Jaime Garcia made another rehab start, this time in Palm Beach and Luhnow and company were there to twitter the results, naturally.

Here he was:

  • Quick inning for Jaime. Three ground balls. 91-92 w 84 slider.
  • One, two, three. Punchouts on CB and FB.
  • Third inning for Jaime… one hit, three strikeouts. PB up 4-2 after 8.

Garcia struck out 5 in 3 innings work.

Onward and Upward!

Memphis 4, Omaha 6

  • Oneli Perez didn’t do much on the positive side in his start. 2 HRs allowed dotted the lowlights.
  • Ian Oslund let 1 of Perez’s runners score and none of his own over 3 innings.
  • Josh Kinney had another shaky inning.
  • Charlie Manning chipped in with an inning.
  • David Freese just liked getting on base with a 2-2 outing with 2 walks.
  • Jarrett Hoffpauir had 2 hits, 1 of which was a double.
  • Tyler Greene was 1-4 with a triple, a walk and 2 runs scored.

Springfield 2, Arkansas 7

  • Brandon Dickson gave up 3 runs over 7 innings.
  • Casey Mulligan gave up 3 runs on 3 walks and 2 hits in 1 inning.
  • Chuckie Fick gave up another run himself in an inning.
  • James Rapoport was 3-5.
  • Aaron Luna was 1-3 with a double, an RBI and a walk. Not on the same play, that would be a record.
  • Tyler Henley had a double and nailed a guy at third base. He’s quickly becoming a easy player to like. There’s lots of room on the bandwagon and AZ is driving!

Palm Beach 4, Jupiter 2

Quad Cities 2, Cedar Rapids 3

  • Jorge Rondon took the loss, striking out 7 in 5 innings of work, allowing 3 runs (2 earned)
  • Matthew Frevert continues his strong QC middle relief with 3 Ks in 2 shutout innings.
  • Jonathan Gonzalez struck out 1 and walked 1.
  • Jermaine Curtis, back a level, doubled and hit a HR and added a stolen base.
  • Xman was 2-4 with a double.
  • Jason Stidham cranked a double.

Batavia 11, Brooklyn 15

  • Deryk Hooker pitched well, even though it wouldn’t look like it from all the runs scored. He gave up 1 run in 4 innings with 3 Ks.
  • Joe Kelly, Jon Bravo, LaCurtis Mayes and Tyler Leach didn’t help the cause.
  • Devin Goodwin went 4-4 with 2 HRs.
  • Ryan Jackson was 4-6 with 3 RBIs.
  • Kyle Conley also had a solo HR.

Johnson City 6, Elizabethton 10 (Completion of game previously suspended on 7/29/09)

  • Ronald Russell jumped up from the GCL to JC and struck out 3 and walked 3 in 3.1 innings.
  • JRod Part Deux was 2-2 with a 2 run HR.

Johnson City 4, Elizabethton 3 (7 innings)

  • Chris Notti allowed 3 runs, but none of those were earned. He struck out 3 and walked 1 in 4 innings.
  • Adam Terry took the win with 2 Ks in 2 innings.
  • David Funky King(s)ton earned the save with 2 strikeouts.
  • Edgar Lara had a solo HR.
  • Ross Smith also had a solo HR.
  • Robert Stock was 2-3 with an RBI.
  • JRod 2 had a double.

Tremendous results from Garcia thus far. He’s got an outside shot at #1 status in the offseason prospect rankings.

  2. Tomm says:

Jess Todd called up to cleveland

  3. Andrew says:

Anyone know what type of prospect Charles Cutler is? I saw him play one game and he we 3-4. Very good at working the count but he kind of just hit 3 opposite field 2 strike hits, never really hit the ball that hard. Does he hit the ball hard or is he just a singles hitter?

  4. Vallon says:

said p.j was supposed to start today, anybody know why?

  5. tom s. says:

Anybody on staff want to take a shot at the new TZR defensive stats? I know a half season isn’t a ton of info, but I glanced at them and thought they were interesting.

  6. Pierce says:

It’s nice to see Jaime Garcia back and pitching well in his rehab. With the trades that wiped out a lot of the top prospects in our system, it’s nice to have another top guy back to root for.

  7. Hugo says:

very nice to think Garcia could be healthy. Anyone think they would consider AFL for him? Or do you think they would prefer some time rehabbing and maybe September with the big club then shut down for the year

  8. jimmy joe says:

If Robert Stock continues to play well and rise up the charts as our best catching prospect, will he become an Untouchable? Elliot Ness thinks so.

