less than a hit an inning with a 2:1 K:BB ratio.  (No, you won’t see him on the Top 20 next year.)

LOKGy? – Tyler Norrick is third on the team in strikeouts despite not starting a game.  He’s racked up 67 Ks in 41 innings.

Just Hit It – With a .335 batting average, Tyler Henley is 3rd in the Texas League.  Scouts will call him a 4th/5th outfielder due to lack of power but he remains an intriguing bat with an (admittedly) uncharacteristic skillset for an outfielder.  He’s 6th in the league in OBP at .396.

Gone But Not Forgotten – Daniel Descalso, recently promoted to Memphis, is littered all over the Texas League leader boards.  He finished with a .323/.396/.521 line with 8 HRs and approximately 2.5 million double plays.

This Is A Team Sport – With 636 Ks in ~3500 PAs, Springfield hitters lead the league in strikeouts outpacing the next team by 43.  They also have (by far) the fewest baserunning plays (SB + CS).

Doesn’t Mean A Thing - Francisco Samuel is second in the league with 22 saves. Sammy has walked nearly a batter an inning this season.

Walk It Out, Second Verse – Cardinal Pitchers lead the league in walks with 413 in 808 innings.  Eddie Degerman actually has more walks than innings pitched.

When did Henley move to the southern league?

I don’t want to sound like a grouch, but, why does everyone have to correct every little mistake these authors make? Any reasonable thinking Cardinal fan would know that mistakes, such as “the Southern League”, are minor accidents and can figure it out. These authors are not pros and do a fantastic job of keeping us informed. I appreciate their good work. If you are an avid enough fan to read this site—then you don’t need the obvious pointed out. Think about it.

Not that i personally care about the errors, as some of them get past me, but they might not get past by some of the professional writers that peruse this site.

I think the authors do a fine job as well, but editing should be a big part of it if you want to keep the site as legitimate as possible.

Bernie has made reference to this site on at least two occasions that i can think of right off the bat (no pun intended. or was it??????)

    Casey – I agree wholeheartedly.
