CHOO CHOO…Matt Adams train has got plenty of room…can he play another position?

  2. jacksonian says:

Is there a consensus scouting report on Frevert? His numbers look quite good (2.43 FIP this year) since he has been in the system. This is his first true season in A-ball (4 IP in ’08) but at 22 he is getting close to be old for his league. A 28th round pick out of Mo state intrigues me. But due to the lack of buzz around his name, you would think he is just another one of those guys who are getting by on guile and doesn’t have elite stuff like Adam Reifer is thought to have.

Chris Swauger sure is having a great August. .431 avg .432/.583/1.016 OBP/SLG/OPS for Aug. .486 last 10 games. He had a rough go after getting promoted in May, but has improved every month. Does anyone have any thoughts or comments about Chris?

how about tommy pham? dude is raking lately
i think ottavino has figured things out in AAA..really pitching well lately..him and lance lynn are two exciting prospects
i think mulligan and king are two more right handed relief pitchers to be excited about

  5. Kyle says:

Am i the only one that is getting excited about Ott is maybe turning the corner? I know he still needs to throw more strikes but his bounce back is encouraging. I think hes working his way into my own personal ranking in the 9-12 range.

Do i need to put the paper bag down? Does somebody need to lay some reality on me?

  6. sluhser says:

Adams apparently caught in college but wasn’t very good at it.

  7. Scott says:

I know I’m getting excited about Ottavino. Granted, he still needs to keep his walks down, but he’s going much deeper into games and getting much better results. I would say start him in Memphis next season, and if he does well and is needed, bring him up to the bigs.

Same with Lynn, except with AA and AAA, respectively.

  8. cardsfan says:

springfield pitching staff has been great lately. bullpen with sanchez and samuel is nasty. fick with a .61 era and daley with 0.00? are they for real?

  9. Jws003 says:

Still riding the Adams bandwagon. Even if he can’t play anything but 1B, at the worst he is some pretty good trade bait if he continues to hit.

  10. tgreenfield says:

oh how i wish ryan jackson’s name popping up for offense would happen more. but alas, there is a reason why he fell to the 5th round. subpar stats in a league where he should be doing better.

ditto what scott said. i was real high on ott after the WBC…after a rough set of months, i want to believe again. but one more year, a 24 yo in AAA isn’t unreasonable, but it definitely will be the big big litmus test to see if what we are seeing now is an aberration or what to expect as he matures and finally gets a feel for his pitches. a 2011 back end of lynn, otta, jaime, pj, boggs, and maybe hawk would give us some depth to fill some spots.

  11. Lou Schuler says:

This is a hybrid majors-minors note, but do you guys remember Reid Gorecki? Back in the dark days for the Cards’ farm system, he was one of our top 20 prospects for a while. Anyway, he’s now playing for Atlanta.

Nice to see one of our former prospects get a shot.

  12. Kelley says:

    Sadsushi:

I have to agree with you 100%…. Pham, Mulligan, King and I will throw in Swauger into the mix as players who have had a stellar year. Mulligan was one of the guys that deserved his promotion….not like many of the others. I am still trying to figure out how the Cardinals analyze their players for promotion. I can kind of understand why Pham and Swauger have not been promoted…log-jam of outfielders above, but King is another matter. King has been solid all year with the exception of the 2 “Spot Starts” the manager put King in just after the All Star break. King’s stats should have earned a promotion long before now…..1.15 ERA @ the all star break and now he is 9-3 with an ERA of 2.84….76 innings….41 hits allowed…..24 ER’s….0 HR’s….96 K’s….58 BB’s and a 1.30 WHIP. King’s walks are still too high, but how many pitchers have a spread of 38 between walks and K’s?

  13. Andrew says:

Regarding King I think Springfield’s bullpen is pretty stacked so its better he get work in Palm Beach than do nothing in Springfield, He will be at Springfield next year. Last year he spent the year at Palm Beach but that was as a starter for the most part, this year hes transitioned to relief and has looked very good.

