I’ll have my take on the Matt Holliday trade and more sometime in the next couple days. This trade has so many subplots to it. It has a huge impact on the farm system. It has meaning for Shelby Miller. It says a lot about the front office and the coaching staff. There’s a lot to talk about and I want to make sure that I get all my thoughts in a cohesive manner. Bear with me.

A 4+ hour game for Springfield means I’m jumping straight into the DFR.

One quick link from a commenter: Casey Mulligan does a mean thriller routine.

This DFR is brought to you by a really lame Comedy Central Presents Chris Porter. Not funny.

Memphis 6, Omaha 5

  • The first four batters (Tyler Greene, Daniel Descalso, Jarrett Hoffpauir, Allen Craig) drew 8 walks between them.
  • Adam Ottavino allows 5 runs in 5 innings. Part of the problem here – 3 HRs. He struck out 5, walked 4 and allowed 5 hits. Ottavino’s command has completely abandoned him this season. It’s time for a try in the bullpen.
  • Pete Parise struck out the side in a perfect 8th.

Springfield 10, NW Arkansas 12 (12 innings)

  • Jim Rapoport was 1-for-4 with 3 walks.
  • Troy Glaus was 2-for-5 with a pair of walks.  Glaus was dogging it during parts of the game especially on a couple of foul balls.  That said, I didn’t see any issues swinging the bat. Turns out he cusses in Springfield just like St. Louis also.
  • Arnoldi ‘Tony’ Cruz, Steve Hill and Andrew Brown both had 2 hits including a homerun.
  • Pete Kozma was 0-for-5 with 3 strikeouts and 1 walk.
  • Colt Sedbrook was 3-for-6.
  • Brandon Dickson allowed 7 hits allowing 4 runs (all in the 2nd after SFG had gone up by 4 — promote him to STL).
  • Fernando Salas pitched 2 scoreless frames with 2 walks and 1 K.
  • Tyler Norrick and Francisco Samuel both strugged with command allowing 1 ER and 3 ER respectively.
  • Eduardo Sanches, also not particularly sharp, struck out 2, walked 1 and allowed a hit in 1.1 IP.
  • Marco Gonzalez pooed the bed in the 12th allowing 4 runs (3 earned).

Springfield update in the morning. I have a ton of notes on the game and I’ll have reports on several of the players next week after I get to watch them a bit more. NW Arkansas is up 12-9 in the 13th after 4.5 hours. See you in the morning.

Palm Beach 10, Daytona 16

  • Adron “In My” Chambers went 2-for-5 with a triple.
  • Charles Cutler goes 3-for-4 with a double and a walk. He’s hitting .375.
  • Curt Smith goes 2-for-5 with a double and a HR.
  • Oliver Marmol goes 2-for-4 with a triple.
  • David Kopp was lit up for 7 runs in 4 ER. He walked 3 and allowed 6 hits striking out 1. Gotta wonder if the shoulder is 100%.

Quad Cities 8, West Michigan 4 (7 innings)

Batavia 2, Jamestown 1 (10 innings)

  • D’Marcus Ingram was 3-for-5 with a double and a triple.
  • Rude Rodriguez was 2-for-4.
  • Scott Schneider struck out 8 allowing just 3 hits in 5 scoreless frames.
  • Joe Kelly picked up the win with 1.2 innings. 1 hit, 1 K, 1BB

Johnson City 0, Princeton 12

  • Richard Racobaldo was 2-for-3. Raco is now hitting 410 in JC.
  • JC had 4 fielding errors.
  • Jason Novak struck out 3 retiring 4 batters. Let’s pretend that’s the only pitcher that was in the game, ok?
  • Andrew Moss allowed 4 runs (3 ER) and Reynier Gonzalez got lit up for 8 runs (4 earned).

Cohesiveness is so overrated AZ. Knee-jerk is how I roll, and it is THE way to roll.

I agree with the more sober reactions about the trade thus far. However, somehow I’m a fan of the Cards’ farm system (and this site, by proxy) separate from the Cards themselves. So half of me is ecstatic seeing Holliday bat behind Pujols, the same way I was excited to see Jimmy, Scotty, and Big Mac in the lineup after their respective trades.

And the other half is in mourning. Damn you FR! This was much easier when I was one of the ignorant rubes who knew nothing about the farm system.

Looking forward to the write-up, Robot.

