Meanwhile, down in the Dominican, 17-year-old shortstop Grabby Hernandez snapped his hitless streak at 18. He went just 1-3, but also drew a pair of walks, stole his 17th base in 19 attempts, and turned a triple play–to go along with a boring old double play.

Hernandez still has an OPS of .915, with a fine 22/28 BB/K ratio. Very encouraging so far. ;)

Also, in the Appy, teen centerfielder Michael Swinson returned to action, going 1-4. His line so far? A robust .315/.406/.519, with a firm 8/12 BB/K. He keeps it up, he’s definitely a top 20 Redbird prospect.

Love the Colin Porter reference, I still remember the game where he got a pinch hit in extra innings in Houston, and then Luna suicide squeezed him home for the go ahead run. It was in April but still a big win.

I thought the minimum you could offer a player in arb was 80% of his current salary although I could be wrong.

It would be nice to get a nice pitching prospect from San Fran for Glaus.

Went to my first QC game last night – Thomas didn’t look bad pitching, defense didn’t help him. Garcia and Castellanos looked good at the top of the lineup, both had SB’s. Man Edwards is a big dude. Plan on checking them out again tonight against the Loons.

I believe there is a minimum you have to offer guys that you offer arbitration to. FA’s can be offered whatever you want to pay them.

Also, I can see the Cards offering Glaus as long as they believe he can play 3rd. If he accepts, then you have your third baseman, if not, you get 2 picks, sign DeRosa or bring up Freese, if he’s ready.

And I am wrong. There is no minimum on how low you can offer free agents that accept arbitration. So you could offer $.01 if you thought that was what he was worth.

If Glaus comes back and plays well–do you not think we would offer him. Plus defender with a good bat. I thought with arbitration that the minimum number that the club had to offer was 80% of the previous years offer. That is about 10 million before negotiation. I think that there is a chance that 10M is the best offer. Do you think Glaus is worth 10M???

Glaus is still listed as a Type A but the Cards won’t offer him arbitration – he makes $12.5M this year and would probably get a raise. No way he gets an offer as strong on the open market. Hopefully they can flip him to an AL team needing a 1B before the deadline. The team has an option on Franklin for $2.75M for 2010 that will get picked up.

Also, Jo-EL isn’t quite a Type B yet but I would assume he’ll be there at the end of the season.
