The Sweet Tune of Organizational Harmony
“The way I look at it is he was traded for a player who had very little (leverage) … he was designated for assignment,” Duncan said. “It’s highly unusual for a major-league roster player to be traded for somebody like that. So somebody wanted to get him out of the organization, and they’ve accomplished what they wanted to accomplish.
“Either that or we don’t have anybody in the minor leagues that they wanted for (Lugo). One or the other.”
- Tyler Greene got a hit.
- Blake Hawksworth had eggs for breakfast this morning. Oh, the things you’ll find on Twitter. Anyways, that protein helped Hawk pitch his little heart out. Dude threw 7 scoreless innings, striking out 5 and giving up 1 hit.
- Jess Todd took the loss in the 8th inning of this shortened game. He gave up 2 hits and a walk, while striking out 1.
- Tyler Greene and Jon Jay both went 2-for-3, with Greene picking up a double.
- Allen Craig just holds his palms towards the skies and asks “What a brother gotta do to get the call?” 3 for 3, 4 RBI thanks to a 3-run HR. Craig is hitting .277 since June 1st with 11 XBH. The guy is playing every position on the demand besides battery. Give him a shot while he is hot.
- Paul Shorey had a double.
- Ok, so how are Evan MacLane and Hawk not better options than Todd Wellemeyer? Evan continued his PCL mastery, pitching 6 innings of 6 hits ball with 6 strikeouts. Eek! He allowed 1 ER.
- Oneli Perez finished up the night with an inning of 1 hit, 1 walk pitching.
- Shane Peterson had a double.
- Steven Hill had a single and 2 walks while James Rapoport had a hit.
- Lance Lynn pitched great and took the loss. He went 7, gave up 5 hits and struck out 7.
- Eduardo Sanchez was perfect in the 8th.
Palm Beach 5, Daytona 3 (12 innings)
- Adron Chambers had a hit and 2 walks.
- Charles Cutler and Curt Smith, or Curt and Cut had 2 hits apiece. As did Domnit Bolivar, though one of his was a double.
- Aaron Luna hit a double and so did Charlie Swauger.
- Richard Castillo started and gave up 3 ERs over 3.2 innings. He walked 4 and gave up 4 hits.
- Chrysanthemum Linares pitched a scoreless 2.1 innings, striking out 1.
- Chuckie Fick struck out 3 over 2.0 IP and Adam Reifer walked 1 in 1 IP.
- Casey Mulligan walked 2 and struck out 1 in 2 IP.
- The winner was Jason Buursma. He gave up a hiit and picked up a striikeeoouut in his 2 innings.
Quad Cities 0, West Michigan 4
- Matthew Carpenter and Jon Edwards both picked up a double.
- Osvaldo Morales, Travis Mitchell and Kyle Conley had the other 2 hits in the game.
- Miguel Tapia took the loss. He gave up 4 runs (3 ER) in 5 innings. He struck out 3 and gave up 6 hits, one of which was a HR.
- Adam Veres was perfect over 2 innings, striking out 3.
- Joel Pichardo gave up a hit and struck out 2 in 1 IP.
- David Carpenter was perfect in his 1 inning, striking out 1.
- Matthew Adams had 2 doubles and drove in a run.
- Edgar Lara also had a double and drove in a run. More efficient.
- Hector Alvarez and Richard Racobaldo both went 1 for 2 and drove in a run. Racobaldo had 3 walks.
- Anthony Ferrara walked 4 and struck out 3 in his 4 innings. He gave up 3 Runs (2 ER) on 3 hits.
- Jose Rada gave up nada in the runs department, striking out 1 in his inning.
- Michael Thompson gave up 4 hits and an earned run in 2.1 innings.
- Travis The King Lawler struck out the only 2 batters he faced.
- David Kington struck out 1 but gave up 2 ER on 2 hits for the loss.
- Alan Ahmady was 2-for-4 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
- Nico Vasquez was 2-for-4 with 1 double and 2 RBI. What a great teammate.
- Ryde Rodriguez and Ivan Castro hit a triple.
- Luis De La Cruz was 2-for-4.
- Justin Edwards struck out 5 in 4 innings but gave up 5 hits and 2 ER in doing so.
- Jonny Bravo (everybody do the monkey now!) got the win with his 3 innings of scoreless baseball. He struck out 4 and walked 2.
- Daniel Richardson gave up a run and 2 hits while only getting 1 out.
- Andres Rosales struck out the only 2 batters he faced.
- LaCurtis Mayes made a mess of things giving up 3 runs (2 ER) while getting 2 outs and walking 1.
- Santo Maertz finished off the last out after giving up a walk with a strikeout.
- 567 people were at this game. Zoinks!

When was the quote by Duncan before or after the game? Reports are that Big Duncan was really upset but has calmed down about it because Little Dunc is happy with the trade.
I’ve never been a big Hawksworth guy, but my God….don’t you have to give either him or Boggs a shot in the rotation here? I’d think they would have liked what they saw from Hawksworth. I just assumed his getting sent down was because they needed an arm with the doubleheader.
