I’ll have a review of Jaime Garcia with special attention to his 8/19 start up around noon central time.
Memphis has a homerun binge as several of the older AAA prospects and one really old man go deep in the game. A nice game for Palm Beach too before pitching undoes the lower minors. The season is winding down so enjoy the DFRs while they last.
- Jon Jay and Daniel Descalso both went 2-for-4.
- Allen Craig and Troy Glaus both had two hits with a HR. Craig also walked.
- Tyler Greene was 2-for-5 with 2 homeruns.
- David Freese was 3-for-5 with a HR.
- According to the boxscore, the wind was blowing in from rightfield.
- Evan MacLane was lit up for 12 hits in 5.1 innings and 6 ER.
- Fernando Salas retired 4 batters walking 1.
- Josh Kinney recorded 4 outs striking out 2.
Springfield was postponed.
- Tommy Pham was 1-for-3 with a HR and a walk.
- Charles Cutler was 2-for-4.
- George Brown struck out 6 in 7 innings. He walked just 1 and allowed 5 hits. Brown has some nondescript set of Palm Beach stats striking out just under 7 per 9 and walking 3 per 9. A 2:1 K:BB ratio but a rather uninspiring line overall.
- Jared Bradford struck out 2 and allowed 1 hit in 2 innings.
- Raco Racobaldo was 2-for-4.
- Eric Fornataro‘s struggles continue. He allowed 2 runs over 5 innings but walked 4 and was touched up for 5 hits. He struck out 4.
- Kyle Conley was 2-for-4 with a double.
- Batavia recorded just 6 hits.
- Niko Vasquez was 1-for-3. He has a .547 OPS at Batavia in over 200 plate appearances.
- Right there with him is gloveman Ryan Jackson who has a .545 OPS.
- Deryk Hooker walked 4 striking out just 1 in 4 innings of work. He allowed 6 hits for 2 ER.
- Joe Kelly pitched 3 innings. I don’t know if they’re stretching him out or just trying to get him some additional work before the season is out. He allowed 3 hits and 1 ER striking out 2.
Johnson City 4, Princeton 7 (This is a completion of a suspended 7/25 game.)
- Robert Stock was 2-for-4 with a HR.
- Ross Smith was 2-for-3 with a triple, HR and a walk.
- Cale Johnson struck out 4 in 3.1 innings allowing 6 hits and 2 runs (1 earned).
- Patrick Daugherty allowed 5 ER in 2.1 innings.
Johnson City 2, Princeton 14 (7 innings)
- Luis Mateo was 2-for-3 with a double.
- Robert Stock was 2-for-3.
- There were 3 pitchers, they allowed 5, 5 and 4 runs each. Let’s pretend there were 0 pitchers. Hooray for Robert Stock!

Can someone remind me why K. Green is still with the big club. You listed 4 guys in a row that would help the team more than Green. Hell he isn’t even the best Green possible.
They’re trying to turn Kelly into a starter.
Let’s hope Pham can really build on this strong finish into next year.
It would be great to see Pham finish out the year the way he’s been hammering the ball in August.
I’m trying not to get too excited about Stock, considering it’s JC and how everybody got so excited about Niko’s big numbers after being drafted only to see himself plummet this year. That being said, it would be great to see a guy that young develop into a beast as a catcher with good defensive skills and a plus arm. I wonder if anybody will put him in any Top 15 Cardinals lists next year.
What’s everybody’s Top 5 prospect list at the moment? Mine would go something like Miller, Jones, Garcia, Sanchez, and Lynn off the top of my head.
K. Greene is will the big club because the role his is playing is mostly to sit on the bench and the guys that are better than he is can benefit more by playing in the minors than by watching in the majors…..besides, it isn’t like the big club NEEDS a slight upgrade at the 25th roster spot right now.
*with the big club
Man, it seems like Rocco/Raco/Rock-O is in these things every freakin’ day.
I think Greene can be real successful as pinch hitter hes got talent just doesnt have the head to play everyday. But he can be a very valuable ph down the stretch, less pressure on him it seems.
So Ryan Jackson is pretty much a singles hitting gold glove SS? a la Brendan Ryan?
Did i nail it?
To clarify, i don’t view this as being a bad thing really, considering how valuable Ryan is to the big club.
tbh, brendan is prolly one of my favorite players on the team.
@Andrew. I take it you refer to T. Greene. If so, I agree mainly because he is probably a wash at the plate with K. Greene but TG is (I think) the best base stealer on the 40 man roster. In the playoffs, having a guy on the bench with power who can steal a base is huge in 1 run games. Right now though, agree with Steve P. We have a big lead in the division race and it would hurt TG to sit on the bench in STL. Glaus and Freese both are coming off of injuries and need to play as well.
Pierce – Top 5 is tough…but here is my Top 8 for now – Miller, Jones, Sanchez, Garcia, Lynn, Mateo (could be higher but at 16 I am trying not to get too excited about him), Descalso and Henley.
I know we traded a number of guys away this year but our system is still fairly deep…just lost some MLB ready (or close to ready) players and mainly relievers. We are very deep with relievers so I was OK with that. I think Wallace stung the most…but Holliday has proven worthy.
Go Birds – Jackson is kind of similar to Ryan in the respect of very plus plus defender (I have seen Jackson a few times in college…he is slick) and a hitter with minimal to no power. The difference is Ryan has finally proven he can hit well enough to justify playing everyday in the majors…Jackson has a LONG way to go before he gets to that point and he might just never get there. But he is such a good defender at a premium position that I was thrilled we snagged him and just hope his bat comes around.
It would be VERY unusual for the wind to be “blowing in from right field” in the Albuquerque park (which btw is an exceptionally nice place to watch a minor-league game), at least for very long. Mountain thunderstorms (we had one last night) can produce brief bursts of wind counter to the prevailing westerlies, but in the absence of those, or once they’ve moved on, the wind would normally be almost straight out to center. That’s one of the reasons (altitude is another) why that park is a notorious launching pad, which in turn is a reason why I, for one, am not all that excited about seeing lots of home runs hit there.
Stock is sure looking good, isn’t he? I repeat an earlier question: are there any comparables for a 19-year-old veteran of college ball? Which matters more, being young or the college experience? If the former, the Cardinals might have something pretty special here.
Every morning when I get my prospect report email from Bseball America…it does my heart good to see that Brett Wallace is not on it.
K Greene is on the major league roster because they traded for him and owe him big money.
Blake King was promoted to Springfield, to replace Samuel who went on the DL. Stavinoha is out 3-4 weeks with a broken hand.
According to the Memphis game story Freese crushed his homerun. Said it went at least 50 ft over the fence in dead center which is 400′. Kinney has pitched alot better lately hopefully he has things figured out.
Actually that was a good outing for Fornataro who has struggled since his promotion. Plus Peoria has one of the top offenses in the Midwest League so that makes it even more impressive for him.
When Brendan Ryan began pro ball, he averaged around .300 in the NY-Pennsylvania league. He is a good overall rounded athlete, who swiped bases in the low minors, before leg injuries.
Jackson does not have Ryan’s speed. Jackcon is also not hitting as well for average during his short season debut.
Yet Jackson is a nice prospect, because of defense. He also could add muscle to his frame and this could help him improve as a hitter.
