My last night in Springfield brings another ugly blowout to the S-Cardinals. Tomorrow night you’ll have a surprise DFR writer as I make my way back to the St. Louis area.

Palm Beach was postponed and Johnson City was suspended. Late night double header for Memphis as well — I’ll have game 2 details in the morning.

This DFR is brought to you by the new Comedy Central Presents Jim Breuer.

Memphis 2, New Orleans 1 (Game 1: 7 innings)

  • Memphis totals 5 hits (2 doubles) and Brian Barden was the only one to reach base twice with a pair of walks.
  • Daniel Descalso was walked and committed just his second error in Memphis.
  • PJ Walters says that he doesn’t need a good fastball. In 6 innings he strikes out an astonishing 14, walking just 1 and allowing 3 hits. He had 1 unearned run under his watch. I’m not a Walters advocate but his fastball has picked up a few ticks and he continues to perform well in AAA.
  • Jess Todd picks up his 24th save with a scoreless frame. 1 hit, 1K and 1 BB. Why is he not in St. Louis??? Let the Jess Todd era begin. Todd is easily one of the Cardinals 5 best right handed relievers. When the Cardinals are in dire need of a pitcher with command, Jess Todd makes a lot of sense. The Cardinals should be looking for the same shot in the arm they got out of Motte last year.

Memphis 6, New Orleans 1 (Game 2: 7 innings)

  • Tyler Greene was 2-for-4 with a homerun.
  • Daniel Descalso was 0-for-4 with 3 strikeouts.  Expecting him to be ready by 2010 seems like we’re asking a lot.  Need to spend some time with the Memphis video watching him.
  • Allen Craig was 3-for-4 with a HR. In case you missed it, he’s hitting .389 over the last 10 games with 6 HRs.  He’s at 14 bombs on the year and has raised his season OPS over .800.  I feel like every week I’m waiting for him to break out.  Maybe this time he will.
  • Khalil Greene was 2-for-4 with a HR.
  • Oneli Perez and Ian Oustland combined to shut down the New Orleans offense.  They allowed just 1 run on 5 hits and 2 walks striking out 8.

Springfield 3, NW Arkansas 12

  • David Freese was 2-for-4.
  • Troy Glaus was 0-for-3 with a walk.
  • Steve Hill took a ball 386′ big fly.
  • Ryan Kulik struck out 7 in 6 innings of work allowing 3 earned runs. He walked just one allowing 6 hits.
  • Eddie Degerman allowed 7 runs retiring just 1 batter. To say that his command is bad would be an insult to Blake King.
  • This game was so out of hand and the Cardinals were so short on relievers after last nights 4.5+ hour game that they sent in Mike Folli for the last 2 outs. Mike is an infielder. I’m relatively certain I was the only one in my 50′ radius that knew that. When he booted a ball hit back towards his right, I made sure to let him know from the stands. That said, I was very thankful to see Mike Folli after watching Eddie Degerman throw meatballs and pitches out of the zone.

Quad Cities 5, Great Lakes 4 (11 innings)

Batavia 0, State College 8

  • Batavia mustered just 4 hits.
  • Deryk Hooker took the loss allowing 4 ER over 4 innings of work. He was tagged for 5 hits and 3 walks while striking out 2.
  • Andres Rosales pitched 1 inning allowing a solo shot and walking 1.

Jim Breuer is not funny thus far. And for what it’s worth, Brett Wallace debuted at 3B tonight for A’s affiliate in Sacramento. He’s currently 1-for-2.

Does anyone know anything about John De Aguas….17 year old lefty from the vsl. He’s putting up outstanding numbers 28 innings 23 strikeouts 14 hits 11 BB and a 0.00 Era.

  2. Vallon says:

Now that mort is no longer in the Memphis rotation, do you think that the redbirds will put Todd back in the rotation, keep that perez guy starting, or promote somebody like hearne or Lynn from Springfield ?

  3. Andrew says:

Are the Cardinals allowed to bring up any of the people on the PTBNL list before Cleveland makes there pick?

  4. Grant says:

QC over Great Lakes in 110 innings? You’d think after playing that long, the score would be higher than 5-4.

In Game 2 of the DH, Allen Craig went 3-4 with another HR. He’s on an absolute tear right now.

