Surprise 5, Peo Javelinas 4
- Daniel Descalso and Daryl Jones both laid an 0-for-4 goose egg.
Surprise 2, Scottsdale 4
- Bryan Anderson was 1-for-3 with a walk.
- Daryl Jones was 2-for-4. If you’ve been paying attention to the box scores, I’d like to highlight something that I think is really noteworthy. I’m not one for reading much into the AFL stats because there’s so much variance. I am encouraged to see DJ playing some CF. I think it’s a mischaracterization to call him a corner outfiedler. When I’ve seen him he’s had great range with an average or below average arm (setting aside some awesome throws I’ve seen from him). So if you want to take away a positive this AFL season, be encouraged that DJ is getting time in center.

interesting point. should the cards actually manage to resign holliday, a season of playing CF at memphis would really help his trade value. this also means that robinson is even less essential than he was a few months ago.
Robinson is the new Nick Stavinoha. The Cardinals will call him up just to anger me.
Jones is showing in the AFL that he could should start next season at Springfield. He needs to improve.
Jones was a CF in high school.
Robinson, Henley, and Jay/Mather can play OF for Memphis next year.
az – they haven’t yet bounced nick from the 40-man. nick stavinoha may be the new nick stavinoha.
OTOH, they didn’t bother calling up sugar shane during the september callups – that should say something about what they think of him. nick the stick at least has the cover that he was injured at that time.
Totally off topic – how is David Freese’s defense? With Beltre being a free agent it would be awesome to have Beltre and Ryan on the left side of the infield. But it seems like the FO is going to give Freese a shot. How does he rate?
themop10,
According to minorleaguespilt.com, Freese is an excellent defender at 3B. They use Sean Smith’s TotalZone; Freese’s Runs/150 was +13 in 2007 and +12 in 2008.
OT: It seems like Mark Hamilton was released from the Dominican League due to poor performance. Ugh.
re: hamilton. ugh. I hope he’s not injured again.
