Shelby Miller Signing Open Thread
Posted on August 17th, 2009 by Jeff in 2009 MLB Draft, shelby miller, tags: shelby millerI hope none of the other mods mind, but I thought I would throw up this post to congregate the Shelby Miller signings announcements, rumors, prices, links etc.
Here’s the tip of the iceberg from Jonathan Mayo:
Source tells me Shelby Miller has indeed agreed to terms with Cards. No. 19 pick in #mlbdraft will indeed get $2.9 mil as I guestimated.
UPDATE It’s official, if it wasn’t already:
Per BA
The Cardinals have signed first-round pick Shelby Miller for $2,875,000. His bonus is the highest in the first round this year, the second-highest for a drafted player in club history and well over MLB’s $1,386,000 recommendation for the No. 19 slot.

Good deal.
So now that the paperwork is out of the way, can we start a pool on which year he wins his first cy young now? shall we start the bidding at 2013?
I’m going to start with “getting to the majors” and then we can go from there.
kudos to mo and dewitt for signing him.
this is really good news. Shows that to me that they are serious about growing from within and they were not lying when they said the signing of the DR kids doesnt affect this signing.
I second that. We get a young, power arm with high upside. . .about $1.1 mil less than what he had originally requested. . .and he’s had a whole summer off to rest his arm. Good stuff. My 2010 top 5 prediction: 1) Shelby Miller, 2) Jaime Garcia, 3) Wagner Mateo, 4) Robert Stock, 5) Daryl Jones.
jeff, set the goals high…..
Excellent sign by the org.
Can’t ask for much more. Making moves for right now and committing to the long term future at the same time. I think they’ll make good faith efforts to sign Holliday and DeRosa and, if they get outbid, there’s not much they can do about it.
Between this signing and Mateo that is a good way to start with high ceiling guys getting added to our farm. Very excited to see what this kid can do next year in the minors. Great job on the high ceiling draft pick AND the signing of the pick! Got my “Shelby Miller Rocks” T-Shirts getting made as we speak!
Excellent day, both for the Cardinals and for FutureRedbirds….
BA is confirming this as a $2.875 M Bonus. A true reason to celebrate for Cards fans!
Mo has just proclaimed to all of the cry babies —- “Eat it!”
Next question—- who has had the better season, Albert Pujols or John Mozeliak?
PJ – LOL! I say Pujols has had the better season…he has put up the numbers without having to pay anyone or giving up prospects! Hard to beat that!
How about another podcast?
I’ll be on UCB Wed night. We should do another one soon. We’ll see.
Thank you for the edit mods—-my bad…
grant greene, matzek, alex white, and purke unlikely to sign – per erik’s twitter feed to the right.
ick! glad i’m not those gms.
It’s great for this system to gain guys of the top caliber of Mateo and Miller after losing Wallace, Perez, Todd, and Mortensen.
Let’s hope Stock continues hammering the ball, and we won’t have to worry about the farm system slipping that much.
With so many guys not signing it could really start to affect the depth of the draft in coming years. Allowing better players to slide to us on a regular basis.
man the tigers love giving high school pitchers major league contracts….jacob signed to a six year deal worth upwards of 7 million dollars…wowza
Any chance of getting a rundown on who the Cards signed and who did not sing from the draft? Last I heard, we still had a few other high round picks not signed, but that was about a month ago.
Matt – Ultimately only 3 first rounders did not sign and 1 (Crow) can still sign (I think up until next years draft…but I might be mistaken). The other 2 were Matt Purke (whom I was a BIG fan of and was promoting as someone we should take if he was available at #19) and LeVon Washington (Rays pick late first round). One guys name out of the 1st round to NOT sign was James Paxton who the Cards were linked to alot in the predraft.
Mike – It appears the Cards website is up to date now on 2009 Draft picks and who is signed/no signed.

I’m not sure if you are looking it at the same way, but to me it’s the Cards betting six million that either Wagner Mateo or Shelby Miller become a part of our franchise in the future. You’re better off placing your bets on two spots rather than just one.