I watched part of the Jim Breuer special too. You’re right, it wasn’t that good. The only funny part was his impression of 80′s rockers singing kid’s songs.

    • azruavatar says:

I’ll consider this your application to be our copy editor.

The Breuer special was better towards the end but it was one of the weaker overall CC Presents

  5. JEM says:

My opinion on why Jess Todd isn’t up: He’ll soon be a Cleveland Indian and management knows if we were to call him up and he pitched well, it would be like losing an impact player when the Indians take him.

But, if he’s not on that PTBNL list, there is no reason why he shouldn’t be up with the big club.

  6. sadsushi says:

can joe straus hate on the cardinals farm system any more? a couple quotes from his recent article

“Mozeliak remains sensitive to criticism of a player development system ranked No. 8 by Baseball America this year.

“The system’s elite prospects, classified by Post-Dispatch columnist Bernie Miklasz as “the Faberge Eggs” because of their fragile, untouchable status, are increasingly referred to internally as “the rotten eggs.”

clearly baseball america doesn’t know what they are talking about..i’m pretty freaking tired of joe straus and his hatred for the overhyped(according to him) farm system…at least bernie gave jeff luhnow a small amount of credit in his article about the trade …ok..end of rant

how about p.j. walters? i wish tony and duncan could realize that some starters don’t work well in the bullpen and i’d say p.j. walters would be in that category

  7. tom s. says:

Vallon – my guess is hearne. He’s coming up on his rule 5 eligibility. If he’s on the memphis roster he can only be taken to the ML roster of another club. If he stays at Spfld another club could stash him at aaa.

Who wants to bet descalso starts at least as many games at 3b as at 2b over the rest of the season?

And azru, I have to think todd is much better than kinney right now. I think they might call up a long inning man after a couple of rough bullpen days. The hawk and todd up? Brad and kinney down? My best guess.

  8. Kazahkstanny Danny says:

Is Jess Todd not in the big leagues, due to the fact that he’s the PTBNL? Thats gotta be my best guess.

  9. Swirls says:

    Tom,

I’m confused as to your comment about Hearne. He’ll be Rule V eligible this winter, as he was a 2006 college draft pick. If the Cardinals do not protect him by placing him on their 40 man roster and he is plucked by another team, he must remain on their 25 man roster with the MLB club for the entire season. This holds true for whether that player was previously in AAA, A-, or the GCL.

  10. bookerd says:

I would much rather see Todd up than Kinney. I bet they promote Todd or Hawk after all the bullpen innings yesterday. Actually Descallo has been playing 1st base at Memphis since the Hof is back. I think Memphis has 5 starters – Hawk, Boggs, PJ, Adam O, and MacLane. I only reason Perez started was because of the doubleheader. Khali Greene also hit a home run in the second game of the doubleheader.

Jared Bogany was the hero for the River Bandits – after striking out 3 times in his first 3 at-bats. He drove in the tying run in the bottom of the ninth with a base hit. The in the 11th inning he hit a sac fly to drive in the winning run.

Kyle Russell went deep for the 23rd time for the Loons and Dee Gordon, the Loon’s speedy SS (55 SB’s) and son of Tom “Flash” Gordon, looked very shaky at short. He made his 29th error and bobble a couple of others but still was able to make outs.

  11. Kelley says:

Your sense of humor is lacking any degree of being funny. Your job should be to give updates in the Cardinal farm systems…..not to replace Jay Leno. These players are professional athletes who are trying to become major league players, and they deserve some respect. If they weren’t thought of as “good prospects” to help make the Cardinals stronger, then I assume they would not have been drafted. Blake King is a perfect example of what I am talking about. Every report that I read from you about Blake King involves the descriptive adjective “Bad” being used. One day soon, he will be pitching in the Major Leagues, and your new comments will be that his Jerky…Maximum Effort…Effectively Wild pitching mechanics have made him successful and un-hittable …..and no longer “Bad”. Blake King leads his team or is near the top in WINS….ERA…WHIP….K’S PER INNING PITCHED….HR’S GIVEN UP….HITS PER INNING ALLOWED….OPPONENTS BATTING AVERAGE….Blake does have too many walks but he still has a better ratio than most of the other pitchers in the organization.

  12. Shi says:

Maybe azruavatar can write what he wants. it is his website (or erik’s, you know what i mean). and i like the humor, personally.

