Memphis 1, AlburLOSERS 0
- Affectation.
- Memphis swept this series 3-0 and will move on in the playoffs.
- David Freese was 2-for-4. An opposite field HR accounted for the only scoring in the game.
- Brian Barden was 3-for-3 with a double.
- Evan MacLane tossed a gem for the Redbirds. 7 innings pitched with 5 hits and 6 strikeouts. MacLane has been quite good since coming over to the Redbirds but it’s unlikely that he has the stuff to succeed at the majors.
- Josh Kinney and Pete Parise (who seem to be the relievers of choice in Memphis) pitched a pair of scoreless frames.
Springfield 1, NW Arkansas 2
- This game knocks the S-Cards out of the playoffs.
- The offense never showed up as Springfield accumulated just 4 hits and 2 walks.
- Three errors contributed to a messy game and the loss in the 9th inning as a Joe Mather error was associated with the walk off run.
- Brandon Dickson tossed 6 solid innings allowing 1 ER on 6 hits and 2 walks. He struck out 4.
- Chuckie Fick takes the tough luck loss in the 9th.

impressive sweep by the redbirds but disappointing sweep of the cardinals..the cards pitching just didn’t get it done the first 2 games but the offense fell asleep in the third
soft tossing lefties have had plenty of success in the majors..jamie moyer comes to mind so i wouldn’t say McClane couldn’t succeed in the majors ..but it was a good job by whoever signed him, probably luthnow
Yep — MacLane is a future borderline HOF.
Velocity matters.
Hearne and Lynn had great seasons, but stumbled in the playoffs. Dickson pitched well tonight and has earned a shot at Memphis next season.
Memphis is on a roll and has a good roster.
McClane was acquired for future considerations in June this year. He has pitched very well for the birds but does not throw very hard. As a result he needs to have outstanding location on his pitches which he doesn’t always have. As much as I like the guy he is 27 and time is running out. Hopefully he gets a shot next year. But chances are unless the Cards don’t resign several pitchers he won’t.
He’s been a fantastic pickup for a team who has had pitchers traded, stolen by the big league club and pitch ineffective. Him not having major league stuff in no way detracts from what he’s done for the Redbirds or his tremendous start in game 3.
Fick deserved the loss after a leadoff walk and misplayed bunt (he didn’t cover his assigned area). The S-Cards should have been out of the inning before Mather could play the ball off his shoulder. It was a tough play for Mather, but it probably should have been made. Fick did settle down somewhat, but he put himself in that situation.
The two other Springfield errors were a dropped pop foul that should have been caught (but didn’t have any effect on the inning per se) and Mather throwing the ball where it pulled Andrew Brown off the bag.
Not a good showing for the S-Cards in the playoffs unless your name is Brandon Dickson, Andrew Brown or Justin Fiske.
I always love the Moyer comparisons. There is a reason he’s the exception to the rule.
