Helping my robot friend out, I’m putting up a placeholder DFR for tonight so he doesn’t have to recap the Memphis (G1), Palm Beach and Batavia games:

Memphis 5, Round Rock 2 (Game 1)

  • Allen Craig should be with the big league club. There, I said it. We probably mismanaged things a bit giving away a ton of talent for DeRosa or Holliday where Craig might have been able to be league average or better. Craig went 2-for-3 with a solo HR.
  • Mark Hamilton did the same thing. A Daric Barton if I’ve ever seen one.
  • Shane Robinson drove in 3 with his 2-for-3 night.
  • PJ Walters must have ditched the slider in tonight’s game. He struck out half of the 26 batters he faced, getting 13 of the 21 outs he needed via the strikeout. Six of the other outs came via groundout. He gave up 2 ERs on 4 hits and 2 BBs.

Batavia 1, Eastwood Mall Scrappers 2

Palm Beach 3, Dunedin Mifflin 0

Memphis 5, Round Rock 3 (Game 2)

Springfield 5, NW Arkansas 3

  • Steve Hill was 2-for-4 with a double and a HR.
  • Jim Rapoport goes 2-for-4.
  • Ryan Kulik allowed 3 runs over 6.2 innings. He was tagged for 3 ER on 6 hits and 2 walks. Kulik struck out 2.
  • Eduardo Sanchez struck out 1 and walked 1 over 2 innings.

Quad Cities 7, Wisconsin 0

  • Blake Cawley racked up 3 walks.
  • Osvaldo Morales was 1-for-3 with a walk and a big fly.
  • Aquimedes Nieto struck out 8 over 6 innings allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk. Nieto has struck out nearly 8 per 9 innings. He’s got a better than 3:1 K:BB ratio.
  • Adam Veres struck out 2 in his 2 innings.

Johnson City 7, Bluefield 5

  • Michael Swinson and Raco Racobaldo were both 2-for-3. Swinson walked twice and Raco walked once.
  • Robert Stock was 2-for-5 with a triple and a HR. He’s also trying to steal your girlfdiend. Yes, he’s that good.
  • Anthony Ferrara struck out 4 in 4IP. He allowed 3 ER on 5 hits and 1 walk.

  2. VolsnCards5 says:

    i mean batavia

  3. sadsushi says:

p.j. walters has been most impresssive his last 3 starts…but his last 2 starts he has 27 k’s in 13 innings..pretty impressive , minor leagues or major leagues….his future shouldn’t be in the bullpen, clearly

  4. nmstar says:

Robert Stock was the man (triple, HR) tonight in helping JC get the win. I really hope he can stick at catcher.

  5. Pierce says:

Robert Stock has been a beast. I hope he keeps that up.

  6. mizzoucards529 says:

Does anyone know what the deal was with Francsico Samuel tonight?

Instead of Samuel taking over the ninth for a save opportunity, Eduardo Sanchez pitched both the 8th and 9th to pick up the save.

Sammy shouldnt be tired, since he pitched last on the 28th.

Maybe it was a matchup thing, or who knows, Samuel might not have been feeling well. I didnt hear of any injury prior to today so sorry if something happened and I didnt catch it.

Call me when Stock is doing this in High A this time next year, until then I still think he’s a pitcher.

Free Allen Craig please. Why so we have to waste hot streaks from so many young guys? If anything he could spell DeRosa every couple of days. That Michael Swinson is intriguing me. Just 19 years old and from all reports a great athlete. And yes I realize the irony of praising one 19 year old raking in rookie ball, and then negating the season of another. Its called double think people, look into it. But Swinson does excite me.

Every time PJ pitches, it seems like so many people seem to be ecstatic and start waxing unrealistic about his prospects as a major league pitcher. Then he gets to the major leagues and you see the stuff, and then you end up with the same depressed feeling, knowing he will probably never be a very good major league pitcher, even coming out of the bullpen.

Please sign Shelby Mo, pretty please.

  8. AP5 says:

So why isn’t Wagner Mateo playing yet?

And Mo, sign Shelby, we need another impact prospect in the system.

  9. Kazahkstanny Danny says:

Bye the way, does anyone else find it hard to be excited about Robert Stock, even if he does continue to hit like this and stay at catcher, knowing full well that he has no future with this team as long as Tony LaRussa is the manager, and Yadier Molina is still under contract?

    Darn you run-on sentences.

