Wins from the top three clubs and losses from the low minors (Batavia gets rained out) leaves us with 5 games to cover. I’ve got the Jaime Garcia start to watch on Monday as well. Looking forward to that.
- Tyler Greene goes 3-for-5 with a double. With an .814 OPS in the minors, Greene has re-established himself as a viable future utility player. He’s hitting .283 on the season and, while we don’t get caught up in batting average too much here, the ability to make contact was a big question mark for Greene. He’s made progress in displaying that skillset though the jury isn’t quite back from deliberations yet.
- Jarrett Hoffpauir goes 2-for-4 with a pair of doubles. The organization does a lot of things right. I like the aggressive promotion (most of the time). I like the new willingness to cut players in the low minors that aren’t performing. I do not, however, like or understand how the club deals with some of their in between type players. Why promote Descalso if you aren’t willing to play him everyday? Why promote him if you want to retain Hoffpauir after his .293/.360/.489 season? These AAA players that are marginal depth guys for the big league club can be frustrating to watch but the big league club just isn’t quite willing to cut bait on them yet to the detriment, imo, of some more talented players.
- Nick Stavinoha and Allen Craig were 2-for-5. Craig had 2 doubles.
- David Freese was 2-for-3 with a HR and a pair of walks.
- Oneli Perez went 8 innings striking out 6 and allowing 7 hits. There was only 1 ER on his watch.
Springfield 3, Corpus Christi 1
- Jim Rapoport was 2-for-4.
- Tyler Henley and Pete Kozma both doubled.
- Nick Additon lasted 5.1 innings striking out 4 and walking 3. He allowed 2 hits for 1 earned run and retired all 11 ball in play outs via flyballs. Yikes. In Springfield, Additon has walked and struckout 16 batters in 27 innings. Not the kind of ratios you’d like to see.
- Casey Mulligan retired 5 batters walking 2 and striking out 2.
- Francisco Samuel pitched a scoreless 8th followed by a scoreless 9th from Eduardo Sanchez.
- Matt Carpenter was 3-for-7 with a double and a triple.
- Charles Cutler was 3-for-4 with a pair of triples (he’s a CATCHER none the less) and a walk.
- Chris Swauger was 5-for-6 with a double.
- Tommy Pham was 3-for-6 with a double and a HR.
- PB had 25 hits, including 9 for extra bases, and 2 walks.
- Brian Broderick struck out 8 over 7 innings. He allowed 1 ER on 4 hits and a walk.
- Adam Reifer allowed an unearned run on 2 hits in the 9th. He’s had a very odd season. Billed as having two plus pitches (fastball, slider) he’s struck out 46 in 43 innings (very good), walking 20 (not good) and, most odd, allowing 46 hits (not good). The hits are what gets me since he’s supposed to have such good stuff.
Quad Cities 1, Burlington Bees 2
- D’Marcus Ingram was 2-for-5.
- Xavier Scruggs was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- QC out hit the Bees 8 to 5 but had 0 XBH.
- Scott McGregor turned in another good performance striking out 6 in 7 innings. He allowed 2 runs on 4 hits and 1 walk. He’s got the kind of pitching profile that tends to go unnoticed. He’s shown exceptional command walking just 22 in 102 innings but he’s struck out a modest 67 batters. What sets him apart is the startling 60% GB rate. Whether he can maintain that while moving up the ladder remains to be seen but keep an eye on McGregor.
- Audry Perez was 2-for-4.
- Edgar Lara was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks. Lara has shown great power (.200 ISO) but as a 20 year old in JC (and someone who seems like they’ve been in the system forever), he needs to step it up with a full season club in the very near future.
- Reynier Gonzlaez was pounded for 7 runs (4 earned) in 2.1 innings.
- Andrew Moss pitched 3 scoreless frames striking out 2, walking 2 and allowing . . .you guessed it . . . 2 hits.

Reifer has been very good his last 10 or 11 appearances without I believe 1 hiccup in there, I’m betting he hasnt given up many hits in the last few months.
Was looking up Reifers stats and saw that Dennis Martinez was the pitching coach in Palm Beach…. Is that ex Major Leaguer Dennis Martinez?
Also in Adam Reifers last 10 games not including today he has 7 saves a 1.93 ERA and 6 hits given up in 9 inning. He’s also struck out 8 and walked 2, So I would say hes trending upwards.
Yes Andrew El Presidente is the PB pitching coach.
Adron Chambers’ 16th Triple of the year puts him one behind the post 1960 leader Willie Montanez who had 17 in 1967!
Both cutler and carpenter are putting together tremendous seasons. Both seem to be doing well in PB. Any chance carpenter starts the year in spfld? With wallace traded, freese likely to join the ML team, and craig moving to LF, our 3B depth has been decimated in the high minors. Cutler is probably going to be slowed to work on his D.
It’s harder and harder to see hoff’s role with lugo on the squad. A RH platoon partner to skip or descalso makes some sense. But Lugo seems to have the lock on that spot. 2b is a weak link for a lot of teams. The hoff has a bat. Somebody’s gotta be curious enough about it to send us a depth guy for him.
Wish we had a way to edit on here, on Adron’s triples it should read one behind Post 1960 franchise leader.
Hey, Tommy Pham! He’s having a passable second half, which is more than I was hoping for.
danup beat me to it. Not only has Pham shown some power lately, his BA has climbed by more than 20 points.
Tom:
I agree that Cutler and Carpenter are starting to stroke the ball again….they went through a mini slump in August and I hope that last night was their “break-out” night. PB needs to win nearly every game from now until the end of the season to make the playoffs, and hitting will play a major role in the success of PB. The minor leagues don’t have the luxury of putting the “best and hottest” players on the field every night because ALL of the players need to to be evaluated in order for the management to determine who is to be kept, cut , promoted or demoted in the system. I understand concept of equal playing time….but I sure like to win!
David Freese appears to be back as he is hitting well now for Memphis. He’s a non glamour prospect but he still strikes me as the best bet to play as well or better than DeRosa at third base next year. He’s considered the best of the candidates (Mather and Craig) defensively and he hit well enough to be in most people’s top ten last year. I have a feeling that he’ll get slighted in most lists this year even with our diluted talent pool but he really shouldn’t. His crummy season can be totally attributed to injury and he appears to have overcome it.
Seems like Riefer’s resurgence came about the time Mulligan got promoted.
Lugo’s hitting .190 in his last 10 games, he’ll be 34 in Nov. I’d rather have J-Ho and Tyler Greene on the roster next year in place of Khalil and Lugo.
Shaneo, I think the Cardinals will give Lugo every chance seeing as how he’s virtually free of cost. We’ve got six more weeks plus postseason to see if he’s a steal or not.
