From BJ Rains on twitter:

Shelby Miller is on his way to St. Louis tonight for a physical tomorrow morning….Mozeliak ‘optimistic’ that a deal will get done.

I don’t have inside info to share but, personally, I’m less concerned about this signing than I have been about any in recent memory.  I’d be very surprised if this doesn’t happen.

Update by Erik, 8/17/09, 10:15am. Jonathan Mayo on Twitter.

Hearing reports on Shelby Miller and Cards deal are accurate, but not quite for the $3.25 mil being reported. My guess: $2.9 mil.

This deal is 99.99% likely of getting done, I’d think. Pretty significant stuff, if the Cardinals do end up signing two teenagers for $6M.

IMO it seems unlikely they would bring him in for a physical unless they plan to announce a deal tomorrow. I bet they have a deal in order and this is the only thing keeping it from being public.

    who else remains unsigned?

  3. JC says:

Usually you don’t have a guy come to your town for a physical unless you are REALLY close to getting a deal done. This is a very positive sign.

On that same note do we know what the status of the other guys not signed? Here is the list I have that is still unsigned…please correct me if I am wrong:

16 – Daniel Bubona – Another guy I am very intrigued by
    22 – Joey Bergman
    27 – John Folino
39 – Taylor Terrasas – This is a guy I am very interested in as well
    45 – Adam Heisler
    46 – James Klocke
    49 – Andrew Hillis

Iirc, most of the remaining guys were hs picks with high ceilings. I suspect most will do a year or two of college/jco and try to boost their stock for an earlier pick.

  5. Grant says:

I remember reading that 22nd-round pick Joey Bergman won’t sign. He’s returning to the College of Charleston for his Senior year. He put up some huge numbers in college, especially for a 2B, so it would have been nice to sign him.

So does Shelby pitch any this year? If so, or even if not, where does he make his debut this season or next?

Be nice to have a bona-fide ace-like SP in the system.

I would think he’d get on the hill for a try or two. JC would be the most likely destination, but he’s been sitting idle for so long, GCL might not be out of the picture.

  7. JC says:

Tom S – Only 2 of those guys are HS players (Terrasas and Hillis). The others were college guys.

I assume that Miller will be the only remaining signing but I was curious if anyone had heard anything since the draft on any of the other guys. I knew some of them were a stretch to sign. Thanks to anyone that has any info.

This looks like great news that Shelby is headed to STL for a physical. Much the same way they did Lynn and Wallace last year.

  9. tom s. says:

Mea culpa. Shows how good my memory is.

Now, what did I come in here for?

  10. Jws003 says:

Keith Law just posted a recent draft update on espn insider saying Miller is doing his physical and if everything checks out good he is going to sign for an amount comfortably over-slot in the Top 10 money range. He went on to say this is a major coup for the Cards because we have no one in the system quite like Miller, probably refering to his skill level and his extremely high potential.

Get the bags ready, looks like we are going to have a new #1 prospect tomorrow..

  11. bleacherbum593 says:

When & if he signs, he’ll be assigned to a team but he’ll be there strictly to condition and to get a feel for life in the minors. He will not pitch competively till the FIL. this fall.

  12. JC says:

Goold at STLToday is reporting that Miller is certainly going to be in town today for a physical and both sides are optimistic this deal will get done. It is believed that the deal will be a club record at approx $3.25M. Another interesting note of the article is this is the only remaining draft pick that is negotiating with the club which answers my question on the other remaining draft picks.

Would have liked to have signed Berman. Not quite sure why he wouldn’t sign, considering he’ll lose all his leverage next year as a high school senior, and will be hard pressed to improve upon his monster numbers from this year.

  14. VolsnCards5 says:

$2.9? thats a pretty sharp discount from the $4mil he was reportedly asking for on draft day…he must have really wanted to sign
