Hoff was 4th on the Cards depth chart at 2B behind Skip, Lugo, and T. Greene. It’s the only position he plays. He was stealing PT from Descalso at Memphis. I like Hoff but this move makes all the sense in the world. It’s also a good move for Hoff. There is some chatter out there that the Jays might move Aaron Hill back to SS and turn over 2B to Hoff. In any event, if the Jay’s regular 2B can play SS, it allows Hoff to be a utility middle infielder on their big club by playing 2B (and occasionally shifting the regular 2B to short).

tom s. … ok, that’s the impression i had, but just trying to think what the reason would be to waive someone (dodgers-thurston) instead of outrighting him if he had not been outrighted yet.

it could have saved us from watching him all year!

ICBIRDFAN is right! Please use some common sense in this whole ordeal. We tend to get WAY too caught up in minor league numbers versus common sense and it’s come to a head. -J-Hoff= More chances for pros + tools, ability. C’mon, may-un!

Jarret Hoff & Matt Scherrer are sure fire HOF’s cant miss prospects.. There will be more openings on the 40 man as well and Mather, Shane & Stav will not be let go… Also look for Maclane to be part of the 40 man..

you can’t be serious? Hoffpauir was -25, and Lugo was -16 (don’t know what Lugo’s numbers were at 2B only)… Also Lugo was coming off knee surgery so in theory Lugo could improve a tad, but I would not look for major improvement due to his age.

Skip should NEVER play outfield. Where do you want him to play in the OF? CF? hell no, RF? hell no, LF? Hell no, if the Cards don’t sign Holliday there has to be a WAY better LF option than Skip…. Skipe should NEVER play of, he has zero value in the OF because he can’t hit for ANY power.

Tyler Greene isn’t very good. So I guess I could care less if he is in Memphis playing everyday and then comping up to play SS when Brendan Ryan gets hurt Lugo should not play SS for long periods of time. I guess the one issue next year is you don’t really have a good back up SS option, I guess the Cards just have to hope Brendan Ryan stays healthy/good enough to play 150 games..

wade — you get to be outrighted once in your career. if you have been outrighted previously, you have to clear waivers to get off the 40-man. so, thurston and scherer could be outrighted because they’d never been outrighted before. i’m guessing the hoff must have been previously outrighted.

barden was put through waivers, iirc, because arizona had outrighted him once before. cot’s tracks whether somebody’s been outrighted, though i don’t know that they’re 100% on prior outrightings.

I would rather have J-Hoff playing 2B in St. Louis next year vs LHP than freakin’ Lugo. Maybe we’ll actually go out and get a starting 2B with some power this offseason and move Skip back to OF, but I doubt it.

So Lugo already cost us Hoffpauir, I guess he’ll also be Tony’s excuse for keeping T. Greene in Memphis for another season.

DG has a new Bird Land up cover the post I just said would be worthwhile right now. Barden was set free as a free agent already, Mather, Stav and Thurston have to be re-upped and there are a bunch of free agents that will free up more spots.
