With their win tonight, Memphis is back in first place in the PCL American North Division by half a game over their opponent tonight, Nashville.

Springfield is still in the playoffs by virtue of their first half win, but they sit in last place in their division in the second half.

All other minor league teams sit out of the playoff chase.

DFR, go.

Palm Beach 0, Sarasota 1

    Man, how about Evan MacLane?

Here are his stats with Memphis including tonight.

    23 GS
    145 IP (6.3 IP/GS)
    88 K (5.46 K/9)
    19 BB (1.18 BB/9)
    4.63 K/BB
    1.43 HR/9 (Okay, that’s not so good)

Not lights out, but pretty impressive for a guy who was basically picked off the scrap heap for nothing.

Do we have a pitcher in the lower minors who is doing as well at Ferrara? If we do I don’t know of him.

  3. vallon says:

@ Andrew, schneider is doing great as well as calhoun voted organizational pitcher of the month

  4. Andrew says:

I knew about Schneider…….didnt realize about Calhoun, I know that Ferrara is considered to have big league stuff if he can stay healthy. So far so good.

  5. Grant says:

Does Ferrara start at QC next season? I would think so. He and Miller would form a pretty good combo.

  6. Kyle says:

Is Richard Castillo a top 15 prospect? Ive been following his stats for the past two seasons, but admittedly know nothing on his stuff or what he projects to be. When i looked him up i shocked to see that he is 5’11 165. But he had a very nice season last year as an 18 year old at the QC and is posting good numbers again as a 19 year old in the FSL. Maybe i should wait to see how he handles the jump to AA first, as that seems to be the most difficult hurdle for most of our pitching prospects.

  7. vallon says:

Cool hope ferrara does good man. Shelby makes his first appearance tomorrow i believe!

There has been a major league pitcher from Murray State. He too was a left-hander and not a high draft pick. Kirk Ruether, who pitched for many years for the SF Giants. (The August pitcher of the month Calhoun went to Murray State.)

  9. RobertoRydeWagner says:

Murray State U is in western Kentucky, 9000 students. One opponent was Jacksonville State that had a high draft pick this year. If a pitcher has great stuff in this league (or any other), scouts will find him. Here is Murray State’s 2009 record versus opponents:

Calhoun may be like Bibona, a little lefty from Cal-Irvine who did not sign. A soft tossing southpaw, made All America honors. If Calhoun can collect outs, the Cards do not care how he does it.

  10. Bob says:

Allen Craig’s second half line is now .400/.450/.770, with 18 HR’s in 185 AB’s. Insane.

As for low minors pitching, at Batavia Josh Squatrito has a 6-1 K/BB ratio, fanning 11 per 9 IP (1.38 ERA, no longballs in 26 innings). Of course, a 22-year-old reliever oughtta dominate at that level.

Also pitching at Batavia (during his age-19 season), Kevin Siegrist is pretty interesting. Listed at a very projectable 6′ 5″ 190, the southpaw held his own just fine despite making the jump from the Gulf Coast League (3.86 ERA, better than 2-1 K/BB). I look forward to his Quad Cities performance in 2010.

  11. Gruntosaurus says:

“If Calhoun can collect outs, the Cards do not care how he does it.” Not altogether correct, RobRyWag. Some methods of out collection (notably blowing guys away with heat) have higher chances of translating into success at higher levels than others. Case in point: PJ Walters, whose Magical Mystery Pitch has worked very well in the minors but has simply not fooled anybody in the Show. Will it do so with more experience? Most scouts seem to doubt it.

I’m not equating PJ to Calhoun. It would be nice to know exactly what Calhoun does throw, and how projectable it is. Got anything there?

  12. cariocacardinal says:

Audry Perez is showing some serious power #’s. Probably the best HR/AB ratio in the Appy league (haven’t verified that). I have no idea how his defensive catcher skills are though. If he can stay at catcher he may be a prospect.

  13. bookerd says:

Jeff, technically QC has not been eliminated from the playoffs. They have to win their last 6 games and get some help to makle the playoffs.

That was Johnson City’s last game last night.

  14. RobertoRydeWagner says:

Audry Perez hit well in the DR, jumped the GCL and has shown pop at Johnson City. Audry is not gifted with a magnificent physique, like the incomparable Ryde-Rod, but he could be a gamer.

  15. RobertoRydeWagner says:

Grunto, you are not altogether correct. ML teams need hundreds of players in their minor league system. We are happy to have pitchers who record outs.
Lets use reason. Calhoun was drafted in the 29th round, after a sparkling season. He is a good sized lefty. Given these facts, we can safely conclude, he throws junk. Just like our southpaw at the same round the year before, Brown.
You disparage PJ Walters. Its too soon to give up on him. Last year Hawksworth was forgotten, this year he is in the majors. Walters should get more chances.

  16. cariocacardinal says:

found out that Perez was 0-12 this year throwing out base stealers. So much for him being a catching prospect.
