Brian Walton has the list of Cardinals that are Rule 5 eligible.

Joe Strauss tweets ” Cardinals apparently vulnerable to losing two “prospects” in … Rule 5. One familiar; one not.

Jonathan Mayo and John Manuel have some names of interest.

This thread in Primate Land has lot of links to other players of interest.

My prediction is the Cardinals draft nobody, although if they could get a RH reliever with some upside, I don’t see what’s the harm in taking a shot. I know the club would like to get a LH hitting outfielder, but I don’t think it’s a big priority with Allen Craig, Joe Mather and Jon Jay all vying for 4th/5th OF jobs with the big club. And I don’t have a good idea who Strauss is referring to that the team could lose. McCormick has perceived upside, I could see a team taking  a shot on him. Mike Parisi maybe could be a fit as a swingman. No idea who the mystery man could be. Maybe Amaury Marti? …..

Just kidding.

I say if all else fails, draft Disco Hayes. If he fails as a ROOGY, he could work for Sig in the analytical department.

Marti wouldn’t have been a far fetched idea if he hadn’t stumbled this winter. The guy can hit and could play for someone off the bench (particularly an AL team).

What is Strauss’ motive to be so secretive? does he think he’s going to tip some team off as to who our best players are?

I still think Daley is the guy I target if I’m another team. If he gets his control under control (kkkk) his arm could allow him to stick at the ML level.

Donovan Solano is my pick for the mystery man, He just turned 22 so he can have the year in the bigs and go back and have a full year at Triple-A and still be young in 2012. He can play all the positions handles the bat decent and could be a very nice player if he can find some XBH power of any kind.

The Cardinals protected the right players this year. There’s no one that they should be reasonably worried about losing and having them turn into a productive player.

cubs selected mike parisi according to goold.

Befor I even looked I was going to guess that Parisi was going. Someone could stash him on the DL for an extended period of time.

Jukich is a Lefty who had a 4.22 FIP in 123 IP in 29 games 17 starts in AAA last season. 7.76K/9. Probably bullpen filler behind Miller and Reyes.

  7. Hugo says:

They also just took Lefty Matt Meyer career releiver

    • Hugo says:

Oh and I would expect both are going to be around in ST but not sure if we will keep them long term, or maybe deal one of Reyes/Miller if they pan out

Jurick is not a lefty reliever – his splits are actually worse against LH batters. He most likely will compete as a starter.

He was lights out in the last month of the season and has been even better in the Dominican League this winter. He may have been injured earlier in the year. My guess is that strong finish and Winter league is what convinced the Cards to take a chance on him.

Parisi might make the Cubs and turn out to be an OK #4/#5 or middle reliever. I don’t think we lost John Santana though. :)

  9. Hugo says:

I just don’t see us using Jurick as our 5th starter for the entire season so I figured he would be stashed in the pen.

  10. stewartmiller says:

We lost Mike Parisi… its really to bad they couldn’t have protected him… I knew as soon as I saw he was left off the 40 man that he was a gone… loved his 12 – 6 curve was really a good one… I hope the Cubs offer him back…. thinking is it pretty much came down to protecting Ottavino or Parisi and they choose Ott…. better upside and FB…

jukich has a strong gb rate – about 50% at every level in the minors. he pairs that with a steady k rate between 7 and 9 per 9 IP. that explains the club’s interest. for a rule V pick, he seems very reasonable. he is everything brad thompson should have been but wasn’t. if brad had been able to strike 7 guys out per nine, he’d still be on the club.

there’s no saying if jukich’s talent translates to the big club. i’d guess he goes to ST and gets the full Duncan. if he doesn’t succeed he’ll go back. my guess is he gets a shot as a longman and spot starter if his pitches seem to translate to the big leagues.

  12. cariocacardinal says:

A lot of people wanted the Cards to retain MacLane. Jukich seems to have better K rates, better GB%, and a lower FIP. Seems like a good candidate in the context of MacLane.
