- Some scouts will tell you to watch which players hit on nights when no one else is hitting. Memphis had 3 hits as a team. Allen Craig was 2-for-4.
- PJ Walters has been shaky as the season has progressed. He allowed 5 runs (4 earned) on 8 hits and 3 walks in 6 innings. He struck out just 2.
- Jim Rapoport was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks. Rapoport is hitting .263/.371/.353 on the season. His upside is probably a fifth outfielder. The walks are nice but the lack of power is going to eat into his production over time.
- Daryl Jones was 0-for-4.
- Joe Mather was 1-for-2 with a double and a walk.
- Andrew Brown was 3-for-5 with a pair of HRs.
- Pete Kozma was 2-for-3 with a double.
- Scott Gorgen got turned to stone (hmmmm. . . that doesn’t make much sense) allowing 5 runs in 6 innings. The long ball was the problem as he allowed 3 big flys.
- Francisco Samuel wound up with the loss retiring 2 batters allowing 1 ER on 2 hits.
- Chris Swauger was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Curt Smith went deep.
- Osvaldo Morales doubled and walked.
- Richard Castillo had a good outing allowing 4 hits in 7 innings for 1 ER. He struck out 3. Castillo has struggled with command allowing a walk every other inning and a K:BB ratio around 1.5. His saving grace has been just 4 HRs in 135 innings.
- Adam Reifer took the blown save and the win allowing a run on 2 hits and a walk. His season continues to perplex me and make me wary of low level relievers. (Can I get a bugle taps for Kenny Maiques?)
- D’Marcus Ingram was 1-for-2 with a pair of walks.
- Jarred Bogany was 1-for-3 with a triple and a pair of walks.
- Jason Stidham was 0-for-4 with a pair of socks.
- Frederick Parejo was 2-for-4 with a double and a walk.
- QC drew 10 walks in the game to with 6 hits. That’s a lot of stranded base runners.
- Jorge Rondon got lit up for 6 runs in 3 innings.
- Michael Swinson was 2-for-3 with a pair of walks.
- Kevin Conley have yourself a night! He was 4-for-5 with 2 doubles and a HR. After struggling at QC, he’s hitting .364/.447/.742 in 76 PAs. (That’s for you bgh.)
- The pitching was . . . o look Johnson City won!
Johnson City 7, Elizabethton 5
- Jonathan Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with a double and a pair of walks.
- Travis Tartamella was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Ross Smith playing CF was 3-for-3 with a double.
- Anthony Ferrara tossed 5 shutout innings allowing 6 hits and striking out 3.

Reifer actually got the win not the loss. He blew the save, gave up a single and a triple to lead off the ninth and then stranded the runner on 3rd base. Nothing to be perplexed about with Reifer, last night was his first bad outting in abotu 14, hes turned it around and will continue to improve in the AFL. Check out Palm Beaches site and look at his stats in his last 10 apperances.
Good catch on Reifer — brain meet fingers.
Went to the Quad Cities game last night and have a few interesting stories. First it was Shelby Miller’s first day with the team, I sat down by the visitors dugout for the last few innings and just kind of listened in to the players shooting the shit. He seems like a humble kid with his head on his shoulders. Its a good sign. Second, before the game from the same seat 2 of Quad Cities coaches were talking about Brown’s hitting at springfield and why Daley is doing so well there when he was horrible before. There answer is that his upper body was flying out allowing the batters to see the ball alot better and him having worse control. His delievry is more compact now and he’s dominating. 3rd, Rondon was like Dr. Jekell and Mr. Hyde. The first inning and 2 thirds he was virtually unhittable and then after that he couldn’t get an out to save his life. Peoria is really a good team and hit well and our pitching wasn’t very good at all. The Chiefs threw 2 pitchers the starter threw about 92, the second pitcher which pitched most of the rest of the game was probably hitting 94. Everyone of the Riverbandits including g Scruggs looked over matched. Scruggs had a particularly bad game excluding his rope single off the wall in the first.
So what did they say about Brown’s hitting? I personally think Brown could make the show in the right organization. It may be dependent on him playing passable defense in the OF though.
They just mentioned that he homered to win the game the night before and had already hit one of 2 today. They talked mroe abotu Daley, said that he threw 92 when he was at QC, same stuff just that the mechanics are what made the difference. Miller really is a physical specimen even at that age, a huge broad back. He signed a few autographs for some kids before and after the game. Most people there didn’t know who he was.
Any word on whether/when Shelby will actually pitch in a game, Andrew? That was a very interesting report; thanks.
From what I’ve read it sounds like he might get a little action in the late part of the season, but I don’t know if thats a sure thing. I think he is mostly there to get acclimated to pro ball.
According to a P-D article a few days ago, Miller will start 2 games for QC, September 3 vs. Beloit and September 7 @ Kane County. Each start will probably be just a couple innings.
Hell Yeah…I have tickets for the Kane county game!
Joe Strauss reported that Luhnow is stating Miller may pitch from the bullpen this year so as not to over-expose him. Not sure how accurate that report was.
Also, can someone tell me what HPGF means? Thanks in advance.
HPGF is a twitter tag that Joe Strauss started. It stands for hyperventilating prospect geek fraternity.
Also a big tall righthander threw a bullpen session of flat ground before the game also, he threw hard, more so than any of the QC pitches that pitched in the game. Not sure who it was as there uniform wasn’t visible. I think it was Scott Scneider, David Carpenter or Eric Fortundao
If (and ONLY if) Miller is still in shape to throw, you’d have to think it would be good public relations for him to get into a couple of games. I certainly wouldn’t want it to happen if there’s any question of his physical preparation, though.
KLaw on Miller in QC:
Pete (St. Louis)
Unusual to you that the Cardinals are giving Shelby Miller two starts at Quad Cities to end the year? Seems awfully aggressive to me.

Unusual, and I love it. He’s going to start there next year unless he gets hurt, so why not give him a quick tuneup? Beats the heck out of sending him to the Appy League.
He’s getting starts but hes only pitching 2 or 3 innings per game.