  9. Mookie says:

Went to the Springfield game last night, and will be headed back again tonight. It’s been a while since I made it to a game. Reading here, I know Kozma has had his share of fielding issues; but, last night he was lights out in the field. He had 3 sharply hit balls he picked up on the short hop and made solid throws across the diamond to make the outs. If this is something he’s been developing I’m interested to see how much better he can get as he continues to to develop.

Not much else to talk about from last nights game. I hope tonight’s is a little more eventful.

  10. Stan says:

I think most of Koz’s errors are of the throwing variety.

  11. jjray says:

With the emergence of Ryan and solid play @ AAA by T Greene, we have the luxury of letting Kozma repeat AA instead of rushing him. The kid has time to prove to everyone the errors this season were an aberration. Would like to see more gap power as he ages.

  12. riotmute says:

I would love to see Tyler Greene get a legitimate shot as a bench player next season. He could have a competition with Freese and Mather – I think one of these bats will be ready to go next spring.

So I agree with jjray – let Kozma master AA before you even consider promoting him again. He’s still super young and performing better than many taken earlier in his draft class at a higher level. Needs to hit for a higher average and cut down on the daily error.

  13. VolsnCards5 says:

the glove is the last thing i am worried about with the kozmanaut…it’s at the dish where he seems to be completely overmatched in AA….wish they had kept him at Quad Cities until about now and then moved him to AA

that is really exciting news about garcia…not sure he is my number one until he pitches well at a higher level, but i think that is a possibility…good to see that the velocity is there

its time to move robert stock up to A ball

  14. Jeffery says:

Kozma did make a couple of nice plays, but was saved twice by Hill picking the throws out of the dirt. Having watched Kozma all year since he has been to Springfield he DOES need to stay in Springfield. I am not convinced on his fielding day in day out. I saw Ryan and Greene when they were in Springfield and they were better on defense(fielding and throwing).

Henley’s assist went to the catcher, then to third. I really like what I see from him, but I am concerned about his power. Most of this HR’s at home have been down the line in right (330′) and when it warms up at Hammons Field the ball flies out. We had a very cool July.

    • azruavatar says:

I’m polishing off my Springfield review but I’m with you on Kozma’s defense. It was very hit or miss when I saw him (SSS – 2 games). More details friday.

  15. LDC says:

They rushed Kozma for sure, not doubt at this point about that but he seems to be the type that can take it. He’ll be back at Springfield next year and I bet we see a big step forward. When I watched him I like the way he plays SS but you can tell he was working on this throwing. He was thinking through his mechiancs on every throw and look like they might be working with him on getting the ball out of his hand quicker. He kind of throws more like a 3b than a SS. Quick release is something that gets overlooked at SS, you can play there with an average arm if you can get the ball out quick. But that is what the minors are for, to work those type of things out.

  16. erik says:

Whoa, Ryan Jackson is starting to come alive a bit for a no-hit SS. Hitting .351 in last ten games. It’s just ten games and it’s short season, but it’s still nice to see.

  17. BigJawnMize says:

I tweeted something to this effect, but after watching Gorzellany’s first start for the Cubs–I am wondering if they should rename any Pirates blog to futurecubs.net…

  18. BigJawnMize says:

My biggest complaint about stock is that his hitting stats mean almost nothing at Rookie ball. Stats there are almost total junk. Same problem for Jackson at Batavia. That said it is better to be hitting well than not hitting no matter where you put up the stats.

  19. Matt says:

Agent of current Cardinals prospect. If you’re interested in any interview please send me an email.

    Thanks

  20. bookerd says:

Perz was pitching on short rest for the Memphis, probably why he struggled. Memphis released the Kat (and I’m not talking about Jim Hayes) the Japanese pitcher.

I’m surprised Mulligan pitched again for Springfield he pitched 1-1/3 innings the day before and they throw him out there again. Where were the other bullpen guys.

The 7 K’s were a career high for Rondon, who has looked impressive for QC.

I too was going to mention Ryan Jackson he seems to be heating up…

  21. Andrew says:

Been intrigued by Mark Hamilton lately, he a legit bat? Seems to be perfect trade bait to me.

  22. Easy says:

Roberto De La Cruz is 10 for his last 22 after a godawful start. No power yet but it’s nice to see the improvement.

  23. GDM says:

Az doesn’t drive a bandwagon, he drives a pimped out van & Fred Bird rides shotgun. i’d be careful of getting in jeff, once you enter the van, you may never leave.

  24. Liam says:

Anyone think Aaron Terry can sustain his 4.2 GO:FO? He might be my new pet 40′s-rounder long-shot RHRP.
