David Freese is a man among boys. My concern is that he’s going to be a boy among men if the Cardinals rely on him to hit at the major league level. He’ll still be eligible for the prospect rankings in the offseason and he may hold his ranking if only because of the exodus of talent from the system.
Shelby Miller is going to be Kevin Goldstein’s number 1 Cardinal prospect.
Sometimes I forget that Adam Ottavino is just 23. I’ve not been his biggest supporter this year (although I pulled that bandwagon for a while) and I’ve still got concerns over his long term walk rate but he has been better lately.
As good as Jaime Garcia has been in his rehab starts, I have to wonder if there’s a compelling reason NOT to pencil him in as the 5th starter for 2010. I also have to wonder if there’s a compelling reason to not give him a start or two with the big league club during Lohse’s trip to the DL.
Joey Bombs makes his way back toward the big leagues. Jayson Werth didn’t become an everyday caliber starter till he was 28. Or, closer to home, Ryan Ludwick took until 29. Mather still has time but it’s running out.
Daryl Jones to be back tonight.
Justin Fiske back to the DL.

Right you really linked to that Freese artcile to show us that Wallace is #1 on the hot sheet, I see what you did there ;)
As for Garcia, I was thinking the same thing. Isn’t his schedule only like a day or two off of when we would need a 5th starter next? I almost see them giving him 1 maybe 2 starts in Memphis then calling him up. Also if they call him up soon enough don’t they get the keep from actually using the option?
First time poster here. Question: Do the Cards owe the Redsox a PTBNL for the Duncan trade? If so, any ideas who it is? I.e. are we going to lose Sanchez, Samuel or Freemen.
Thanks,
Neil
Pardon my ignorance, but what’s been up with Mather this year? Has it been recurring wrist issues? I guess I could look it up, but that’s the benefit of this site, eh?
As far as Garcia goes, I wonder if he’ll get a callup in September (my gut says yes). I would be content with him getting a start to fill in, but it seems like the bullpen would be his destination if he gets the call (again, going with my gut). Perhaps a trip to the AFL or winter ball would help cement his status as an option for the rotation next year…..
On that note, any preliminary guesses as to who might be sent to the AFL? I realize that’s a pretty vague question, just curious to hear what some names get thrown out there by all.

I hate seeing Wallace in that Springfield hat with “Oakland” next to his name. I hope they give a start or 2 to Garcia this season to allow him to build a bit more credibility with Tony and Dunc going into 2010.
how old is Bombs? 25? 27? if not for his wrist issues, he’d be on the big club right? so once he’s fully healed, should we expect him to be producing like a werth or ludwick? so we should not be worried then, correct?
Mather had a very good year last year and was going to be the starting 3b after Glaus got hurt this year if not for his own injury
There is no purgatory in baseball. Freese isn’t stuck between Memphis and St.Louis. If he is that much better than his competition in Memphis, he will make it just fine at the next level.
I don’t think Garcia will get a major league start unless it’s one of the last games and they’re resting starters for the playoffs. I don’t see TLR wanting to be distracted by a rehearsal for next year. Garcia may get a tryout as a third LH reliever with with an idea of keeping him for the post season if other things don’t fall into place.
Regarding Freese, I’m higher on him than Azru seems to be. If we thought he was a useful prospect last year there’s no reason not to this off season. He has fewer “ifs” than Mather or Craig as a third baseman and, assuming he can hit .270 with some bottom of the order power and play a good 3b, he’s far better than deRosa and the cast that we stayed in contention with this year.
