With a little over two weeks to go in the minor league seasons, here’s the playoff chase update for your Cardinal affiliates.
The Memphis Redbirds are 68-60 and 2.5 games up on Nashville in the PCL American North Division with a magic number of 14.
The Springfield Cardinals won the first half for the Texas League North Division with a 38-32 record, which grants them a playoff berth. They sit in 3rd place in the North Division in the 2nd half with a 25-29 record. They are 4.5 games back with an elimination number of 12.
The Palm Beach Cardinals were 29-14 29-41 in the first half, good for second to last in the Florida State League South Division. They are currently 25-30 in the second half and are 7 games out of first with an elimination number of 6.
The Quad Cities River Bandits were 30-40 in the first half, good for 6th place in the Midwest League Western Division. The River Bandits currently are in 7th place, 11 games out of first, with an elimination number of 8.
The Batavia Muckdogs are 31-31 and 9 games out of first in the NY-Penn League Pickney Division. The Muckdogs will have to work some magic to overcome an elimination number of 6 to repeat as league champions.
The Johnson City Cardinals are 31-27 and sit 8.5 games out of first in the Appalachian League West Division. Their postseason hopes are quickly diminishing as their elimination number is 2.
Long live the DFR after the jump.
- Jaime Garcia had an up and down start for Memphis. He allowed 6 runs although only 1 of those was earned. However, he gave up a grand slam after his own throwing error.
- Tyler Norrick and Fernando Salas combined for an inning.
- Josh Kinney struck out 3 in 1.2 innings, but also allowed 3 hits.
- Royce Ring finished off the game.
- Mark Hamilton was 3-4 with a HR.
- Nick Stavinoha was 3-6 with a HR.
- Rehabbin’ Troy Glaus went 1-4 with a HR and 2 walks.
- Allen Craig hit his 23rd HR of the year.
- Daniel Descalso was playing 2B and was 2-5 with a HR.
Springfield 5, Corpus Christi 3 – 11 Innings
- Trey Hearne started and pitched 4 innings and littered the scoreline with 3s. He allowed 3 hits, 3 runs while walking 3 and striking out 3.
- Pardon me for just a second while I pause and don’t understand Gary Daley. He couldn’t get a single guy out in Quad Cities and then he gets jumped up 2 levels to Springfield and he hasn’t allowed a run. He pitched 2 more scoreless innings tonight. I hope that he has figured something out because the time was running out on him. I think we can leave him exposed for the Rule 5 draft this year as no one will take a pitcher on their 25 man roster that had a 7 ERA in single A ball the year before.
- Marco Gonzalez pitched 2 scoreless.
- Ed Sanchez pitched 2 scoreless.
- Chuckie Fick struck out 1 in his 1 inning to get the win.
- Andrew Brown had a walk off 2 run HR in the 11th.
- James Rapoport was 3-5 with 2 doubles and 2 RBI.
- Mike Folli had a pinch hit solo HR.
Palm Beach was off.
- Scott Schneider thou hast slept long enough. Awake sleeper! He struck out 8 and walked 0 in 7 innings allowing 1 run on 4 hits and taking the loss. This 20th round draftee in 2009 has 3 starts in QC so far this year for 19 innings and has struck out 19 and walked just 2!
- Ramon Delgado also gave up 1 run in 1 inning.
- Freddy Parejo was 2-4 with a double.
- D’Marcus Ingram was 1-4 with a double.
Batavia 2, State College 5 Game 1 – 7 innings
- Justin Smith pitched the first 4 innings, striking out 4 and giving up 3 runs on 5 hits.
- Christopher Corrigan gave up 2 in 3 innings.
- Ryan Jackson was 2-3 with a double.
- Travis Mitchell was 1-1 with 2 walks.
- Luis De La Cruz is in the DFR for all the wrong reasons with a passed ball and an error.
Batavia 4, State College 1 Game 2 – 7 innings
- Jesse Simpson is the next pitching sleeper as he pitched another strong 4 innings. He struck out 8(!) and walked 2 allowing 2 hits and 1 run.
- Justin Edwards vultured the win.
- Santo Maertz struck out the side in his 1 inning.
- Matt Adams was 2-3 with 2 doubles and an RBI.
- Niko Vasquez was 1-3 with a double.
- Devin Goodwin also had a double and 2 RBIs.
- Angel De Jesus struck out 4 in 5 innings allowing only 1 run while walking none.
- Cale Johnson gave up 2 runs (1 earned).
- Jose Rada pitched the last 1.2 innings.
