First of all, in the mess that was the Matt Holliday trade and the havoc that played on my writing schedule — don’t laugh; I have a tenative schedule — the Quad Cities team got missed in the Club Check. I’m aware of it and it’s coming.
Also, I’m working my way through my notes for my three day trip to Springfield. That’s a really beautiful ballpark if you’ve never been. Highly reccommended for a family weekend get away.
Jeff Luhnow tweeted today that they’ll be shuffling rosters to make arrangements for the last month of the minor league season. Around 25 roster moves in the next 24-48 hours. Here’s what we’ve heard so far:
- Aaron Luna to Springfield
- Case Mulligan to Springfield
- David Carpenter to Palm Beach
On to the links!
Matt Baker has a multi-part series detailing the travails of a minor league baseball player. It’s one aspect of the game that’s impossible for us to see in the minor league box scores. There’s a host of issues that play havoc on their lives: travel, language barriers, livable wages, family, etc. As a robot, it’s difficult for me to understand how much this impacts their everyday lives but needless to say it has repercussions.
Justin Fiske, who had a break out 2008 posting a 3.20 FIP at Springfield in 69 innings, is back from the DL.
Sam Freeman, another Springfield lefty, heads to the DL with a sore elbow.
Arquimedes Nieto gets a writeup from the Quad Cities Steve Batterson.
I really can’t say how glad I am to see Allen Craig hitting again. I’ve thought for sometime that he had a ML caliber bat (and glove for that matter) but his slump this year was a mite concerning. He’s been raking in July partnering with PJ Walters to power the Memphis Crew through some impressive wins.

I’m glad to see Craig back to normal as well. Surely we’ll see him a bit in September, but who knows. Walters has been dominating hitters at the lower levels. It’ll be interesting to see how he fairs in his next big league opportunity. It’s hard to say whether he’s a 5th starter in the big leagues or a AAAA player. Maybe he’ll magically gain a couple more tics on his fastball this offseason;)
Eric Fornatro, Xavier Scruggs, D’MArcus Ingram and Ryde Rodriquez are all listed on QC’s roster. From what I can tell Jon Edwards, Travis mitchell and Nick Conley’s names are missing.
Sorry it is Klye Conley and those 3 are now listed on Bativa’s roster
Also it looks like the following have gone from JC to Bativa – Michael Swinson, MAtthew Adams, Justin Smith and Jesse Simpson.
on the roster at palm beach came Morales, Carpenter, Garcia and Nieto. They all got promoted. Funny everyone complainted about poor Niko errors but Garcia had the most fastest errors in QC then Niko did. In just a few games he played he average over 13. But it’s ok because there young and learning. I don’t have a problem with it. Minor leagues is to learn from your mistakes and get better. Im glad the cardinal organization continues to give young players opportunities that is fantastic. Thats why am a cardinal fan Congrats to Luna hope you keep doing well. Nieto deserved it he’s a good pitcher and i’m sure there will be more surprises. You’re right about Conley,Mitchell and Edwards. there not in PB so there properly at Batavia.

Too bad about Mitchell – I went to high school with him. Seems to be unable to put a good season together
I went to parkway west and always see Mitchell at the gym. I was rooting for him too
are you coming to springfield or or leaving? I’d love to sit down and have a beer with you and talk shop… let me know.
