This DFR is brought to you by a Colby Rasmus walk off and a volleyball thumb injury. (Amazing how often I want to use my left thumb to type.)

Memphis 7, Sacramento 10

  • Brett Wallace was 4-for-5 with a HR.
  • Tyler Greene was 3-for-5 with a double. While Tyler has been terrible in the majors this season, he’s been stellar in AAA. With a .822 OPS composed of a .285/.372/.451 slash line, he’s shown his best strikeout and walk rates since being drafted in 2005. Brendan Ryan and Julio Lugo seem to have the SS position locked down for 2010 barring injury but I’d expect the Cardinals to retain Greene with an eye towards 2011 and some depth at SS.
  • David Freese went deep.
  • Jon Jay was 3-for-5 with a double.
  • Nick Stavinoha was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • PJ Walters couldn’t escape the first allowing 7 ER while retiring just 2 batters.
  • Ian Ostlund was called in to mop up some innings allowing 3 runs over 6.1 innings.
  • Charlie Manning got the last 6 outs, 5 via the strikeout, while allowing 4 hits.

Springfield 1, Corpus Christi 8

  • Andrew Brown was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • The S-Cardinals tallied 7 hits but just the one XBH and one walk.
  • Ryan Kulik went the way of PJ Walters unable to escape the 2nd inning allowing 7 runs.
  • Casey Mulligan was forced to go 3 innings. He allowed 4 hits and 2 walks while striking out 4 for 1 ER.
  • Tyler Norrick struck out 2 and allowed a hit in 2.1 innings.
  • Francisco Samuel struck out 2 and walked 1 in an inning of work.

Palm Beach 2, Charlotte 1

  • The offense tallied just 1 single, 2 doubles and 3 walks over the course of the game. They managed to bunch them early to score both runs in the first.
  • George Brown struck out 6 in 6 innings. He allowed 5 hits and walked 2 for 1 ER.
  • Blake King struck out 2 in a scoreless frame.
  • Adam Reifer pitched a perfect 9th for the save.

Quad Cities 0, Peoria 15

Batavia 5, Staten Island 0

  • Ryan Jackson was 0-for-4. Looks like the scouting reports on his bat (or lack thereof) have been accurate so far.
  • Matt Adams was 2-for-4 with a double and a HR.
  • Chris Corrigan struck out 1, walked 3 and allowed 3 hits in 5 scoreless innings.
  • Justin Smith struck out 5 and walked 1 in 3 scoreless frames.

Johnson City 4, Greeneville 9

  • Robert Stock was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Klingon Teran was 2-for-4.
  • Edgar Lara was 2-for-3 with a double and a walk.
  • Rainel Rosario was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Let’s just pretend there weren’t any pitchers in this game. I can’t write up anymore bad pitching box scores.

This DFR is co-sponsored by Shelby Miller who I’ll be happy to write about in the future. Assuming Shelby is signed, the Cardinals will transistion from one player who was their top prospect for 4 years to another player who could very easily be their top prospect for 4 years. Very interesting.

Troy Glaus was also ejected from the Memphis game.

  2. RedC says:

Ejected? Sounds like he’s returning to form. Before that he made two outs, but evidently one was a sacrifice fly. He also started a double play.

P.S. I love that “Pear-shaped Third Baseman” Bret Wallace was listed like he’s still with Memphis.

  3. StewartMiller says:

The fact that Glaus was ejected from a minor league game is classic.

  4. Andrew says:

Another good outing by Blake King? Is it possible he’s legit?

    • Jeff Roman says:

I think he’s a legit middle reliever prospect. But there’s value in that. He can strike guys out. If within two years he figures out how to not walk guys, he’s all good.

    Heya Azru

Just to point out (not to nitpick, I think you’ve made this mistake twice now), it’s Ian Ostlund, not Oustland.

    Viva Corky!