Tony stated after Hawkworths performance that he had earned a spot back as one of the Cardinals better prospects
…oh dear.
I think I have aphasia. All day I tried writing words and ended up typing other words that kinda sound like them.
For instance (I almost typed existence there), that should say ‘every position all over the diamond’ not demand.
Anyone here a doctor. I think I have a brain injury (just tried to type energy).
According to the box score of the PB game, the Daytona speedsters stole 8 bases off Cutler.
Only one guy was listed as CS, but he was also listed as picked off. I don’t know if that’s two separate plays — he was picked off first by the pitcher, and in another inning he was caught stealing second by Cutler — or if it was the same play.
Either way, I don’t think this says anything good about Cutler’s potential behind the plate.
Maybe the bat will play at a different position?
He played some LF in college. Bat certainly doesn’t play well there.
Where can I go to keep an eye on how Freese is doing in the GCL?
Cardzfanbub – Baseball America keeps up-to-date stats of all minor league teams. Just go to the site, click on “Stats and Scores” at the top, and click on St. Louis. All our affiliates are listed, and you can check out the stats there.
Lynn is starting to grow on me more and more with every start.
Pickle, over at Cards Talk, put it in laymen’s terms for me… he’s probably not going to dominate an opponant, but he’ll keep you in the game (paraphrasing of course).
Surprised at how little reaction there’s been from Duncan’s comments. Didn’t lboros think he was the one with the “there’s very little down there” shot earlier. So ready for a regime change.
I have a question about the layout of the site. I know it was asked if it should be made simpler, and since then all posts are on the left side of my screen, with both narrow columns on the right. This happens on both Opera and Safari for me. Is this intentional? FWIW, it does seem to load a bit faster, since the outside columns no longer jump around before the page is done loading. Thanks.
I think Duncan was trying to be sarcastic…..he said is there so little down there that the Red Sox’s wouldn’t take a minor leaguer to get rid of Lugo. He was making the point that someone in the organization did want little Duncan out
whatever happened to picklefork…i feel like he hasn’t been around here in a while
Matthew Adams needs a promotion…he is better than rookie ball
that high school first baseman that we drafted this year, reminded me of scruggs a bit…where is he playing…GCL?
erik – I think everyone here realizes Dunc is just a bitter old man.
Interesting that Glaus didn’t play either of Memphis’ double-header games…
I thought I saw some reports that Glaus was experiencing some back spasms… but right now I can’t find the link
Prediction.. the Dunc trade is a precursor to open up an outfield spot for a soon to be obtained player. Maybe Dunn will ride home on the Cardianals’ plane. Frankly I hope that Lugo goes away in the deal.
Final words on Dunc. I always liked watching him play. He was all ball player all the time but noone ever needed a change of scenery more.
Strauss had the original twitter about the back spasm.
Those type of comments from Duncan are exactly why all of the fans were calling out the nepotism card. He really just proved what everyone was arguing about. It is definitely not his job to comment on moves the GM makes, especially when they don’t involve his pitching staff. And considering it involved his own son, it would have been more professional for him to decline to comment on it at all.
I think we all knew this might be coming anyway but this certainly looks like Duncan won’t be back next year. I don’t think he’s a big enough baby to quit mid-year especially when we’re looking like a solid contender, but I don’t see him wanting to be back after this year. Whether or not LaRussa feels the same way, I don’t know. I bet LaRussa didn’t like it, but he seems to be smart enough not to make public comments like this. Moreover, LaRussa is more concerned about the team I would hope, and I would think he could see how this move would help out the team this year.
I’m still waiting for a LaRussa incindiary comment…it’s coming
strong contender, eh? i wish…the astros series has sapped my hope…but a sweep of the phils will bring it all back!
so erik, your tweets are scaring me…mateo may not be 16? Miller saying 4 million or bust? goold’s article makes it seem like miller is as open to goint to college as signing, which i thought wasn’t the case(i was under the impression he really wanted to sign, and college was a last resort)…thoughts?
Reply to gobirds. If Lance Lynn turns into a league average pitcher how keeps his team in games giving them a shot and eating innings (ala Jeff Suppan) that’s a valuable commodity for the cost controlled years. But how many of those guys can one rotation have? Mort is another guy in that mold. They are Dave Duncan guys. This is why I so much liked the Shelby Miller pick. But can we sign him? Here is a list of 1st round picks who have signed (not sure when list last updated).
http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2009/06/list-of-first-round-draft-picks-to-sign.html
How can we cough huge $s on a 16 year old, untested latin kid and not sign Miller?
jjray … the only picks who will sign before Aug. is the ones who will sign for slot or slightly over it. I never thought Miller would sign for slot, so I won’t be concerned until Aug. 16.
@jjray
Well the way i look at it is that you’ve got a true ace in carp, a solid #2 in waino (#1 on some teams), and then after that solid guys.
I’ll glady take 3 Suppans after carp and wainwright, especially if they are cost-controlled.
Yeah, I know Wade. But I’m still nervous. Miller is that young stud starter Cardinal fans have dreaming about since Anthony Reyes went up in smoke.
