Why in the world would the Cardinals dream that any team was going to draft Gary Daley? I’m assuming that they needed another arm in AA. Gary Daley has an arm.

As to Daley, I think there is a rule that for a player to be eligible to play in the Arizona Fall League they have to have played in at least AA ball. That may be why they have double jumped him to AA. If they send him the the AFL that will also give them more time to evaluate whether they feel they need to protect him in the Rule 5 Draft.

ironically enough, i think had Jaime been healthy this year, he probably would’ve had the inside track on the 5th rotation spot and probably would have beat out Joel.

Minor league Rule 5 guys can play at any level, just look at Cody Haerther he played at Double this year before getting let go and was taking in Triple-A phase, a majority of the guys taken in that phase play below Triple-A.

if you check the wikipedia entry for rule v, you’ll see that minor leaguers taken in rule V do in fact have to play a level up — e.g., someone taken from Springfield would have to go to the AAA roster of the taking team, someone taken from palm beach would have to go to the AA level, etc.

Cariocardinal- I was wrong, I thought you had to play “up” the next season if you were taken. From my understanding now, if you are on the AA roster can you can be taken in the AAA part of the draft, which I don’t see happening with Daley. I could be waaay off with the whole Rule 5 theory, but looking at his numbers, it is the only thing I can think of as to why he was promoted.

I believe Garcia was ticketed for the rotation THIS year, had it not been for his injury. They’ve already started his clock by having him pitch last summer and putting him on the 40 man roster. They might as well let him have the 5th starter spot next season.