What are the thoughts on who will be replacing Wallace and Mort in Memphis and Peterson in Springfield?

  4. Tomm says:

    Fantastic footage of mulligan!

  5. cariocacardinal says:

Any feel for whether Schneider could be a sleeper? Better stats than Morty had at Batavia when he was promoted. Good ground ball ratio as well.

  6. HL says:

Rude Rodriguez? Did he do something to you?

  7. sluhser says:

Major props to the Colin Porter reference. Was looking at the 2004 roster out of nostalgia and had no recollection which I attributed to two months in Europe that summer, which were not the months he played. However my father, who claims he watched the most baseball of his life that summer (since my mom and me were gone for a good two months), also claims he didn’t play that year meaning “he didn’t exist.”

So, the great Colin Porter remains a Cardinal in forever obscurity until someone can mention a single detailed memory of him playing.

  8. sluhser says:

You actually said Chris Porter, making Colin Porter all that more obscure.

  9. nmstar says:

Robert Stock hasn’t played in several days. Does anyone know if he is injured?

  10. BigJawnMize says:

I just want to make my point that this trade means that they will sign Miller. (Maybe a little wishful thinking.) But we are looking at potentially having 6 first round picks next year (Holliday 2, Glaus 2, Derosa 1, our own 1) if they don’t sign Miller it would be another pick making seven. That is just nuts. Derosa, if he plays well from here, has an outside chance of making a type A free agent as well, a lot of injured players between him and the bottom of the A tier-that would be eight first rounders.

    • BigJawnMize says:

Also Miller is sitting at a B. Franklin is sitting at an A. Wellemeyer is a B (I doubt they offer them arb).

  11. cariocacardinal says:

Glauss will rate 2 picks after missing all that time?

  12. jjray says:

I can’t see us offering arb to Glaus.

  13. burt says:

Glaus is still listed as a Type A but the Cards won’t offer him arbitration – he makes $12.5M this year and would probably get a raise. No way he gets an offer as strong on the open market. Hopefully they can flip him to an AL team needing a 1B before the deadline. The team has an option on Franklin for $2.75M for 2010 that will get picked up.

Also, Jo-EL isn’t quite a Type B yet but I would assume he’ll be there at the end of the season.

  14. BigJawnMize says:

If Glaus comes back and plays well–do you not think we would offer him. Plus defender with a good bat. I thought with arbitration that the minimum number that the club had to offer was 80% of the previous years offer. That is about 10 million before negotiation. I think that there is a chance that 10M is the best offer. Do you think Glaus is worth 10M???

    • BigJawnMize says:

And I am wrong. There is no minimum on how low you can offer free agents that accept arbitration. So you could offer $.01 if you thought that was what he was worth.

  15. cards13 says:

I believe there is a minimum you have to offer guys that you offer arbitration to. FA’s can be offered whatever you want to pay them.

Also, I can see the Cards offering Glaus as long as they believe he can play 3rd. If he accepts, then you have your third baseman, if not, you get 2 picks, sign DeRosa or bring up Freese, if he’s ready.

  16. bookerd says:

Went to my first QC game last night – Thomas didn’t look bad pitching, defense didn’t help him. Garcia and Castellanos looked good at the top of the lineup, both had SB’s. Man Edwards is a big dude. Plan on checking them out again tonight against the Loons.

I wondered the same thing about Stock nmstar

  17. lassie01 says:

I thought the minimum you could offer a player in arb was 80% of his current salary although I could be wrong.

It would be nice to get a nice pitching prospect from San Fran for Glaus.

  18. Clark says:

Love the Colin Porter reference, I still remember the game where he got a pinch hit in extra innings in Houston, and then Luna suicide squeezed him home for the go ahead run. It was in April but still a big win.

  19. Bob says:

Meanwhile, down in the Dominican, 17-year-old shortstop Grabby Hernandez snapped his hitless streak at 18. He went just 1-3, but also drew a pair of walks, stole his 17th base in 19 attempts, and turned a triple play–to go along with a boring old double play.

Hernandez still has an OPS of .915, with a fine 22/28 BB/K ratio. Very encouraging so far. ;)

Also, in the Appy, teen centerfielder Michael Swinson returned to action, going 1-4. His line so far? A robust .315/.406/.519, with a firm 8/12 BB/K. He keeps it up, he’s definitely a top 20 Redbird prospect.