  14. Kelley says:

    Andrew:

    Bullpen @ Springfield STACKED?
    Samuel…5.55 ERA…47 innings…34 hits…29 ER’s…46 BB’s…59 K’s….1.70 WHIP
    Gonzalez…4.99ERA…52.1 innings…60 hits…29 ER’s….21 BB’s….19 K’s….1.55 WHIP
    Fiske…5.96 ERA…22 innings…29 hits…15 ER’s…14 BB’s…18K’s…1.90 WHIP

Fick and Daley had stats worse than these before they were promoted.

  15. themop10 says:

Despite King’s walks he still has a WHIP of just over 1. That is pretty great considering his K rate. Plus you can’t score with 3 walks in an inning but you sure can with 3 hits. It will be interesting to see how his BAA holds against stiffer competition. Can he keep it so low? Will more patient/professional hitters walk more as well?

A promotion for King could be in order but it could kill him as well. If he gives up more hits against better competition and more walks because guys don’t swing as much he will fall off the map quickly.

  16. VolsnCards5 says:

any way matt adams can play left field…or would be a duncan redux?

  17. Easy says:

Scott et al, plus one on Ottavino. He’s been a puzzling prospect but I think he has a higher ceiling than Mortenson did. Also someone recently pointed out similarities in his build and minor league career to Joe Nathan. Nathan did almost nothing until he turned it around in the majors at age 28. Now nobody can predict that Ott or anyone will do that but it’s a reminder that “stuff” sometimes takes a long time to translate into success and maybe a change in role would facitlitate that for Ott.

  18. Michael says:

Wasn’t Ott an All-Star at Palm Beach in 2007, his first full season? So really last season was rough and the first half this season. He’ll be 24 at the start of next season and seems on pace to be with the big club in 2011 – 2012 at the latest. Seems to me he’s right on track.

  19. Andrew says:

The bullpen in Springfield currently is Daley, Mulligan, Samuel and Sanchez, with Norrick being called up to Memphis a week ago. Daley, Mulligan and Sanchez have been lights out the entire time they have been in Springfield and Samuel had 22 saves before losing his job to Sanchez. King isnt needed in Springfield this year and really theres no need to promote him yet let him get his first full season of reliefing under his belt before you move him to Springfield.

  20. tgreenfield says:

Re: Michael–I can only hope this organization doesn’t treat Ott like the Giants treated Nathan. Probably one of the worst trades in baseball history is that Giants/Twins trade. Would’ve have been even more lopsided if Liriano would have stayed healthy. FL was so so good before his elbow gave out. We’re talking Cy Young types of dominance in 06.

Either way, for those who claimed Ottavino is done or a bust, I think it’s imperative to remember that the scale of maturity and ‘learning how to pitch’ is not universal. 25 at the start of 2011? Sounds okay to me.

  21. Andrew says:

I think the fact that he was still in AAA after how bad his first half was shows that the Organization sees him as a real talent and possibility a part of there future.

  22. southeast redbird says:

Why not just be happy with the nice transition King has made? There is no need to bring up a player just to bring up a player, if he was closer to 5 year draft (like Daley) he would have been brought up. A player should always finish a season on a good note, why have to readjust a few weeks before end of season?

I am just wondering why you state who deserves a promotion and who does not. Are you part of the organization?

  23. waltdub says:

    Red October-
I saw Swauger play a couple of times in QC before he got promoted. He was the best position player on the team at that time (Niko was on the team, but really struggling at that time). Was aggressive, had a nice swing. Decent athlete. I didn’t think much of him before I saw him because he was a late round pick, but now that I’ve seen him he is one of my sleepers to keep an eye on.

  24. FreeRedbird says:

Beau Riportella has been released. He batted just .191/.269/.252 over 42 games in NY Penn League this season.
