Two debutant pitchers for the system today. Trey Hearne is in Memphis and Nick Additon is in Springfield.

Just in case you were living under a rock, Mitch Boggs is up to St. Louis to take the rotation spot from Todd Wellemeyer. Which is why the two debutants had to move up. I love the word debutants.

Memphis 14, Round Rock 5

  • Trey Hearne was the better of the men making their debuts. He struck out 6 and walked 1. He gave up 3 runs on 3 home runs. He pitched 7 innings.
  • Charlie Manning pitched an inning.
  • Josh Kinney pitched an inning, but struggled.
  • Today was all about the offense for Memphis.
  • Jon Jay was 5-6 with a HR, an RBI and 4 runs scored. Does he see encouragement in the thinning of the organizational OF ranks?
  • Tyler Greene was 3-4 with 2 HRs.
  • Allen Craig was 3-5 with 2 HRs himself. He had 3 RBIs. He was in left.
  • Khalil Greene also hit 2 HRs.
  • Jarrett Hoffpauir had 2 hits and 2 RBIs.

Springfield 0, Regular Arkansas 8

  • The Springfield Cardinals got only 1 hit on the night.
  • That hit was a double by Andrew Brown.
  • Nick Additon had the down side of the twin cores of debuts. He had 9 walks in 3.2 innings, ouch.
  • Marco Gonzalez stranded 2 of Additon’s runners and pitched 3.1 innings in total.
  • Francisco Samuel pitched a shutout inning.

Palm Beach 1, Lakeland 5

Quad Cities was suspended in the 4th up 2-0.

Batavia 0, Mahoning Valley 3

  • Michael Blazek took the hard luck loss with 1 run ( 0 earned). He struck out 6 in 5 innings.
  • Scott Schneider struck out 4 in 3 innings work.
  • Joe Kelly allowed 2 runs (1 earned) in the final inning.
  • Luis De La Cruz, Alan Ahmady and Beau Riportella had the only three hits of the day. 1 each.

Johnson City was postponed.

Welcome to Double-A Nick Additon. While it’s just one start and I hardly expect him to walk the house every outing, I thought AA would put to bed all the “Additon is a good prospect” talk.

  2. Clark says:

Okay sorry if this was addressed, but where is daryl “DJ Tools” jones? He looked pretty good in the futures game.

    • erik says:

      1. He’s on the DL, I think it has something to do with something with his leg, he’s been dealing with injuries all season long.
      2. Mind your English, hombre. Comments edited to keep it PG..

  3. Kyle says:

Hes on the DL Clark. Hes been bothered by a Knee Injury for most of the year.

  4. Tomm says:

    Corresponding roster move?…Thompson to Memphis?

  5. HL says:

How is Blake King still in the organization?

    • HL says:

Ok, maybe that was a bit harsh but the guy is a walk machine. He hands them out like they are free passes.

      Hey, wait a minute…

  6. Mike says:

Remember when Craig, Hoff, and Jay couldn’t hit their way out of a wet sack in the first half? Nice to see them come around in a big way.

WTH is the big club going to do with the Greenes?

Additon now fits nicely with the rest of the walk-crazy Springfield club.

  7. Pierce says:

I think it’s about time for Craig to replace Stavinoha. Dude is killing the ball.

    • HL says:

No sense right now in just having Craig come up and sit, in my opinion.

He should have been called up before we dealt Chris Perez and Jess Todd to Cleveland.

  8. FreeRedbird says:

    @Tomm,

I’d rather DFA Wellemeyer, but I expect Hawksworth sent to Memphis. If they want to return to 13 man pitching staff, then Stavinoha will be demoted.

  9. Memphis25 says:

HL seems like your rewriting history a bit there, Craig was on DL and hitting .268 with 8 HR and 29 RBI at time of the trade in 257 AB and had only 18 BB to 54 strikeouts why should he got called up? He then went 4-for-20 with 1 XBH from when he got back from DL to Triple-A All-Star break and has been on fire since.

Craig had a line of .264/.321/.394/.715 in the first half with a HR every 34.62 AB’s and XBH every 13.85 AB, now to start the 2nd half he is at 5.98 AB per HR already over his first half total in homers and half hits hits going for a extra base over the 14 game span!

  10. Shaneo69 says:

+1 on keeping Craig and T. Greene at Memphis to play everyday rather than have them up in the bigs collecting dust.

