Conley did not get much play at QC because he did not get hits in the at-bats he received. The Cards expected he could begin at this level, but he slumped. Being bumped down to Batavia got him untracked. Now he has enjoyed success, he should be more confident at QC next season.

I don’t know if I would say Conley choked at QC, he was never given a chance. He was never a regular at QC, he got spot starts and pinched hit in his short time at QC.

Rob, I count 14 guys on this roster 21 or younger, 3 22, and 2 23. Agreed that that doesn’t place Conley in the “dinosaur” class, but he’s definitely older than average for the level.

I’ll still be watching him with interest next year, though. If he can reach AA while continuing to hit, he’s more than interesting.

22 is not really old for the NYP league. Kyle Russell played short season ball at 22 and spent a full season in the Midwest League this year at 23. If he had signed with the Cards he probably would have began at QC and be in AA by now. Interesting that the Dodgers drafted Conley ahead of Russell in ’08.

Ahmady played 1B and 3B and DH’d. He only played 1 game at 2B as Devin Goodwin was the regular there. Another good bat but man without a true position. Many other, bigger slugger types in the way at 1B.

Conley began at QCities and choked. Getting a demotion got him going. Long term Conley may be a 1Bman because he is kind of a stiff, but he should be a useful system asset.

The lad from Slippery Rock has projection.

Ahmady is like John Gall, undersized 1Bman who can hit ok, but not enough for the Show.

Something to remember about the real Ryde is he has hardly ever played any ball. Ryde had a good season, given his nonexistant pedigree.

De la cruz is a prospect, but its going to be a long climb. Swinson and Jackson, like those guys. Edwards and Vasquez, hope is not yet gone.

For players, this should turn out to be a nice collection, in the years ahead.

Conley wasn’t particularly young for the level, indeed was “old” for it; he was born in May 1987, according to MiLB.com — no birthday given on the baseball-reference.com page you link above. Still, I much prefer a comparatively old player who can hit to a comparatively old player who can’t. And if he keeps hitting as he moves up …