- Jrod Part Deux was 1-3 with a double and a walk. But he also had an error.
- Live long and Prosper Teran was 1-4 with a double.

I agree on Schneider he has pitched great since being called up. Going to Wednesdays game in Peoria, was hoping it would be his turn in the rotation…little dissappoitned. Anyone know who Quad Cities has going Wednesday?
Boy I’d love to hear Luhnow explain Daley right about now…..
why did hearne get demoted?
I heard it was just going down to replace Justin Fiske who went on the DL. Gorgen got hurt also…..Hearne did have an issue his last start keeping the ball down from the stretch, gave up alot of hits in this last few games
Glaus-Craig-Hamilton-Descalso hit 4 straight HR’s for Memphis.
I’d love to hear some first-hand reports on Schneider. The guy’s been unbelievable.
Matt Adams continues to rake, even after his promotion to Batavia. Go ahead and jump on the bandwagon, there is plenty of room!
Minor crx: Palm Beach was actually 29-41, not 29-14, in the first half. Their overall record is 54-71, almost identical to QC, which is 54-72.
In the really, really low minors, the DSL Cards finished 46-27, 1 game out of first. I don’t know if that’s meaningful or not.
Thanks Lou. It’s fixed now.
robble robble robble@justin smith
Daley was just lulling us all into a false sense of non-confidence.
I’m with you on the Adams bandawagon Jws…Wish they’d have moved him up to QC to match the movent of the other Matt corner infielder in the system(Carpenter)
Glad you guys are enjoying my local collegian Matt Adams. He has been on fire this year! Keep it up man! Going to the game Thursday in Mahoning Valley, should be a good time. Anyone know who’s pitching?
Hey all.
Just went to look at Springfield’s roster for recent numbers for Ed Sanchez and he’s absent. Any buzz on him getting moved up today?
Was one of the few at the QC-Peoria game last night. Schneider gave up 3 singles in the first, the final one with 2 outs and runners on first and second. The throw home might have beaten the runner but the cutoff man had an easy out on the runner trying to go from first to third. The only other hit was a lead-off double in the seventh. Eventually the runner was thrown out at the plate on a grounder to first. so, 3-up, 3-down each inning from the second through the sixth. Impressive. I didn’t have great seats to tell what he was throwing and no one was operating the radar gun. But he appeared to throw about a 90 mph fastball with a very good change up (of all things in the Cards’ system). He may also have thrown a slider but I didn’t see anything with a big break on it. BTW – Freddy Parejo might be a name to watch – he is young for the league and very smooth.
This link regarding the Memphis-Round Rock game has some interesting anecdotes -
http://blogs.chron.com/unofficialscorer/2009/08/gone_farmin_notes_from_bad_nig.html
From bc’s link (which also includes a funny comment about the four homers in a row)
>>>>”Bases loaded for Memphis, single to left-center, one run scores, another runner coming home, and Chris Johnson goes to play cutoff man. Yordany Ramirez throws to an unoccupied third base, and the ball careens off the dugout facade to Doug Brocail, who is backing up behind the plate. Brocail fields it and falls down, and the third runner scores.”
Awesome.
Sanchez is indeed missing from the Springfield Roster.
Did someone go on the DL in Memphis?
Any chance Sanchez is the PTBNL in the Lugo deal?

Kopp, Lynn, Parisi, Anderson, Descalso, Jones and Henly are in the AFL this year
Andrew – Jorge Rondon should be pitching tomorrow. He has been impressive in his stint with QC.
I think Hearne got sent down when Boggs was sent down, but now that Boggs is back up don’t know what is going on.
Yea just read the Springfield Beat, Boggs was sent down, so Hearne was moved back to Springfield, now that Boggs moved back up his spot was taken by Garcia..
Anyone have info on Sanchez?
Sanchez and Gonzalez both are not listed. Both pitched last night. Probably just a glitch. Today’s game notes for Springfield does not contain anything about either.
I think that Sanchez and Gonzalez asked for a leave of absence to appear on “Dancing with the Stars! I could be wrong.
Sanchez is back on the Springfield roster, I’m just glad he wasnt the ptbnl in the Boston deal, they did in fact take on about 16 in Lugo’s salary to get rid of him
Shelby is on his way to Peoria to join the Bandits. Per Rick Hummel’ story Miller is scheduled to pitch Sept 3 & 7. I plan on being at the Sept 3 game. Said he will probably start and pitch the first 1 or 2 innings.
Going to Peoria game tomorrow, will see him pitch BP probably albeit it being from outside the stadium.