One nice thing about all the trades is that Tony finally has a set lineup and is only using two guys off the bench (Colby & Lugo) so we don’t have to put up with Duncan, Thurston, and Stavinoha starting anymore. So I’m fine with Thurston staying on the team over Craig since Thurston never plays anyway.

Addition will crash and burn at AA. The couple times I have seen him in person everyone but the Major League potential hitters had a hard time squaring him up. I A ball you are only seeing a Major League Prospect for maybe 6 at-bats a game. He was able to work around those hitters.

  12. Bob says:

Blake King was doing alright out of the bullpen (wild, yes, but nearly unhittable, with a .152 average against, lots of strikeouts, and zero longballs over 40+ innings). Why they couldn’t leave well enough alone and keep him exclusively in relief is beyond me.

I wonder if K. Greene has *some* trade value, assuming the Cards eat all his salary?

Dumb question: are the Birds on the hook for Julio Lugo’s 2010 paycheck? It’s $9MM, but Jeff Gordon mentioned in passing the other day that Lugo was “free”, or words to that effect.

  13. cariocacardinal says:

Someone needs to get an eyeball report on Schneider – the dude is dominating at Batavia like no other pitcher in recent memory.

  14. VinegarBend says:

@Bob The Birds are not on the hook for Julio Lugo’s 2010 paycheck. Part of the Duncan deal was that Boston would pay Lugo’s remaining salary for ’09 and ’10.

  15. go birds says:

    What’s the story on Blazek?

  16. Bob says:

    Thanks, Mr. Mizell.

  17. Kelley says:

I agree with Bob in that Blake King should have been left alone. Blake has been in the bullpen for 2 years and has been used to throwing 20-40 pitches per assignment. Before the all star break, Blake had an ERA of under 1.50, and then the manager started changing Blake’s role to include some “Spot Starts” which meant that his pitch count doubled or tripled without preparation or warning. During those “Spot Starts”, Blake has given up around 9 walks and 7 runs and his ERA has jumped to 3.47. If Blake had a chance to become a starter, I might understand, but that is not the case. Too many walks…Yes…Too many coaches changes…YES!! I am still not giving up on a kid who has 82 K’s in 62 innings against 32 hits and 24 ER’s.

  18. A1R3Z says:

You keep on using that word…. I do not think it means what you think it means.
    /Spanish accent

Craig is doing very well. As far as his not getting called up anytime soon, what gives? I look at his Fangraphs page and can’t find anything. Sure, DeRosa seems to have filled the hole that Craig could have. But that being said, I wonder why he hasn’t been involved in any of the trade talks? He’s doing well enough.

I have a feeling that both Glaus and K. Greene aren’t going to contribute much, and won’t get traded. I’m afraid we’re just going to have to make those a couple of sunk costs on the ol’ balance sheet and bid them good luck in their future endeavors at the end of the year.

Who’s the closer in AAA now? Does Samuel still not have the command/control to warrant the callup? Or did they give it to Kinney when he was optioned down? Or is it by committee?

  19. tom s. says:

I think we should look for jay and craig to get a september callup when the rosters expand.jay makes sense both as a defensive replacement and because the club right now has limited lh pinch hitting options (whichever of ankiel/ rasmus doesn’t start, skippy if he doesn’t start, and thurston). If jon keeps hitting, he might see some action. Craig just b/c his bat as a RH PH may be irresistable.

  20. BigJawnMize says:

I am wondering if it isn’t time to get stock up to A ball early. I would think under normal circumstances they would mimic the Niko schedule of promoting him with two weeks left, but they really need to see if this guy can hit at higher levels to make a determination as to his position.

  21. VolsnCards5 says:

i’m kinda happy they left lynn in AA…i was worried they would call him up when boggs was promoted(seems like a logical move)…but i think i’d just a soon see lynn finish out the year in AA and start next season in the AAA rotation

    FREE ALLEN CRAIG

  22. David says:

I think we should leave Jay and Craig at Memphis, but I am ok with a September call up. I think Craig’s last shot at making the club will come in Spring Training. If he doesn’t make it then he should be packaged in a trade so he has a shot at a career. It will be interesting to see how Craig, Freese, and Mather all compete next Spring. They are all getting old and need to make a move.

I see Jay as potentially following a similar path as Shumaker (minus moving to 2nd base). If he can stick he might just hit his way into playing time, plus he is great in the field.
