Memphis 7, Round Rock 3

  • Jarrett Hoffpauir and Allen Craig both went 2-for-4. With an OPS just shy of .900, Craig has created another specatular offensive year despite several prolonged slumps. In July, he posted an OPS over 1.200 and he’s followed that up with another 1.000+ in August. Nick Stavinoha, though art expendable.
  • Evan MacLane tossed 7.2 solid innings striking out 4. He walked none and allowed 6 hits for 3 ER.
  • Matt Scherer finished up the game with 4 scoreless outs including 2 Ks.

Springfield 3, Corpus Christi 1

  • Colt Sedbrook was 2-for-4 with a walk.
  • Joey Bombs (gosh it’s fun to write that again), was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. He played CF and transitioned to RF.
  • Steven Hill and Aaron Luna were 2-for-3. Luna went big fly.
  • A very nice outing for Brandon Dickson who struck out 9 over 7 innings. K’s aren’t his calling card so it’s interesting to see an outing like this. He walked 2, allowed 4 hits and 1 ER.
  • Chuckie Fick pitched two scoreless frames walking 1 to end the game.

Palm Beach 1, Jupiter 3

  • Tommy Pham tripled.
  • David Kopp tossed 3 innings. He allowed 5 hits and 3 runs (2 earned) walking 1 and striking out 2.
  • The game was only 6 innings long presumably on account of rain.

Quad Cities 4, Burlington 12

  • Raco Racobaldo was 2-for-3 with a pair of doubles and a walk. His numbers slipped after the promotion but it was a nice night for Raco.
  • Xavier Scruggs was 3-for-4.
  • Eric Fornataro was battered around for 9 hits in 4 innings accounting for 4 ER.
  • The relief pitchers provided little relief: McCully – 1 IP, 2 ER; Gonzalez 1 IP, 5 ER; Veres 2 IP, 1 ER.
  • Only Ramon Delgado escaped his inning unscathed.

Batavia 2, State College 9

  • I imagine this team has a collection of those ubiquitous shirts that just say ‘COLLEGE’ across the front.
  • Devin Goodwin was 2-for-4.
  • Matt Adams was 2-for-4 with a double.
  • Joe Kelly got lit up for 5 ER in 2 innings of work. He struck out 5 but walked 4.
  • Andres Rosales followed that up with an ugly 3 ER in 1.2 IP.
  • Deryk Hooker finally came in with a solid performace striking out 6 over 3.1 innings of scoreless work.

Johnson City 3, Burlington 5

  • Klingon Teran was 2-for-5.
  • Audry Perez was 2-for-2 with a pair of walks.
  • Randy Santos took his 6th loss allong 4 runs (3 earned) in 4 innings of work.

I know this is for future redbirds, but damn, watching Perdomo would have been a better add to the 40 man than Scherer. I can understand why everyone was complaining about that.

  2. Andrew says:

Good pitching by Hooker glad or young pitching talents are succeeding.

  3. illinois_cardfan says:

Perdomo has a 4.47 ERA – not much of a loss in my book. With Scherer’s numbers, he has a great shot at a September call up.

  4. cariocacardinal says:

Dickson actually has nearly 7K per 9 the second half of he season and a better than 3-1 K:BB ratio.

Luna now OPSing .938 at Springfield. 2bad they aren’t letting him play 2B there.

  5. Tim says:

Yay Matt Adams! Representin’ my boy!

  6. Snayke says:

Craig will make a good spare outfielder/pinch hitter. It’d be nice if he could develop as an every day player…but I’m not seeing it.

  7. jjray says:

I wonder why they keep playing Jarrett Hoffpauir over Descalso. I like Hoff but there is no room for him on the AAA roster going forward and he won’t make the Cards roster in 2010. Competition from below prevents him from being the new Bo Hart. Why not recognize the obvious and turn 2B over to Descalso now?

  8. Kelley says:

I agree that Dickson is having a great second half of the season….He has more K’s and less hits and seems to have gotten stronger. I see the same improvement with King in Palm beach. King is nearing 100 K’s and has 35 fewer walks than K’s with a 2.92 ERA…coupled with the best record on the team 8-3 which seems pretty darn good for a reliever…the KEY phrase being that King is a reliever and the coaches need to leave him in that role. I am not sure why he has not been promoted with his stats compared to some of those who they have moved up.

  9. PJ says:

Perdomo K’d the best hitter in baseball twice, yes?

    Yeah–not much of a loss there…….

  10. Easy says:

jray. I suspect we all agree that the Card’s treatment of Descalso has been odd and I think it’s been deleterious to his performance. He hit the ball well when he first came up to Memphis and then slumped when they began moving him around. The Cardinals have a way of showing young players that they don’t believe in them and I think they don’t take into account how easily demoralized they can become. See Brian Anderson and Allen Craig’s early performance this year.

  11. VolsnCards5 says:

they should send descalso back to springfield if they aren’t going to play him at 2nd every day…but what do i know, i thought bryan anderson pre-injury was a better prospect than matt pagnozzi…

  12. VolsnCards5 says:

By the way…congrats to Erik, who got some dap in the NEW YORK TIMES today…thats pretty friggin sweet…http://www.nytimes.com/2009/08/23/sports/baseball/23score.html?_r=1

    >>>”Perdomo K’d the best hitter in baseball twice, yes?”

He also gave up a home run to Ankiel and a triple to Boog in his second inning. If he K’s Pujols twice in a single game, I’ll take notice.

It’s ironic…probably the only reason why the Padres picked up Perdomo on waivers after the Dodgers optioned him is because Mark Worrell got injured.

I think it is time for Fornataro to go back to Batavia, he has ptiched 4 times for the Bandits and has been shelled everytime. Last night he pitched around trouble the first time through the Bee’s lineup but the second time thru he got hit hard. I watched him in warmups and he didn’t look impressive. He was wild and didn’t seem to have much on anything he threw.
Actually Racobaldo has been hot lately, yes he did struggle after being promoted but he is now hitting over .300 in his last 10 games.

  15. southeast redbird says:

    Kelley,
I am sure that you are aware that coaches don’t make the decisions, it’s up to Luhnow and company.
Good stats don’t always mean a promotion in any organization, they have reasons as to why they move some up and down and most of the players realize that. It’s not fair to dis players who may not have better stats than others for moving up. They don’t control the situation, management does. Sometimes it’s just…we need this player here now.
FWIW, in my opinion, if he is doing well, he’s better off working with Martinez until end of season.