  10. Grant says:

HL – BA agrees with you on Allen Craig. He checked in at #7 on this week’s Hot Sheet.
    Here is their writeup:

No hitter in baseball has posted better numbers than Craig over the last two weeks. In his last 13 games, Craig has slugged nine home runs, skyrocketing his season numbers from pedestrian up to .293/.349/.497 with 17 home runs in 90 games. Craig’s production has always talked louder than his tools, but at 25, perhaps it’s time to see how his skill set translates against big league pitching.

AP5 – I believe Mateo will continue to work out at the Cardinals’ Dominican academy this season and then start play next year, probably in the Gulf Coast League

I don’t know Danny. I find it hard to get excited about any player in this small of sample. As for the catcher/Larussa situation Molina is only signed thru 2011 with an option for 2012 after which he’ll be thirty years old…I don’t see Stock being a major league starter before 2013, and I definitely don’t see Larussa being the Cards manager in 2013. If Stock continues to impress and ends up an elite prospect I’ll be excited about him whether he plays a game for the Cards or not.

  12. AP5 says:

Grant, thanks for explaining that. I don’t really understand how the whole Latin America talent thing works other than signing a player.

As for Stock, think Brett Wallace. He may not have a long term future with the Cards, but he sure becomes an attractive trading piece should he turn out to be the offensive catcher that the Cardinals think he can be.

  13. jrocke217 says:

samuel is having some control issues that he and the coaching staff are working on. confidence level has dropped. sanchez was an excellent closer coming up in the rookie levels. i’ve made plenty of comments/suggestions that he should be used more as a closer rather than a middle reliever or a starter (like last season). he seems to handle the situation a lot better than many.

mateo’s contract doesn’t start until next season for him to play pro ball. he will be either play in instructional league in florida and/or dominican winter league coming up in sept. cards used a big chunk of change on him, really doubt there was any plans to play him in dsl or gcl this season.

  14. Zach says:

What is in Craig’s future? If Stav gets a chance, certainly he gets a chance, right?

Stock sounds awesome so far. I hope PJ keeps it up…we need pitchers who can get people out at the AAA level

  15. Antho says:

Can’t wait to see Craig get a shot in Sep if not before. His July was off the charts.

  16. themop10 says:

Why is everyone screaming for Craig to be in the majors. He isn’t going to play over DeRosa. When we traded for DeRosa Craig wasn’t hitting that well anyways. Craig a month ago was on the disappointing prospect list. No one remembers that! Leave Craig playing everyday. Let him and Freese compete for a job next spring if we don’t sign DeRosa. If we do sign DeRosa keep one as a bench player and trade the other guy.

I hope Stock sticks at catcher. Isn’t Molina in the second year of a four year deal anyways. There is a lot of time for Stock to develop and Molina to digress. Plus Molina isn’t exactly hitting like he was in April. I love, LOVE Molina’s defense but still think there is a lot of room for improvement at the plate. He has no power and no speed. Unless there are guys in scoring position he isn’t a factor at all.

I still really like our farm system’s ability to produce major league caliber players. We don’t have the impact players we did. But if, THE BIG IF, we resign Holliday we won’t need any more impact players. You have Pujols, Holliday, Ludwick, Rasmus. That’s the core of a great lineup.

  17. jjray says:

@themop10 Craig isn’t a youngster anymore (turned 25 in July). They’ve given Stavinoha extended time in STL this season yet Craig is a better prospect who can play more positions. Craig’s role would be utility infielder / outfielder. The Cards need a power right handed bat on the bench (and a cost controlled one at that). Joe Mather was that guy but he is hurt. Craig is a better option than Stavi in many people’s eyes.

  18. VolsnCards5 says:

@jjray, make that in all people except TLR’s eyes, and i 100% agree with you

  19. sluhser says:

Arqimedes Nieto a legitimate prospect at this point? He looked good the one time I saw him in the WBC albeit still raw (which is to be expected).

  20. themop10 says:

@jjray and Vols – 2 months ago Craig wasn’t the better option than Stav. Stav has been a great pinch hitter and won a few games for us. I am just trying to make the point that this huge uproar over Craig is just because he is hot. Why not let him hit rather than just bring him up to be a pinch hitter when Stav is doing well in that role?

If it was a matter of Thurston starting or Craig I would be screaming for Craig too. But DeRosa is at 3rd so leave Craig in Memphis and let Stav pinch hit since he is having success.

  21. Wade says:

    any reports on Stock’s defense?

  22. VolsnCards5 says:

craig would be a better option as our 5th outfielder than stavinhoa…that is all i am saying