It’s great, in these tough economic times, to see that the Stock market keeps rising (at least in Johnson City).

attempting to not get too excited by matt adams and robert stock…becoming very difficult…someone show me bad stats for them

  8. BigJawnMize says:

    Volsn-

Paperbag man…they aren’t even playing in the minor leagues. It is short season Rookie league. Case and point–Niko Vasquez

  9. jjray says:

@azru. Makes perfect sense for the Cards to hold on to Tyler Greene given that Kozma should repeat AA. After 2010, Lugo will be a free agent. Even if they stay with Skippy at 2B, he needs a right handed platoon partner who can also backup SS. Sounds like Tyler Greene, no? Amazing how middle infield has gone from an organizational black hole to one of strength in a short amount of time.

  10. Kelley says:

I am happy to see that the coaches are leaving Blake King alone in the bullpen to do his job as a reliever. Changing him back and forth from reliever to starter is a good formula for failure for a pitcher who has been in the bullpen for 2 years….and the stats showed that fact. Blake is back on tract with 92 k’s in 72 innings…with 58 walks and only 24 ER’s. His 1.35 Whip is one of the lowest and so is his 160 opponents batting avg. Just leave Blake alone and he will get his job done, and maybe the coaches can use their time giving hitting lessons so there might be some run support for the pitchers.

  11. UncleBuck44 says:

Andrew, I wouldn’t be surprised if Blake King goes up to AA and does what Francisco Samuel has done. I think his control will prevent him from being a major leaguer.

  12. Easy says:

Plus one on the middle infield. If Ryan stays healthy he should be a fixture for several years. What was it that TLR didn’t like? We’re good and cheap up the middle with Sch, Ryan, Yadi and Rasmus. Should free up lots of cash for other postitions.

  13. cariocacardinal says:

If Shelby Miller is our top prospect for the next 4 years I’d say that we shouldn’t be giving him $3+ million. I’m not expecting Rick Porcello who only pitched one minor league year but if Shelby takes more than 2.5 years to reach STL I’ll be disappointed.

  14. cariocacardinal says:

Looking at King and Samuel, is there any reason Samuel gets so much more hype? Samuel strikes out a few more but King strikes out plenty and gives up fewer hits and walks. King is actually younger (5 months) as well.

  15. Kelley says:

I never could understand the comparisons about King and Samuel, except Blake has been compared to Samuel as it relates to control…and I might add unfairly….but Samuel is in AA and King has never been promoted to AA, even though the stats are heavily in favor of King. I think the WHIP stat and the Opponents Batting avg are the two key stats that should be reviewed for a pitcher just like the OPS is valued so highly for position players. There is some merit in a pitcher being “effectively wild”.

  16. UncleBuck44 says:

Carioca, Samuel likely gets more hype because he throws 95-98. From what I’ve heard over the years, King is more around 89-93.

  17. Gruntosaurus says:

Who are Stock’s comparables? When I look at him, I’m not sure whether to be excited because he’s a 19-year-old who’s mashing at the introductory league, or ho-hum because he’s been in college for a couple of years yet is still entering there rather than at QC or PB, or even Batavia. Usually “19 years old” and “significant college experience” are an either/or proposition; a player who has the one won’t have the other. Who else has been “both of the above” in recent times, and how has it worked out? Do they play young, or do they play experienced?

  18. bookerd says:

I didn’t see it mentioned anywhere, but Joe Mather played RF for GCL and went 1-3 with 2 RBI’s

  19. Andrew says:

Stock didn’t do well as a position player at USC probably because of the age issue, he in fact did skip his senior year in HS to go to USC after getting his GED. I’m excited because this is the first time hes been able to focus on his position and not split time between hitting and pitching. Plus this is the first chance he has had to play with people his age since he was 15. I think hes really getting his confidence back and showing why he was a shoe in to be a high first round pick if after his senior year if he would have gone.

  20. Tim says:

Just wanted to say that I hope you Cards fans are enjoying Matt Adams (he is a local boy from my college). I will be going to the game on Thursday to root Batavia (more importantly Matt) on!
