This is the second of the bi-weekly GCL updates. Keep in mind that these stats are to be ingested with a grain of salt as the GCL is the most informal of all American minor leagues.

So, with that in mind, I’ll check in on three “names” on the GCL roster, three players who have played well and three players who have played not so well.

The GCL Cardinals have gone 10-13 so far on the year, they are in 4th place in the GCL “East” Division.

Three Stars:

1. Virgil Hill “Quicksilver Jr.” – 2009 6th Round OF – He started out hot, but has only hit .179 over his past 10 games, but still sports a .400 slugging % for the year.

2. Roberto De La Cruz – 2008 July 2nd $1.1 Million Bonus 3B – 121/197/121 is all you have to say. He’s 17 and still young for this level and has plenty of time to catch up, but that is not a great start. He got his first professional extra-base hit with a double on July 19th.

3. Hector Hernandez – 2009 10th Round LHP – Hector has 13 hits allowed in 9.2 innings for a 5.59 ERA. But, he does have 12 Ks to 3 walks, which is a good sign for his development.

Three Up:

1. Kleininger Teran – 3B – This 19 year old was signed out of Venezuela in 2006 and is repeating the GCL this year. He is slashing .409/.426/.515

2. Patrick Daugherty – 20 strikeouts to 8 walks in 17 innings and a 2.08 ERA.

3. Jonathan Rodriguez – Jrod Part Deux leads the team in OBP at .459 and is hitting .364 over the past 10 games.

Honorable Mention: Cale Johnson has 14 Ks and 2 walks in 12 innings so far.

Three Down:

1. Amaury Castillo – RHP from the Dominican Republic has walked 16 and struck out 10 in 15.1 innings so far.

2. Tyler Bighames has been playing OF mostly for the GCL Cardinals and struggling so far to the tune of 185/267/259

3. Catcher Kevin Moscatel is hitting .059 over his past 10 apperances and is 4/31 on the year.

Anyone else you think that is up / down on the year so far for the GCL? Let’s hear it.

I know Cale Johnson. I actually played against. He’s a good pitcher with good stuff. One to watch.

  2. Swirls says:

Good to see Daugherty pitching well – wasn’t he the JuCo draft pick (somewhere between rounds 11 and 15) that had like a 9.50 ERA this year?