  13. Wade says:

@Swirls … There is a minor league phase of the rule 5 draft also.

“Organizations may draft players from AA or lower to play for their AAA affiliates (for $12,000) and may draft players from A teams or lower to play for their AA affiliates (for $4,000).”

Got that from wikipedia, but I have seen it confirmed on other sites as well.

  14. cardsfan1 says:

Hawk was called up, Kinney sent down.

Swirls–I believe Tom is correct about rule V and it where another team has to put a player they pick up does indeed depend on where they were this last season.

Kelley–you need to put things into perspective. Does anything that is said on here really affect anything with regard to if/when a player is called up or how the organization views them? It is the same with Baseball America and other similar websites. I was once in your shoes but you need to learn to let it go.

  15. PJ says:

I was thinking yesterday—-who will be the starting 3B for the big club next year? We seem to have a variety of internal options.

    Mather, Descalsco, Freese, Craig

    I am betting on a DD/Freese platoon

  16. Mike says:

Kelley, unless you’re Blake’s dad or agent, remember rule number one:

    Do not disrespect the DFRs.

If you don’t like them, please spend your time exclusively at milb.com. The DFRs almost didn’t happen this year, and I, for one, enjoy them.

Now, can we get back to poking fun at Gary Daley and his three inning scoreless streak? Thank you.

  17. Paper Lions says:

@Kelly, actually a lot of players are drafted to be “organizational guys”, and are not considered prospects at all. True, some of them become prospects, but the vast majority of players in the minors are not prospects…they are just guys for the prospects to play against during their development.

  18. tom s. says:

Dear Kelley – we all anxiously await the. day blake king plays in the bigs. Order your jerseys now folks.

  19. Wade says:

is that a three inning scoreless streak or three hitter scoreless streak?

  20. jjray says:

@Kelly. This is a fan website. Fans post here for their own enjoyment and entertainment. Sorry but I think you missed that point. And don’t we all take ourselves too seriously in life. A little levity is most welcome. BTW, I wish Blake King the best in his future career. Seriously. The odds are very much against him.

  21. cardsfan1 says:

Jess Todd was the PTBNL for Clevland.

  22. sadsushi says:

i don’t like the DeRosa trade now.. not worth trading 2 good, cheap relievers for someone they will likely lose in the offseason

  23. Zach says:

Well….now that we have cleaned out our system of almost every exciting prospect, time to find the guys “flying under the radar”. Tear.

  24. Wade says:

another 40 man roster spot open for this coming up offseason.

  25. Tom says:

I’m thinking Glaus is going to have to fetch us a decent relief prospect to replace Todd at this point.

  26. JC says:

This really puts even more emphasis on signing Miller IMO. If you get Mateo and Miller in your farm that helps with the upper end talent restocking of the system. THe only problem is as they are both upper end talents they are many years away. So we need some other underachievers in our system to step up to play a more significant role. We did clean our alot of talent…but I believe in Luhnow and his dedication to the farm. So I think we can restock fairly quickly…we are much deeper system now than we were 3-4 years ago.

  27. Wade says:

I’m not sold on Glaus getting us anything special in return. Also not sold that his shoulder is back at full strength enough for him to even just DH. Isn’t his max rehab time about to end? Might be wrong, but I thought the most time a position player could be on rehab was 30 days once he activated to start rehab (not counting rookie ball days maybe).

  28. Illinoiscardsfan says:

So the answer to why the Cardinals continued to have Todd closing at AAA if he was one of the players Cleveland could take, is that he was the player the Cardinals wanted Cleveland to take.

  29. tom s. says:

    Wow. So long jess.

  30. southeast redbird says:

    Kelly,
Keep in mind when reading comments on FR, that the only opinions that really count are those that employ the players. :)

  31. Mike says:

Maybe if we pay the rest of Glaus’ salary, we can get a bucket to go with the balls in return.

  32. PJ says:

    @Mike

Your comments seem to be another example of a Cards fan undervaluing his team’s players. I wonder what Chris Duncan was worth to you

I would classify Julio Lugo as more than a bucket of balls. If Glaus gets us nothing more than a solid change of scenery guy (another team’s Duncan), we might have something to work with. I would think that he could bring a nice prospect or 2 (not of Perez and Todd’s talent, but relatively close). He is coming off a 25+ HR season. He has some real value in the AL.
